Yi Zhi Zi (Alpinia oxyphylla Fruit)
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats seminal emission and deficiency-type leakage, dribbling after urination; benefits Qi, calms the Shen (Spirit), tonifies insufficiency, stabilizes the San Jiao (Triple Burner: Upper, Middle, and Lower Jiao), and regulates various Qi mechanisms.
For those with frequent nocturia, take 24 fruits, crush them, decoct with salt, and ingest; this yields remarkable results. According to *Shan Hai Jing* (Classic of Mountains and Seas): Grows in Kunlun State. (Currently appended here.)
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note Chen Cangqi's statement: Stops vomiting and hiccups. *Guang Zhi* records: Leaves resemble lotus leaves, over a zhang long. Small branches grow on its roots, reaching a height of...
*Tu Jing* (Illustrated Canon) records: Yi Zhi Zi grows in Kunlun State; nowadays, it is often found in prefectures and commanderies of Lingnan. Leaves resemble lotus leaves, over a zhang long. Small branches grow from the sides of the roots, reaching a height of... Bearing spike-like inflorescences at the top, fruits are about the size of dates. The skin is white, the kernel inside is black; kernels that are fine/small are superior. Holding it in the mouth helps control saliva secretion. Harvested at any time. Lu Xun, while serving as Prefect of Guangzhou, sent Liu Yu "Yi Zhi Zong" (Zongzi made with Yi Zhi Zi); Liu Yu replied with Xu Ming Tang (Life-Extending Decoction), referring to this plant.
*Qimin Yaoshu* (Essential Techniques for the Welfare of the People) records: Yi Zhi Zi can block salivary secretions and filth. Gu Wei's *Guangzhou Ji* records: Yi Zhi, leaves like lotus, stems like bamboo arrows, fruits emerge from the center. One branch bears ten fruits; the fruit flesh is white and slippery. It can be split into four parts and discarded, or the outer skin boiled with honey to make Zongzi, which tastes pungent.
Sou Shu (Deutzia Scabra Root)
Pungent and bitter in flavor, cold and slightly cold in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats heat in the skin and body surface, eliminates pathogenic factors, stops enuresis/involuntary urination, promotes free flow of water passages, and removes lower abdominal distension/Qi stagnation. Can be used to prepare bathing decoctions. Also known as Ju Gu. Grows in valleys of Xiong'er River and fields/old mound ruins. Harvested in April. (Lou Lu serves as its guiding herb/enforcer.) Tao Hongjing states: Li Yun says, Sou Shu is also known as Yang Lu, Mu Jing, Kong Shu. Bark is white and hollow, occasionally jointed. Fruits resemble Goji berries, ripen in winter, red in color, sweet and bitter in taste. In later generations, no one recognized it. This is indeed the authentic species. It is not the Yang Lu that climbs fences. Li Dangzhi's description, when discussing Mu Jing, was not significantly deviant, but erroneously included Sou Shu, which is likely a mistake. Furthermore, he stated that Sou Shu differs from Kong Shu. "Jue Er" is suspected to be a typo for "Xiong Er." Xiong Er is a mountain name; there is no such designation as "Jue Er." *Tang Ben Zhu* (Tang Dynasty Supplemental Notes) records: Sou Shu resembles Kong Shu in shape, trees are about a zhang high, with white bark. Its fruits ripen in August and September, are red, resemble Goji berries, taste bitter, and always grow in pairs, differing from Kong Shu. Kong Shu is also known as Yang Lu Zi, producing pods, unlike Sou Shu. Current annotations note that although Sou Shu and Goji look similar, Sou Shu has thorns while Goji does not, which serves as the distinction. Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note that detailed descriptions are already provided under the Goji entry in *Tu Jing*.
