Sui Sui Zi (Euphorbia lathyris)
Pungent, warm, toxic. Primarily treats blood stasis and amenorrhea in women, zheng jia (abdominal masses), pi (accumulations between the hypochondrium), blood stasis, gu du (parasitic or toxic diseases), gui zhu (infectious chronic wasting disease), heart and abdominal pain, distension and fullness caused by cold qi, unblocks the large and small intestines, eliminates phlegm-fluid retention and accumulations, and expels foul stagnant matter. The white juice from the stem can peel human facial skin and remove melasma. (Note: Grows in Shu commandery and is found everywhere.) The seedling resembles Da Ji (Eupherbia pekinensis). Also known as Ju Dong, also known as Qian Jin Zi. (Currently attached)
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note according to the *Shu Ben Cao*: Treats accumulations, phlegm-fluid retention, inability to eat, vomiting and regurgitation, and various internal abdominal diseases. Grind the drug into powder and take with wine; no more than three pills should be taken, which will likely cause the expulsion of foul stagnant matter. Ri Hua Zi states: Promotes the resolution of all types of retained stagnation, treats lung qi disorders and water qi disorders, applies externally to treat various malignant sores, scabies, and tinea corporis. For single prescriptions, take ten pills daily. If diarrhea is excessive, consuming sour plant water and thin vinegar porridge will stop it. Also known as Pu Sa Dou. Qian Liang Jin: Apply leaf juice externally to vitiligo and remove facial melasma.
*Tu Jing* states: Sui Sui Zi grows in Shu commandery and is found everywhere. Currently, it is abundant in the south and less common in the north. The seedling resembles Da Ji. Initially, a single stem emerges; leaves grow at the stem tip, and several stems continue to emerge from among the leaves. The flowers also resemble those of Da Ji, emerging on stalks drawn from among the leaves. The fruit is green and has a shell. It is widely planted in residential gardens and pavilions for decoration. Planted in autumn, it grows in winter. It blossoms in spring and fruits in summer. Hence, it is also named Ju Dong. The fruit is used medicinally, collected at any time. It has the fastest purgative effect but is toxic and damaging if overused; do not exceed the appropriate dose. Cui Yuanliang's *Hai Shang Fang*: Treats swelling and toxicity from snake bites, causing distress approaching death. Use Chong Lou (Paris polyphylla) 6 fen, and Sui Sui Zi 7 seeds. Remove the shells, crush and sift the two substances into a powder. Take one cun bi (a measure equivalent to a square inch spoonful) with wine, mix with saliva and apply a small amount to the bite site; recovery is immediate. The white juice from the stem applied to the face removes melasma with great efficacy.
Dou Men Fang: Treats water qi disorder. Use Lian Bu (referring to the kernel of Sui Sui Zi) 1 liang. Remove the shell, grind, wrap in paper, and press with objects to extract the oil. Re-grind into powder, divide into seven doses. For each patient, only one dose is administered. Males take it down with ginger cake decoction; females take it down with Schizonepeta decoction. Administer during the first watch of the night (Wu Geng); by evening, the purgation will naturally cease. Afterwards, tonify with Hou Po Tang (Magnolia Bark Decoction). Frequent consumption is beneficial. Still, avoid salt and vinegar for one hundred days until recovery. "Lian Bu" refers to Sui Sui Zi.
