Various prescriptions from *Shengji Zonglu* for treating lacquer dermatitis:
Use three jin of fresh willow leaves; in winter, use the bark instead. Decoct in water to make a decoction, adjust to a suitable temperature, and wash the affected area.
Use five liang of Mangxiao (Mirabilite), dissolve it in water, soak and wash the affected area.
Boil Zhigao (Pork Fat) alone, filter out the dregs, let it cool, and apply it topically.
Take one fresh crab, extract the roe, and apply it as a poultice to the affected area, three to five times daily.
Use one jin of dried lotus leaves, boil in water to wash the affected area, then sprinkle with powder of Guanzhong (Cyathulae Radix). If it dries, mix with oil and apply.
Apply Ji Zi Huang (Egg Yolk) to the sores; replace when dry, no more than three times.
Decoct Huanglu Mu (Dalbergia odorifera wood) in water and frequently wash the affected area.
Another prescription: Decoct Gujingcao (Gossypii Semen or similar herb depending on context, here likely referring to a specific local herb for this condition) in water to wash; the effect is very rapid.
Another prescription: Decoct Bai Fan (Alumen) in water to soak and wash.
Another prescription: Decoct Shanben (Cedri Lignum or similar) in water to wash; effective.
Another prescription: Decoct Mangcao Ye (Radix Datiscae or similar herb, literally "Mangcao leaf") in water to wash.
Another prescription: Mix Wumingyi (Haematitum) powder with water to form a paste for topical application.
Another prescription: Apply Yangru (Sheep's Milk) to cure it; it also treats spider bites, and internal administration is particularly excellent.
For treating lacquer dermatitis, frostbite, and wounds caused by dog bites, chew Shumi (Sorghum grain) until mashed and apply as a poultice.
For chronic lacquer dermatitis that does not heal, crush Qicao (Lacquer tree sap/leaves) into a paste and apply to the affected area; immediate effect is observed.
Spasms arising from sores and ulcers are caused by deficiency and loss of Qi and Blood, external pathogens combing with the interior, or internal deficiency leading to stagnant fire. The manifestations include tightness of the jaw, stiffness and rigidity of the four limbs, or opisthotonos (arching of the back), and convulsions of the body. Those who have sweating but no aversion to cold are diagnosed with Rou Jing (Flaccid Tetanus). Wind disperses Qi, hence the sweating. Those who have no sweating and have aversion to cold are diagnosed with Gang Jing (Rigid Tetanus). Cold congeals Blood, hence the absence of sweating. All these conditions result from excessive blood loss, leaving the sinews without nourishment. Therefore, they often occur in patients with Shanghan (Cold Damage) who have undergone excessive sweating or purgation, as well as in ulcer patients and postpartum women; these are critical, deteriorating conditions. If treated with strong tonification of Qi and Blood, recovery is often possible; if treated merely as wind disorders, it will hasten danger.
Zhang Tongye, an official of the Ministry of Justice, previously suffered from Liuzhu (flowing abscesses). After suddenly catching cold while sleeping on a heated kang, he developed facial twitching and deviation, and trembling of the hands and feet. I considered this due to Qi and Blood deficiency with internal heat. I prescribed Renshen (Ginseng), [missing character, likely Huangqi], Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Wallichii), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), and Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root). He recovered.
Wu Zhanzhi, a Censor, fell from a horse and injured his head, suffering excessive bleeding. He presented with fever, irritability, muscle twitching, and sinew tremors. Some suspected Poshangfeng (Traumatic Tetanus) and wished to induce sweating to expel wind. I said: This is fire agitation due to blood loss; there is no wind to expel and no sweat to induce. One must strongly tonify the blood. I prescribed Shengyu Tang (Saintly Life Decoction) for two doses, resulting in immediate recovery. Subsequently, I used formulas to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach and nourish Qi and Blood, leading to complete recovery.
A scholar, whose back sore was nearly healed, developed fever and irritability. Having self-administered cooling/fire-draining medicines, he developed neck stiffness, trismus, spontaneous sweating, and aversion to cold. This was due to excessive sweating causing loss of fluids and blood internally, leaving the sinews without nourishment. I treated him with Qi and Blood tonifying formulas and Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill), and he recovered.
A man, accustomed to hard labor, developed widespread papules after walking early in the morning, accompanied by trismus, staring eyes, and a wiry-tight pulse. This was due to labor injuring Qi and Blood, with internal heat combing with external pathogens. I prescribed Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) plus Shanzhi, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), and Chuanxiong. He recovered. Half a year later, he experienced generalized itching, which scratched open into sores, accompanied by fever and thirst, and a surging yet empty pulse. I repeated the previous formula adding Shaoyao (Peony Root), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root), and Tianma. He recovered.
A scholar prone to anger suffered from Luoli (scrofula). Due to extreme anger and jumping, he suddenly collapsed, experiencing arm convulsions, deviation of the lips and mouth, and tightening of the left eye. This was Liver Fire with Blood deficiency, generating internal wind. I prescribed Bazhen San (Eight Treasures Powder) plus Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), and Shanzhi. He recovered. Early the following spring, the disease recurred with urinary incontinence, and the left Guan pulse was wiry, surging, and rapid. I diagnosed Liver Fire and Blood dryness. I prescribed Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) plus Gouteng, Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Maimendong, Chuanxiong, and Danggui. He gradually improved; subsequently, Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Shanzhi, Gouteng, and Mudanpi stabilized his condition.
A woman, due to anger, fell to the ground, causing bleeding from a sore. She had slurred speech, facial deviation, limb spasms, sweating, and urinary incontinence. Others used wind-expelling formulas. Her six pulses were surging, especially the Liver pulse. This indicated blazing Liver Fire. I prescribed Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) plus Gouteng, along with Liuwei Wan. She recovered soon.
A woman with internal hemorrhoids suffered heavy bleeding due to labor, leading to frequent spasms, poor appetite, fatigue, and pale complexion. I diagnosed Qi injury failing to control Blood. I prescribed Buzhong Yiqi Tang. However, she developed alternating chills and fever with bleeding, indicating Yang Qi deficiency and cold. I continued with the previous formula plus Paojiang (Prepared Ginger) for four doses. The chills and fever subsided, appetite improved, and after another four doses, bleeding stopped completely. Later, due to labor or anger, she had bloody stools or spasms. Treatment with Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Gouteng cured her.
A woman with an irritable temperament suffered generalized pruritus and occasional cervical lymph node swelling. She frequently took herbs to search for wind and move Qi. After severe anger, she vomited blood, had tight lips and mouth, frequent urination, and occasional incontinence. This was anger stirring Liver Fire causing reckless movement. I prescribed Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) plus Shanzhi and Mudanpi. She recovered.
A woman, due to labor combined with anger, had limb flexion spasms, headache, sweating, scanty urine, and aversion to wind and cold. Her pulse was floating, wiry, and slow. This was Qi and Blood deficiency with combing of wind, cold, dampness, and heat. I first used Dongyuan Qingzao Tang (Dongyuan's Dryness-Resolving Decoction) for gradual improvement; then Jiawei Xiaoyao San and Bazhen Tang plus Mudanpi led to recovery.
A woman with existing Liver Fire sometimes had pain and swelling between the ribs, or chills and fever. Suddenly, she became confused, experienced clonic-tonic convulsions, frequent stretching and yawning, limb sinew spasms, and rising phlegm-saliva. This was extreme Lung Metal dryness with decline in Blood and Yin. I prescribed Qingzao Wan (Dryness-Resolving Pill) and Liuwei Wan taken together. She recovered soon.
A woman, due to severe labor, developed sores. Papules scratched open into sores, with severe fever at dusk, occasional trismus and convulsions, or dizziness. This was Liver and Spleen Qi and Blood deficiency with internal heat. I treated with Bazhen San plus Chaihu and Shanzhi. Symptoms slightly improved. Anger caused recurrence with continuous menstruation, indicating Liver and Spleen Blood heat. Jiawei Xiaoyao San gradually improved it. Bazhen San plus Chaihu and Shanzhi completed the cure.
A woman developed papules with severe fever at dusk, early menstruation, dizziness, chills/fever, or limb convulsions. This was Wind-Blood heat and dryness in the Liver channel. Jiawei Xiaoyao San cured her soon. Anger caused recurrence with trismus and incontinence, indicating Liver Fire and Blood dryness. Xiao Chaihu Tang plus Shengdi (Raw Rehmannia Root) gradually improved it. Nighttime fever and delirium indicated Heat in the Blood level. Xiao Chaihu Tang plus Shengdi cured it. Jiawei Xiaoyao San regulated her condition thereafter.
A woman with Jianchun (Callus-like lip lesion) had early menstruation. I diagnosed Liver Fire and Blood heat. Disbelieving this, she indiscriminately used fire-draining medicines, causing delayed menstruation. Labor and anger then caused trismus, groaning, immobility of limbs, surging six pulses, and red face. Eight Treasures Plus Five Flavors, Gardenia, Moutan, and Ophiopogon for several doses gradually improved her. Combined with Xiaoyao San and Liuwei Wan ingredients (over 30 doses each), she fully recovered.
A woman's menstruation stopped upon anger. Severe cases involved trismus, sinew spasms, epistaxis, headache, phlegm rush, convulsions, and upward gaze of pupils. This was extreme Liver Fire. Xiao Chaihu Tang plus Shudi, Shanzhi, and Gouteng Hook cured her.
A woman with inherent Yin deficiency suffered generalized pruritus. Mistakenly taking wind-dispelling drugs, she developed trismus and convulsions. Her Liver pulse was surging and rapid. I said: Liver Blood is Yin/Water; Liver Qi is Yang/Fire. This is Liver Channel Blood deficiency with Fire excess. I should assist Yin/Blood and suppress Liver Fire. Thus, Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), Maimendong, Wuweizi, Chaihu, Shanzhi, and Shengcaogen (Raw Licorice Root) stopped the heat and convulsions immediately. Bazhen Tang plus Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Maimendong, Wuweizi, Gouteng, and Zhigancao regulated her to recovery.
A woman with chronic Liuzhu had weak Spleen and Stomach. Suddenly, she had phlegm obstruction, panting, head shaking, blinking, waving hands, and kicking legs, making pulse diagnosis difficult. Her face was yellow with green undertones, indicating Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth. Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Chaihu and Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) revived her. Buzhong Yiqi Tang plus Banxia and Fuling (Poria) stabilized her.
