If the condition arises from severe pain or from excessive use of purgative/draining drugs that damage Stomach Qi, employ Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), and Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). If it results from anger causing Liver injury, employ Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) and Fuling (Poria). If it is due to abundant Phlegm-Fire, employ Erchen Tang (Two Aged Substances Decoction) with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) stir-fried with ginger and Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae). If it stems from deficiency of Stomach Qi, employ Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae). If it follows excessive bleeding or occurs after ulceration, employ Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis).
One patient suffered from severe pain and fever, vomiting with poor appetite, and fullness/stuffiness in the chest and diaphragm. After administering formulas for moving Qi and breaking blood stasis, symptoms worsened; dry mouth with thirst, irregular bowel movements, and a dark discoloration at the lesion site appeared. Xue Ji stated: This is caused by pain damaging Stomach Qi. He subsequently prescribed Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chao Qin (Stir-fried Radix Scutellariae), Ruan Chaihu (Soft Bupleuri Radix), and Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba). After two doses, various symptoms gradually improved; subsequently, a strongly tonifying formula was used to promote suppuration, leading to recovery.
Another patient presented with fever and pain. After taking cold-natured drugs, dry mouth with thirst intensified, accompanied by abdominal pain. The patient suspected blood stasis and desired purgation. Upon palpation of the abdomen, there was no tenderness; the pulse was faint, fine, and slow, with reduced intake of food and aversion to cold. This indicated that cold drugs had damaged Stomach Qi. Urgently, Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) was administered with Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), and Paofuzi (Prepared Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), each one qian. Before this dose took effect, previous symptoms worsened, accompanied by delirious speech and flushed face. Xue Ji surmised that the medicinal force had not yet reached the disease site. An additional five fen of Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) was added to the prescription. After ingestion, the patient fell asleep; upon waking, all ailments suddenly receded, and peace was restored.
A person accustomed to rich and greasy foods suffered a leg contusion with cyanosis, swelling, and pain. After taking acrid-warm drugs, fever and wheezing developed, the lesion became more painful, and dry mouth with peeling lips occurred. Xue Ji said: Individuals consuming rich diets often have accumulated internal heat. Administering acrid-warm agents further exacerbates Stomach Fire, causing these symptoms. Frequent drinking of Tongbian (Urine of an uncircumcised boy) was recommended to clear the Stomach, along with Qingwei San (Clear the Stomach Powder) plus Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis). Treatment brought immediate cessation of symptoms. The lesion was treated with warming moxibustion using Congbai (White Part of Allium Fistulosum), resulting in rapid resolution of swelling.
A woman injured her finger, resulting in swelling of the entire dorsum of the hand, slight vomiting, and poor appetite. She believed it was due to toxic qi attacking internally. Palpation revealed a deep and fine pulse. Xue Ji diagnosed this as pain damaging Stomach Qi. Pus amounting to approximately one bowl was drained. Initially, Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), and Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) were given, after which appetite returned. Subsequently, Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) was combined with Huangqi (Radix Astragali Membranacei), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), and Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis Grandiflori). Over a month, the sore healed.
