Fenxi (Lead Carbonate)
Taste: Acrid. Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Treats latent corpse-poison and insect stings; kills the "Three Parasites" (Ascaris, Enterobius, Fasciolopsis); eliminates biemia (abdominal masses); treats malignant sores; induces abortion; stops polyuria. Also known as Jiexi (Dissolving Tin).
Tao Hongjing stated: It is the Hu Fen (Basic Lead Carbonate) made by refining lead currently. The variety with a golden hue is more effective in treating corpse-parasites, yet it is called Fenxi, which contradicts the classic texts.
The *Tang Bencao* annotation states: Qiandan (Lead Tetroxide) and Hufen are actually made from tin. Tao's current statement that it is made from refined lead, and the *Classic* text calling it Fenxi, are both errors. Current annotations follow the *Benjing* in calling it Fenxi, but it is essentially Qianfen (Lead Powder). Therefore, Li Ji noted in his preface: "Those who cannot distinguish between lead and tin," likely refers to this substance. Minister Yuxi et al. cautiously followed the *Yaoxing Lun*, stating:
Hu Fen, when used as medicine, is also named Dingfen. Taste: Sweet, Acrid. Nature: Non-toxic. Capable of treating accumulated stagnation that does not dissipate; when charred, it stops infantile malnutrition dysentery. Chen Cangqi stated: Besides its original functions, Hu Fen treats chronic dysentery leading to malnutrition. Mixed with water and egg white for oral administration, taken until stools turn black, because it kills parasites and stops dysentery. Ri Huazi stated: Guangfen (Polished Powder), Nature: Cool, Non-toxic. Treats carbuncles and swelling with ulceration, vomiting and regurgitation, zhengjia (masses), and infantile malnutrition qi deficiency.
*Tujing Wenju* has detailed records under the entry for "Qiantiao" (Lead Strip).
*Waitai Miyao*: For accidentally swallowed coins and gold/silver objects. Use one liang of Hu Fen, crush and mix; divide into two doses, take with water. It causes mercury and gold to become like mud, dissolving the swallowed gold/silver objects so they can be excreted. *Qianjin Fang*: To treat weeping sores. Mix equal parts of Hu Fen and charcoal ash, blend with animal fat, and apply to the opening; fluid secretion will stop. Another prescription: To treat various types of axillary osmidrosis. Take three he of Hu Fen, mix with beef tallow, boil until malleable into pills, and apply. *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*: For severe illness newly onset due to early overexertion, where excessive eating/drinking leads to recurrence and near-death state: Take a small amount of Hu Fen dissolved in water. *Shanghan Leiyao* agrees. Another prescription: For sudden fall from height, blood stasis attacking the heart, cyanotic face, shortness of breath, and near-death state: Take one qianbi of Hu Fen, mixed with water; recovery follows. Sun Simiao's *Shiji*: For burns, mix Hu Fen with sheep marrow, apply, and bandage. *Shiyi Xinjing*: For mouth ulcers on infants' tongues. Apply powder of Hu Fen mixed with pig bone marrow, three times daily. Zhang Wenzhong: For dry/wet tinea and perineal dampness with odor, or formation of sores. Simply dust with single herb Hu Fen; cessation occurs immediately, commonly proving highly effective. *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* agrees. Another prescription: For Taeniidae (tapeworm). Roast Hu Fen until thoroughly dry, form into meat-filled pill size, ingest at dawn; significant efficacy observed. Another prescription: Infantile malnutrition sores. Roast eight fen of Hu Fen, mix with lard, apply; continue until healed, oil is also acceptable. *Zimu Milu*: For infant nocturnal crying. Mix Hu Fen with water to the size of three beans, administer three times daily. Another prescription: Infantile abdominal distension. Roast Hu Fen with salt until color changes, rub onto abdomen; also treats bluish discoloration of abdominal skin. If untreated, death ensues shortly. Another prescription: For infantile innocent dysentery (red and white stool) complicated by malnutrition. Steam Hu Fen thoroughly, roast until color changes, administer with drink. Another prescription: For postauricular eczema (moon-eating sore) in infants, mix Hu Fen with earth and apply. *Danfang Jingyuan* states: Hu Fen can neutralize sulfur and may also be used externally.
*Yanyi* states: Fenxi is Hu Fen, also named Dingfen. Stops diarrhea/dysentery, resolves accumulations, and treats chronic dysentery.
