Pepper: Pungent in flavor, greatly warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily directs Qi downward, warms the middle Jiao, resolves phlegm-fluids, and eliminates wind-cold pathogenic factors affecting the Zang-Fu organs. It originates from the Western Regions. Its shape resembles that of a mouse plum; it is used to season food and has a very pungent taste. (First appended in *Xinxiu Bencao*)
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note according to *Rihuaizi Zhujia Bencao*: It regulates the Five Viscera, stops cholera-like disorders (Huoluan), treats cold pain in the heart and abdomen, strengthens Kidney Qi, and primarily treats cold dysentery. It kills toxins from all fish, meat, turtles, and mushrooms.
*Haiyao Bencao* states: Respectfully noting Xu Biao's *Nanzhou Ji*: It grows in various countries south of the sea. It removes deficiency-cold in the Stomach Qi, indigestion of retained food, rebellious Qi due to cholera-like disorders, sudden pain in the heart and abdomen, and upward rushing of cold Qi. It harmonizes Qi but should not be taken in large quantities, as it damages the Lungs. Another view holds that those growing in shade are *Chengqie* (Litsea cubeba), while those growing in sunlight are Pepper. Leigong states: When processing pepper, only use fruits without internal wrinkles, as they possess greater efficacy. For Sichuan pepper (*Hanjiao*), the husk is used; for pepper, the fruit is used. After trimming and selecting, grind them into powder using a stone mortar. *Shiliao Bencao* states: It treats wind-cold in the Five Viscera, cold Qi causing heart and abdominal pain, and vomiting clear fluids; taking it with wine is excellent. It is also suitable for decoction. In cases of severe cold Qi, swallow three to seven grains. Sun Simiao treated cholera-like disorders by administering thirty to forty grains of pepper swallowed with water. Duan Chengshi's *Youyang Zazu* states: Pepper comes from the Kingdom of Magadha, where it is called "Meilizhi." Its stems grow as vines; the stems are extremely tender, about one and a half cun long. Fine tendrils align with the leaves, bearing fruits that grow in pairs. The leaves open in the morning and close at dusk, enclosing the fruits within the leaves when closed. They resemble Sichuan pepper in shape but are extremely pungent. Harvested in the sixth month, it is now used in Hujian-style meat dishes.
*Yanyi* states: Pepper removes cold-phlegm from the Stomach, treating vomiting of clear fluids and immediate postprandial vomiting, with marked efficacy. Overdose causes dispersion of Qi. It is also used for cold-slippery conditions of the Large Intestine, but must be applied according to specific indications.
Hook-fragrant Camphor Root Bark: Primarily treats metal wounds and stops bleeding.
Tao Hongjing states: It grows in Guiyang, Shaoling, and other places, and is also called Wuzhang. Physicians rarely use it, though many common people recognize it. Scraping the root bark dust treats metal wounds; it stops bleeding easily and promotes rapid healing, with significant efficacy.
There is another herb resembling wild wolf's tooth, with a pungent and foul odor, named Disong, commonly called Liuhuo Grass. Collected on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month and dried into flakes. It also treats metal wounds. It is said that Liu Huo previously utilized it. *Xinxiu Bencao* annotation notes: Hook-fragrant camphor grows in the valleys of Chenzhou. The tree is over one zhang high. The leaves resemble Nanmu leaves but are pointed and elongated, with red hairs on the underside, similar to Loquat leaves. The root bark is harvested in the eighth and ninth months and sun-dried.
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note: Treats cholera-like disorders. *Rihuaizi Zhujia Bencao* states: Warm in nature, non-toxic.
Treats running piglet syndrome (Benpeng), Hongkong foot (swelling and pain in the feet), and edema. Decoct and take internally, and decoct the bark for external washing of sores, wind-rashes, scabies, and tinea. Chen Cangqi states: Camphor wood material is pungent and repels foul odors. It treats sudden evil invasion, heart and abdominal pain, Gui Zhu (a type of infectious or mental disorder), cholera-like disorders, abdominal distension, indigestion of retained food, and frequent vomiting of sour, foul-smelling fluids. Take after boiling in wine. It can be used in areas lacking medicinal supplies. Ships in the Jiangdong region often use camphor wood, cutting planks for construction. The more pungent and intense the aroma, the better. It can also be used as a bath decoction to treat Hongkong foot, remove scabies and wind-itch, and make shoe inserts to treat Hongkong foot. The county name Yuzhang derives its name from this tree.
