陶隐居云∶今处处有，长尺二者良。俗人见其皆有虫孔而未尝见虫形，皆言不可近，令
人恶
病，殊不尔。其虫状如草菜上青虫，荚微欲黑便出，所以难见尔。但取青荚生者看，自知之
。唐本注云∶此物有三种∶猪牙皂荚最下，其形曲戾薄恶，全无滋润，洗垢不去；其尺二寸
者，粗大长虚而无润；若长
六、七寸，圆浓节促直者，皮薄多肉，味浓大好。臣禹锡等谨按
药性论云∶皂荚，使。主破坚症，腹中痛，能堕胎。又曰∶将皂荚于酒中，取尽其精，于火
内
煎之成膏，涂帛，贴一切肿毒，兼能止疼痛。陈藏器云∶鬼皂荚作浴汤，去风疮疥癣，挪叶
去衣垢，沐头长发。生江南泽畔，如皂荚，高一、二尺。日华子云∶皂荚，通关节，除头风
，消痰，杀劳虫，治骨蒸，开胃及中风口噤。入药去皮、子，以酥炙用。
图经曰∶皂荚，出雍州川谷及鲁邹县，今所在有之，以怀、孟州者为胜。木极有高硕者。
此
有三种∶《本经》云∶形如猪牙者良。陶注云长尺二者良。唐注云长六寸，圆浓节促直者，
皮
薄多肉味浓，大好。今医家作疏风气丸、煎多用长皂荚，治齿及取积药多用猪牙皂荚，所用
虽殊，大抵性味不相远。九月、十月采荚，阴干用。张仲景治杂病方，咳逆上气，唾浊但
坐不得卧，皂角丸主之。皂荚杵末，一物以蜜丸大如梧子，以枣膏和汤服一丸，日三、夜一
服。崔元亮《海上方》疗腹胀满欲瘦病者。猪牙皂角相续量长一尺，微火煨，去皮、子，
捣筛，蜜丸大如梧子。欲服药先吃煮羊肉两脔，呷汁三两口，后以肉汁下药十丸，以快利为
度。觉得力，更服，以利清
水即停。瘥后一月以来，不得食肉及诸油腻。又治热劳。以皂荚长一尺续成者亦可，须无孔
成实者，以土酥一大两微微
涂，于火上缓炙之，不得令酥下，待酥尽即捣筛，蜜丸如梧子大。每日空腹饮下十五丸，渐
增至二十丸。重者不过两剂
瘥。其初生嫩叶芽，以为蔬茹更益人。核中白肉亦入治肺药。又，炮复选中黄心嚼饵之，治
膈痰，吞酸。又，米醋熬嫩
刺针作浓煎，以敷疮癣，有奇效。
雷公云∶凡使，须要赤腻肥并不 者，然用新汲水浸一宿了，用铜刀削上粗皮，用酥反
复炙，酥尽为度。然出捶之，
去子捣筛。皂荚一两，酥二分，子收得。拣取圆满坚硬不蛀者，用瓶盛下水于火畔煮，待泡
熟，剥去硬皮一重了，取向
里白嫩肉两片，去黄，其黄消人肾气。将白两片用铜刀细切，于日中干用。圣惠方∶治时气
三日，头痛烦热。用皂角烧
作灰为末，非时新汲水一中盏，生姜汁、蜜各少许，和二钱服之。先用暖水淋浴后服药，须
臾汗出愈。外台秘要治卒中
风口 。以皂角五两，去皮为末，以三年大醋和。右 涂左，左 涂右，干更敷之，瘥。又
方∶龋齿方∶捣皂角去皮，
炙为末，涂齿上，吐之。又方∶溺死一宿者尚活，
捣皂角纸裹，纳下部，须臾出水即活。千金方∶ 鼻。炙皂角末如小豆，以竹管吹鼻中。又
方∶鬼魇不悟。皂荚末刀圭
起死人。又方∶难产。吞皂角子二枚，立瘥。肘后方∶卒肿满身面洪。用皂角剥炙令黄，锉
三升，酒一斗渍，合器煮令
沸，服一升，日三服，频作。又方∶小儿身上恶疮。先以皂角水洗，拭干。以少油麻捣烂，
敷，焦即瘥。
经验方∶治食气遍身黄肿，气喘，食不得，心胸满闷。不蛀皂角（去皮及子，涂好醋炙
令焦为末）一钱匕，巴豆七枚（去
油、膜），二件以淡醋及研好墨，为丸如麻子大，每服三丸，食后
一日增一丸，以利为度。如常
服，消酒食。梅师方∶治霍乱转筋。皂荚末，吹一小豆鼻中，得嚏便瘥。又方∶治卒外肾偏
疼。皂荚和皮为末，水调敷
之良。孙真
烧皂荚细研，粥饮下三钱，
立通。又方∶伤寒无问阴阳神验方∶以皂角一挺（肥者），烧令赤为末，以水五合

令细，续入沙糖匀和如膏，
含之。十全方∶治牙疼。用
不救方∶以皂荚去皮、子，
下，须臾便破，少血出，即愈。孙尚药∶治卒中风，昏
昏若醉，形体昏闷，四肢不收，或倒或不倒，或口角似利，微有涎出，斯须不治，便为大病，
故伤人也。此证风涎潮于
上，膈痹气不通，宜用救急稀涎散。猪牙皂角四挺，须是肥实不 ，削去黑皮，晋矾一两，
光明通莹者，二味同捣罗为
细末。再研为散。如有患者，可服半钱，重者三字匕，温水调灌下。不大呕吐，只是微微涎
稀冷，出或一升、二升。当
时惺惺次缓而调治。不可便大段吐之，恐过伤人命。累经效不能尽述。感应神仙传∶崔言者，
职隶左亲骑军，一旦得疾，
双眼昏，咫尺不辨人物，眉发自落，鼻梁崩倒，肌肤有疮如癣，皆为恶疾，势不可救。因为
洋州骆谷子归寨使，遇一道

味辛、咸，性温，有小毒。主治风痹、死肌（肌肤麻木不仁）、邪气侵袭头部导致的眼泪流出，通利九窍，杀灭精怪之物，治疗腹胀满，促进谷物消化，消除咳嗽，缓解囊结（阴囊肿大或结块），治疗妇人胞衣不下，明目，益精。可作为洗浴用药，但不宜入汤剂煎服。产于雍州川谷及鲁邹县，形状像猪牙的质地优良。九月、十月采集荚果，阴干。（柏实作为其引经药，与麦门冬相恶，畏惧空青、人参、苦参。）陶隐居说：现在到处都有，长一尺二寸的为优良。普通人看到它上面都有虫孔却从未见过虫形，都说不可靠近，会让人得恶病，其实并非如此。这种虫子形状像草菜上的青虫，荚果微黑时便出来，所以难以看见。只要取生的青色荚果查看，自然就知道原因了。《唐本草》注解说：此物有三种：猪牙皂荚最下等，形状弯曲恶劣，完全没有滋润之性，洗不掉污垢；长一尺二寸的，粗大长虚而没有滋润；如果长六、七寸，圆厚节短而直的，皮薄肉多，味道浓厚，非常好。臣禹锡等人按照《药性论》记载：皂荚，为使药。主治破除坚积症，腹中痛，能堕胎。又说：将皂荚放入酒中，取其精华，在火内煎成膏，涂在帛上，贴敷一切肿毒，兼能止痛。陈藏器说：鬼皂荚煮作浴汤，去除风疮疥癣，揉搓叶子可去除衣物污垢，洗头可使头发生长。生长在江南水泽边，像皂荚一样，高一、二尺。日华子说：皂荚，通关节，除头风，消痰，杀劳虫，治骨蒸潮热，开胃及中风牙关紧闭。入药需去皮、子，用酥油炙烤使用。

Saponariae Fructus (Zao Jia, 皂荚)
Pungent, salty, warm, slightly toxic. It primarily treats wind-bi (Wind-Bi syndrome), dead muscle (numbness and insensibility of skin and muscles), evil qi invading the head causing tears to flow, unblocks the nine orifices, kills spirit entities, treats abdominal distension and fullness, promotes digestion of grains, eliminates cough, relieves scrotal swelling or nodules, treats retained placenta in women, brightens the eyes, and benefits essence. It can be used as a bathing medicine but is not suitable for decoction. It grows in the rivers and valleys of Yongzhou and Zou County in Lu; those shaped like pig's teeth are of good quality. The pods are harvested in September and October and dried in the shade. (Platycladi Semen serves as its guiding herb; it is antagonistic with Ophiopogonis Radix; it fears Azurite, Ginseng Radix, and Sophorae Flavescentis Radix.) Tao Hongjing stated: Now it is found everywhere; those one chi two cun long are excellent. Ordinary people see holes caused by insects on them but have never seen the insects themselves, saying they should not be approached as they cause malignant diseases, which is not true. These insects resemble green caterpillars on grass and vegetables; they emerge when the pod turns slightly black, which is why they are hard to see. One only needs to examine fresh green pods to understand this. The Commentary of Tang Bencao notes: There are three types of this substance: Pig's tooth saponaria is the lowest grade, curved and ugly, lacking any moistening property, unable to wash away dirt; those one chi two cun long are thick, large, hollow, and lack moisture; if six to seven cun long, round, thick, with short nodes and straight, thin-skinned and fleshy, with strong flavor, these are very good. Minister Yuxi and others followed the commentary in Yao Xing Lun: Saponariae Fructus acts as an ushering herb. It treats breaking up hard accumulations, abdominal pain, and can induce abortion. It also states: Soak Saponariae Fructus in wine, extract its essence, boil into a paste over fire, apply on silk to treat all swellings and toxins, and it can also stop pain. Chen Cangqi stated: Ghost Saponaria boiled as a bath soup removes wind sores and tinea; rubbing leaves removes clothing stains and promotes hair growth when washing hair. It grows by the marshes in Jiangnan, about one to two chi high, resembling Saponaria. Ri Huazi stated: Saponariae Fructus unblocks joints, removes head wind, resolves phlegm, kills labor worms, treats bone-steaming fever, opens the stomach, and treats stroke with locked jaw. For medicinal use, remove skin and seeds, and roast with lard.
Tu Jing stated: Saponariae Fructus grows in the rivers and valleys of Yongzhou and Zou County, now available everywhere, with those from Huai and Meng prefectures being superior. The trees can be very tall. There are three types: Ben Jing states that those shaped like pig's teeth are good. Tao's commentary states those one chi two cun long are good. Tang's commentary states those six cun long, round, thick, with short nodes and straight, thin-skinned, fleshy, and strong-flavored are very good. Currently, physicians use long Saponariae Fructus for making Shu Feng Qi Wan and decoctions, while using Pig's tooth Saponariae Fructus for treating dental issues and removing stagnation. Although used differently, their nature and flavor are generally similar. Harvested in September and October, dried in the shade. Zhang Zhongjing's formulas for miscellaneous diseases state that for coughing with reversed qi, spitting turbid saliva, able to sit but not lie down, Sao Jiao Wan is prescribed. Saponariae Fructus powder, one ingredient honey-pilled like wu zi (Cocculus Indicus fruit size), taken with jujube paste and water, one pill three times a day and once at night. Cui Yuanliang's Hai Shang Fang treats abdominal distension and fullness leading to emaciation. Pig's tooth Saponariae Fructus measured continuously to one chi long, roasted over mild fire, skin and seeds removed, pounded and sifted, honey-pilled like wu zi. Before taking medicine, eat two pieces of boiled mutton, sip the broth, then take ten pills with meat broth, stopping when bowel movement becomes loose. If feeling strong effects, take more; stop when clear watery stool occurs. For one month after recovery, avoid meat and greasy foods. It also treats heat-labor. Use continuous Saponariae Fructus one chi long, must be solid without holes, lightly coated with earth lard, slow-roasted over fire until lard is absorbed, then pounded and sifted, honey-pilled like wu zi. Take fifteen pills on an empty stomach daily with drink, gradually increasing to twenty pills. Severe cases recover within two courses. Its young leaf buds, eaten as vegetables, are beneficial. The white flesh inside the seed also enters lung-treating medicines. Additionally, roasted yellow heart chewed treats diaphragm phlegm and acid regurgitation. Also, tender thorns boiled with rice vinegar into a thick decoction applied to sores and tinea has miraculous effects.
Lei Gong stated: When using, select red, fine, fat, and non-bitten ones. Soak in fresh well water overnight, scrape off coarse skin with a copper knife, roast repeatedly with lard until lard is exhausted. Then pound, remove seeds, and sift. One liang of Saponariae Fructus with two fen of lard yields seeds. Select round, hard, non-bitten ones, boil in a bottle near fire until cooked, peel off one layer of hard skin, take two pieces of inner white tender flesh, remove yellow part as it consumes kidney qi. Cut white pieces finely with copper knife, dry in sun. Sheng Hui Fang: Treats epidemic qi for three days, headache, irritability, and fever. Burn Saponariae Fructus to ash, powder. At any time, mix two qian with one zhan of fresh well water, a little ginger juice and honey. Bathe in warm water first, then take medicine; sweat will appear shortly and cure. Wai Tai Mi Yao treats sudden stroke with locked jaw. Five liang of Saponariae Fructus, skin removed, powdered, mixed with three-year-old vinegar. Apply to left corner if right is affected, and vice versa; reapply when dry until cured. Another formula for dental caries: Pound Saponariae Fructus, remove skin, roast to powder, apply to teeth, spit out. Another formula for drowning victims alive after one night: Wrap pounded Saponariae Fructus in paper, insert into lower orifice; water will drain and patient revives. Qian Jin Fang: Nasal polyps. Roast Saponariae Fructus powder to size of small beans, blow into nose with bamboo tube. Another formula for sleep paralysis: Knife-edge amount of Saponariae Fructus powder revives the dead. Another formula for difficult labor: Swallow two Saponariae Fructus seeds, immediate cure. Zhou Hou Fang: Sudden whole-body and facial edema. Peel and roast Saponariae Fructus until yellow, chop three sheng, soak in one dou of wine, boil in vessel until boiling, take one sheng, three times a day, frequently prepared. Another formula for malignant sores on children's bodies: Wash with Saponariae Fructus water first, dry. Paste crushed sesame oil, cure when scorched.
Jing Yan Fang: Treats food qi causing whole-body yellow swelling, asthma, inability to eat, chest fullness. Non-bitten Saponariae Fructus (remove skin and seeds, coat with good vinegar, roast until charred, powder) one qian bi, seven Badi Fructus (remove oil and membrane). Mix with light vinegar and ground ink, pill like hemp seeds. Take three pills after meals, increase by one pill daily, stop when loose stools occur. Regular use digests alcohol and food. Mei Shi Fang: Treats cholera with muscle cramps. Blow a small bean-sized amount of Saponariae Fructus powder into nose; sneezing brings cure. Another formula for sudden unilateral testicular pain: Powder Saponariae Fructus with skin, mix with water, apply externally, effective. Sun Simiao burns Saponariae Fructus, grinds fine, takes three qian with millet drink, immediate relief. Another formula for colds regardless of yin/yang, miraculous: One strip of fat Saponariae Fructus, burn until red, powder, mix with five he of water; for yin/yang colds, mix with wine. Another formula for waist and legs unable to touch ground: Take 1200 seeds, wash clean, dry, roast with little lard until fragrant, take thirty pills with seed and sour jujube seed decoction. Another formula for sudden death: Blow powder into nose. Another formula for sleep paralysis: Blow powder into nose. Dou Men Fang: Treats sudden headache. Blow Saponariae Fructus powder into nose, sneezing stops pain. Jian Yao Ji Zhong: Treats stroke with locked jaw and salivary flooding. One strip of Saponariae Fructus, remove skin, powder. Take one qian bi with warm wine at any time. If qi excess and pulse vigorous, take two qian bi. If jaw locked, rub teeth with white plum, open mouth, pour medicine, cure when wind-phlegm is vomited. Bo Ji Fang: Treats hot pain from entering bad water or Saponariae water into mouth. Burn Saponariae Fructus seeds to retain nature, one fen, half liang rock sugar. Grind seeds fine, mix evenly with rock sugar into paste, hold in mouth. Shi Quan Fang: Treats toothache. Use... Bu Jiu Fang: Remove skin and seeds of Saponariae Fructus... soon breaks, slight bleeding, cure. Sun Shang Yao: Treats sudden stroke, drowsy as if drunk, body heavy, limbs flaccid, falling or not, mouth corner twitching, slight saliva, if not treated immediately becomes severe disease harming people. This syndrome involves wind-phlegm flooding upward, diaphragm obstruction, qi blocked, should use Jiu Ji Xi Xian San.
