A question was asked: "Why is there swelling, pain, and redness like rosy clouds in the area from the hypochondrium to the waist and hip?" The answer was: "This is called Internal-emanating Erysipelas (Nei Fa Dan Du). If treatment is slightly delayed, the toxin attacks internally, leading to vomiting, hiccups, coma, and chest/abdominal distension; this is fatal. If urination and defecation are blocked, and the whole body turns blue-purple; this is fatal. Urgently use Bian stone (Bian Shi) to pierce and release evil blood. Administer Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Windproof Unblocking Supreme Powder) [remove Atractylodis Rhizoma and Glycyrrhizae Radix], combined with Zijin Dan (Purple Gold Pill) and Shengjin Dan (Victory-Gold Pill) to induce sweating. If sweating occurs after taking the diaphoretic agent, life can be saved; if no sweat, death ensues. Vomiting with inability to eat, and delirium; this is fatal."
A question was asked: "What about a carbuncle appearing about one cun above the umbilicus?" The answer was: "This is called Chong Ju (Chong Carbuncle), also known as Zhong Fa Ju (Middle-Emanating Carbuncle), or Yong Shen Chuang (Yong Kidney Sore). It is caused by excessive Heart Fire flowing into the Kidney Meridian. If the swelling is high, pus is thick, and the color is red, it is treatable. Selectively use Liqi Yin (Flowing-Qi Decoction), Muling Yin (Life-Saving Decoction), Shengjin Dan, and Duoming Dan (Life-Seizing Pill). If the swelling is flat and black, abdomen is distended with nausea, pus/water is clear and thin, internal Kidney pain occurs, extreme thirst with uncontrolled diarrhea, delirium, and fixed gaze; this is fatal. Long-term non-healing after ulceration; this is fatal. Note: The critical conditions mentioned later are merely due to deficiency. If substantial tonification is applied, death will not occur."
A question was asked: "What about an abscess arising at the umbilicus?" The answer was: "This is Umbilical Abscess (Qi Yong), caused by accumulated heat in the Heart Meridian flowing into the Large Intestine and Small Intestine meridians. Selectively use Heshouwu San (Polygoni Multiflori Powder), Muling Yin added with Cimicifugae Rhizoma, Zijin Dan, and Sansheng San (Three-Lives Powder). For robust individuals, Yili Jindan (One-Pill Golden Pill) should be administered to purge. Note: The umbilicus is the Shenque acupoint, a forbidden site for acupuncture. Disperse it early to avoid suppuration, which is the superior approach."
The *Gui Yi* text states: "For Chong Ju, abdominal pain occurs with chills and fever upon onset. After four to five days, when the color changes, it may be pierced. If not pierced and Dao Yin (guiding and pulling exercises) is not performed, pus and toxin cannot be discharged, making it untreatable; death occurs after fifty-plus days." A question was asked: "What about a carbuncle below the umbilicus?" The answer was: "This is Lower-abdomen Abscess (Xiao Fu Yong). One point-five cun below the umbilicus is Qihai (Sea of Qi); two cun is Dantian (Elixir Field); three cun is Guanyuan (Passport of Origin). All belong to the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel), caused by disharmony of the Seven Emotions. Urgently administer Muling Yin, Zijin Dan, and Duoming Dan. For robust individuals, Yili Jindan and Bazhen San (Eight-Array Powder) should be used to purge; for the elderly and weak, Huangmuxiang San (Yellow Musk Powder), Neibu Shixuan San (Internal-Nourishing Ten-Aperture Powder), and Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten-Thousand Tonifying Decoction) should be selected. If ulcerated with sinking appearance, clear/thin pus, or long-term non-healing; this is fatal." A question was asked: "A person aged nineteen has a carbuncle on the left side of the lower abdomen. After several months, a hard mass like stone forms, with alternating chills and fever, reduced appetite, and gradual emaciation. What is this?" The answer was: "This is called Huan Ju (Slow Carbuncle), caused by accumulated heat in the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Due to improper medical treatment, pathogenic factors and healthy qi are in stalemate. Administer Zijin Dan and Muling Yin, with intermittent use of Shiquan Dabu Tang. Recovery occurs within half a month."
