Taste is sweet, nature is warm, non-toxic. It primarily treats alternating chills and fever (Hanre) and body edema (Shenzhong). Long-term consumption lightens the body, prolongs life, and increases longevity. Harvest in December, dry in shade.
Tao Hongjing states: It grows everywhere now, resembling a vine, not withering in winter, hence named Ren Dong (Honeysuckle). People only use it to brew wine, for tonifying deficiency and treating wind pathologies. It is rarely used in *Xian Jing* (Immortal Classic). Since it prolongs life and increases longevity, it is highly advisable to harvest and consume it regularly. Is it the sentiment of mediocre people to value distant things while despising nearby ones, refusing easy-to-obtain herbs while seeking rare ones? The *Tang Bencao* commentary notes: This herb grows as a vine, winding over other plants. The seedlings and stems are reddish-purple; older stems have a thin white membranous layer (pronounced 'Mo'). Tender stems have hairs; leaves resemble broad beans, also hairy on both sides. Flowers are white with purple stamens. Some people currently substitute Luan Shi (Trachelospermum jasminoides), which is incorrect. Current analysis of Chen Cangqi's *Bencao* states: Ren Dong treats heat-toxic dysentery with blood and watery dysentery; decoct strongly and take orally. The entry for Xiao Han (Minor Cold) states its nature is warm, which is incorrect. Ministers Yu Xi et al. respectfully cite *Yao Xing Lun*: Ren Dong can also be used alone. Taste is pungent, primarily treating abdominal distension and fullness, able to stop descending qi.
*Zhou Hou Fang* (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies): Fei Shi (Flying Corpse) wanders through the skin, penetrates zang-fu organs, causes stabbing pain upon onset, and changes unpredictably; Dun Shi (Lurking Corpse) attaches to bones and enters flesh, attacking blood vessels; onset cannot be approached, triggered by seeing funerals or hearing crying; Feng Shi (Wind Corpse) leaps wildly in limbs, location of pain unknown; onset involves dizziness and confusion, triggered by wind and cold; Chen Shi (Sinking Corpse) entangles bones and knots in zang-fu, strikes heart and hypochondrium; onset involves twisting pain, triggered by cold; Shi Zhu (Corpse Transmission) causes heaviness of the whole body, mental confusion, frequent feeling of collapse; severe malaise occurs at every solar term. This category has a separate post-treatment moxibustion method. Ren Dong stems and leaves, chopped into several hu (ancient unit), boiled until thick, juice extracted and concentrated, taken like one egg-sized portion, two to three times daily.
She Chuang Zi (Cnidium Fruit)
Taste is bitter, pungent, sweet, nature is neutral, non-toxic. Primarily treats swelling and pain in the female vagina, male impotence, damp itching, dispels bi-syndrome qi, benefits joints, epilepsy, foul sores, warms the middle and directs qi downward, warms the female uterus, and strengthens the male penis. Long-term consumption lightens the body, improves complexion, and aids fertility. Also known as She Su, She Mi, Hui Chuang, Si Yi, Sheng Du, Zao Ji, Qiang Mi. Grows in valleys and fields of Linzi. Harvest fruits in May, dry in shade. (Avoid using with Mudan, Badou, Beimu.)
Tao Hongjing states: Abundant in fields and villages near roads. Flowers and leaves resemble Mi Wu. *Tang Bencao* commentary states: *Erya* names it Xu (pronounced 'Xu'). Ministers Yu Xi et al. respectfully cite *Shu Ben Tu Jing*: Resembles small-leaf Xiongqiong, white flowers, seeds like millet grains, yellowish-white. Grows in damp lowlands; available everywhere, those from Yangzhou and Xiangzhou are superior. Harvest seeds and sun-dry. *Erya* states: Xu is Hui Chuang. Commentary: Snake bed, also named Ma Chuang. *Yao Xing Lun* states: She Chuang Ren (seed kernel) is the sovereign herb, slightly toxic. Treats deficiency in men and women, damp-bi, toxic wind pain, removes male lower back pain, washes external genitalia of men and women, dispels wind-cold, greatly benefits yang function. Treats severe wind-induced body itching, cure by decoction bath. Treats toothache and pediatric convulsive epilepsy. Ri Hua Zi states: Treats sudden cold, warms male yang qi, assists female yin qi, resolves traumatic blood stasis, waist and hip pain, genital sweating, damp tinea, limb numbness and bi-syndrome, red and white leukorrhea, reduces urination. For internal medicinal preparation, peel shell, take kernel, lightly stir-fry to detoxify, then it is not pungent. For external washing decoctions, use raw.
*Tujing* states: She Chuang Zi grows in valleys and fields of Linzi. Available everywhere, but those from Yangzhou and Xiangzhou are best. Sprouts in March, 3-4 chi high, leaves green, finely divided in clusters resembling Artemisia branches. Each branch has over a hundred flower heads, clustered together like Apium graveolens var. secalinum. White flowers bloom in April-May, resembling Scutellaria barbata. Seeds are yellowish-brown like millet, very light and hollow. Harvest fruits in May, dry in shade. *Erya* calls it Xu, also Hui Chuang.
Lei Gong states: When using, must soak in concentrated indigo juice and natural juice of Stemonae Radix root during the Three Dog Days, drain and sun-dry. Then mix with fresh Rehmanniae Radix juice, steam from Wu hour to Hai hour, sun-dry. This process enhances yang qi significantly, termed "Ghost Examination." *Qianjin Fang*: Treats postpartum uterine prolapse. Place She Chuang Zi in a silk bag, steam and apply hot compress; also treats vaginal pain. Another prescription: Treats pediatric tinea corporis. Grind She Chuang Zi powder, mix with lard, and apply. *Jinkui Yaolue* warming vaginal suppository formula, She Chuang Zi San: Powdered She Chuang Zi Ren, mixed with a little Bai Fen (rice starch) evenly, formed into dates-sized balls, wrapped in silk, inserted vaginally, naturally produces warmth.
