Fuling Hupo Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Amber Decoction, from *Baojian*): Treats internal accumulation of damp-heat due to excessive consumption of rich and sweet foods, leading to impaired transformation and transportation. Symptoms include涩滞 (obstruction) of the bladder orifices, frequent but scanty urination, distension and fullness in the umbilical and abdominal regions, heaviness in the waist and legs, inability to lie down comfortably, a deep and slow pulse that is occasionally rapid.
Ingredients: Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Hupo (Amber) (each 0.5 liang); Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig) (each 3 qian); Zexie (Alisma Rhizome) (1 liang); Huashi (Talcum) (7 qian); Muzhuling (Polyporus) (0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take 5 qian each time, mixed with one cup of "Ganlan Shui" (water from a flowing stream). Take on an empty stomach or before meals. After a short while, eat some delicious food to settle the stomach.
The *Neijing* states: "Sweet flavors relieve tension, and bland flavors promote diuresis." When heat binds with body fluids causing internal accumulation, leading to abdominal distension, it is necessary to relieve tension and drain heat. Therefore, bland and sweet herbs are primarily used; thus, Fuling is selected as the Sovereign herb. Huashi is sweet and cold, slippery to unblock orifices; Zhuling and Hupo are bland, promoting diuresis and clearing water pathways, so these three are used as Ministers. The Spleen dislikes dampness; when dampness accumulates internally, Spleen Qi fails to govern properly. To tonify the Spleen and overcome dampness, sweet herbs are needed as assistants; thus, Gancao and Baizhu are used as Assistants. Salty flavors enter the Kidney; salty flavors descend and belong to Yin. Zexie is salty and drains latent water; the Kidney dislikes dryness, and urgent nourishment requires pungent flavors to moisten it. When body fluids do not circulate, they must be dispersed with pungent flavors. Guizhi (here referred to as Guixin) is pungent, dispersing dampness and moistening dryness, addressing the pathogenesis directly; thus, these two are used as Envoys. Using flowing water for decoction prevents aiding Kidney Qi excessively, and making it a strong decoction allows it to reach the lower jiao rapidly.
Weizhen Tang (from *Baoshi Fang*): Treats men and women with depleted Yuan Qi, weak Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive) Qi, insecure True Yang, and disharmony of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). Symptoms include upper excess and lower deficiency, nocturnal emissions with dreams of sexual intercourse, night sweats upon waking, lackluster complexion, dry lips, mouth, and tongue, tinnitus like cicadas, lower back pain and fatigue, deficient Heart Qi, restlessness, palpitations, forgetfulness, loss of appetite, gradual emaciation, itching and dampness in the external genitalia, frequent nocturnal urination, swelling and heavy cold pain in the testicles radiating to the lower abdomen, weakness in the feet and knees, and difficulty walking. For women with long-standing coldness in the Blood Sea (Chong and Ren meridians), irregular menstruation, delayed periods, twice-monthly bleeding, leukorrhea (red and white discharge), five-colored leakage, uterine coldness, and infertility, this formula is also effective. This medicine greatly generates Qi and Blood. Taken at midnight (Zi hour) when Kidney Water is at its peak, it tonifies the Kidney and solidifies the viscera. In men, it helps conserve blood and transform essence. It can prevent diseases before they arise, ensuring they do not become obstacles.
