During the Tang Dynasty, Li Ji once fell ill. The physician diagnosed him and stated, "Ingesting the ash of beard hair is required for the illness to cease." Emperor Taizong then personally cut off his own beard, burned it into ash, and bestowed it upon Li Ji for ingestion. He also ordered it to be applied to the carbuncle sores, resulting in an immediate cure. Thus, Bai Juyi wrote, "Cutting the beard and burning it into medicine to bestow upon meritorious officials." Emperor Renzong also bestowed this upon Lü Yijian. There is an ancient saying that beards can treat diseases; now I cut my beard to mix with medicine for him, expressing my intent.
Supplementary ten types from Chen Cangqi:
Primarily treats emaciated patients with dry and withered skin and flesh, where bran-like scales appear on the body. It is also used for those bitten by rabid dogs who are developing chills and fever; fresh blood is drawn via pricking and ingested with this preparation.
Treats Zhaili (consumptive disease due to transmission).
Primarily treats qi and blood deficiency leading to emaciation, labor damage in women, darkened facial skin, and gradual wasting due to various internal abdominal ailments. Mix it with five-flavor berry (Wuweizi) according to the method for making "Jiabing" (a type of cake), and administer it with food without letting the patient know. When a woman's placenta turns into water, it has a pungent taste and is non-toxic. It primarily treats infant erysipelas, various heat toxins, persistent chills and fever, delirious speech, standing hair on the head, and deficiency-type bloating. This substance forms when a placenta is buried underground after childbirth and transforms into water over seven or eight years, clear as pure water. People in the south bury it deeply along with licorice root (Gancao), cimicifuga (Shengma), and other herbs; after three to five years, they dig it up and use it as medicine. It treats epidemic heat diseases with immediate effect.
Meishi Formula: Treats grass gu (parasitic infection), characterized by stabbing pain in the throat that feels fatal. Take one placenta, slice it, dry it thoroughly, and grind it into powder. Mix one qianbi (a small measuring spoon) with warm water. It is most effective for treating snake gu, dung beetle gu, and grass poison.
Primarily treats Yin Yi disease (post-illness sexual transmission disease). Cut it from the male genitalia, burn it into powder, and ingest one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure). Placenta from a virgin girl is even better. If a woman suffers from Yin Yi, a man's placenta must be used. Yin Yi disease occurs when, after recovering from an epidemic illness, sexual intercourse leads to mutual transmission, which is more severe than the original illness. Symptoms include red and difficult urination and severe chills and fever. Ingesting this promotes smooth urination. If not, moxa should be applied to the yin region for fourteen burns (two sets of seven). Additionally, a woman's placenta primarily treats retained placenta; placing it over a well mouth causes it to fall immediately. Using the specific woman's own placenta is best.
Primarily treats Gui Qi (ghostly qi), Shizhu (corpse transmission), and Fulian (lingering latent disease).
Primarily treats snake bites. Hold twenty strands in the mouth and swallow the juice; the snake venom will not enter the abdomen.
