Nvqing: Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, toxic. It primarily treats gu poison (poison caused by magical or biological means), expels evil qi, kills ghosts, treats warm malaria (a type of malaria characterized by high fever), and wards off misfortune. Also known as Quepiao (Sparrow Gourd). It is the root of Shejian (Ophiopogon japonicus var. radicans? *Note: Context implies a specific herb identified as Shejian root*). It grows in Zhuya. Harvested in August, dried in the shade.
Tao Hongjing stated: If it were indeed the root of Shejian, it should not grow exclusively in Zhuya. The common usage employs the leaves of this grass, which is a different substance; it remains unclear which is authentic. The "Shu" text states: Carrying one liang of this powdered drug prevents epidemic diseases; therefore, it is crucial to identify the true substance. The "Tang Ben Zhu" notes: This plant is indeed Quepiao. Its leaves resemble those of Metaplexis japonica (Luomo), with two leaves opposite each other. The fruit resembles a ladle, about the size of a jujube, hence the name Quepiao. The root resembles Baiwei (Cynanchum atratum). It grows in marshes and plains. Both stems and leaves have an unpleasant odor. The root of Shejian is entirely unrelated. Furthermore, the "Bie Lu" states: When young, the leaves resemble Metaplexis japonica, with round tips and thick stems; the fruits are black, and the juice from stems and leaves is yellowish-white. This is similar to previous descriptions. If it were the root of Shejian, how could its seedlings grow in Yizhou while its roots are found in Zhuya, separated by over ten thousand li? The "Bie Lu" also states: The white juice of Quepiao treats insect and snake bites; this is the juice of Nvqing seedlings.
Minister Yu Xi et al., according to the "Yao Xing Lun", state: Nvqing, used as an assistant drug, has a bitter flavor and is non-toxic. It can treat the chills and fever of warm malaria, using Shejian as an assistant drug.
The "Tu Jing" details are recorded under the entry for Shejian.
The "Zhou Hou Fang": To ward off plague diseases. On the Yin day of the first month, grind Nvqing into powder, store it in a triangular stitched pouch, and hang it in the front tent for great auspiciousness. The "Zimu Milu": Treats bluish-black-red discoloration of the lower abdominal skin and inability to breathe. Use this prescription immediately; it also treats sudden death due to vomiting and dysentery. Administer Nvqing powder into the mouth, taken with wine. It is also effective for adults. The "Nei Zhuan of Purple Spirit Southern Lord and Lady of Mount Nan" treats sudden death. Grind one qian of Nvqing crumbs, place them in the throat, and swallow with water or wine to revive immediately.
Boil in water and drink the juice. It resolves toxicity induced by Zishiying (Hematite) and primarily treats persistent vomiting and diarrhea due to Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome), as well as detoxifying poisoning from eating beef or horse meat, bloating, vomiting, and dysentery [not stopping].
Now, according to Chen Cangqi's "Ben Cao": Old hemp shoe soles treat Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome). Boil in water and drink the juice. Shoe laces as large as jujubes, blood-stained underwear of women, and fourteen hooked thorns from hand-sized plants, all burned to ash, mixed with pig fat and applied to fox-thorn sores to expel worms. (Previously attached in "Tang Ben") Minister Yu Xi et al., according to Chen Cangqi: Burn broken straw shoes mixed with miscellaneous materials to ash, mix with vinegar, and apply to pediatric heat-toxin wandering swelling.
Chen Cangqi states: Take fourteen tips of hemp shoes, burn to ash, and take with well-water drawn at dawn to treat enuresis. Also, burn old hemp shoe soles until red-hot, add to wine and grain decoction, and drink to treat Huoluan with muscle cramps. The "Wai Tai Mi Yao": For recent cases of bedwetting. Take the shoe laces and nose-root parts, excluding the sole, requiring seven portions. For rectal prolapse: Roast hemp shoe soles and press frequently onto the affected area for permanent cure. Also, take one old hemp shoe sole and one turtle head, burn the turtle head, grind to powder, apply to the anus, and press the shoe sole inside to prevent prolapse. The "Jing Yan Fang": Treats nasal congestion. Blow ash from burnt hemp shoes into the nose for immediate relief. Also known as Qianli Ma (Thousand-Mile Horse), a name for hemp shoes. The "Guang Li Fang" treats epistaxis (nosebleed): Blow shoe [sole] ash into the nostrils for immediate effect.
