Araneus: Slightly cold in nature. It treats forgetfulness (amnesia) in adults and children. Collect its web on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month to treat memory loss.
Tao Hongjing stated: There are dozens of species of spiders, but *Erya* only records seven or eight kinds. The medicinal variety currently used is the one that hangs webs like fish nets, also called *Zhumao* (Spider). When stung by bees or centipedes, placing a spider on the wound can absorb the venom. It is also used to treat malaria and dry vomiting associated with cholera. Practitioners of arts and magic place its web in their collars to ward off forgetfulness. Those with red spots are commonly known as *Luoxinfu* and are also included in prescriptions; they are used by practitioners of these arts. Other miscellaneous species are not used medicinally. The *Book of Songs* states: "Xiaoshao [long-jawed orb weaver] at the door," which refers precisely to this. The *Tang Ben Cao Zhu* notes: *Bielu* states it treats pediatric abdominal tingingxi (a type of abdominal tumor or hardness), where the child cannot walk for three years. It also treats snake venom, warm malaria, and cholera, stopping vomiting and reflux. In Jiannan and Shandong regions, bites from this insect cause wounds that exude silk, with frequent fatalities. Its web wrapped around skin tags (acrochordons) causes them to rot and disappear within seven days, which has proven effective. Chen Yuxi et al. followed up with Ri Hua Zi's comments: Spotted spiders are cold and non-toxic. They treat malaria and carbuncles. Eating the web collected on the morning of the Double Seventh Festival makes one agile and cures forgetfulness. He also mentioned the "wall money" spider (Uloboridae), which is neutral and slightly toxic. It treats infantile regurgitation, stops epistaxis and sores. Its juice applied to the nose and sores treats various ulcers. This is the spider that spins cocoons on walls.
*Tujing* states: Spiders were not previously recorded regarding their native provinces, but now they are found everywhere. Their varieties are extremely numerous. *Erya* says: Cidu [moth-eating larva], Zhizhu [spider]. Zhizhu, Zhumao. Guo Pu said: In Jiangdong, they call [Mao] "mao." He also said: Earth spiders spin webs on the ground; grass spiders spin webs over grass; Xiaoshao [long-jawed orb weaver] and Changjiao [long-legged spiders], small spiders with long legs, are commonly called Xizi (lucky spiders). Tao Hongjing said: The ones to be used are those hanging in webs like fish traps, also named Zhumao. Thus, the Zhumao mentioned in *Erya* is what Guo Pu referred to as Mao. Ancient prescriptions: Treat snake, bee, and centipede venom, as well as pediatric abdominal tingingxi and acrochordons. For modern snake bites, apply its juice. For pediatric abdominal malnutrition (gan), roast and consume it. For acrochordons, wrap them with its web silk. For bee and centipede stings, place the live spider on the painful area to suck out the toxin, all of which are effective. However, this insect bites humans severely; only drinking goat milk can counteract its toxicity. This comes from Liu Yuxi's *Chuanxin Fang*. Zhang Zhongjing's prescription for miscellaneous diseases: For Yin Hu Shan Qi (scrotal hernia) characterized by asymmetry and intermittent movement up and down, Araneus Powder is the primary treatment. Roast fourteen araneus until charred, combine with half liang of Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), grind into powder. Take one-eighteenth of a spoonful per dose, twice daily. Honey pills are also acceptable.
Lei Gong's processing instructions: Do not use five-colored ones, nor those with prickly hairs on large bodies, nor thin and small ones; none of these are suitable. To select authentic specimens, look for those with webs facing west on houses, small bodies, large hindquarters, and containing greenish-yellow pus in the abdomen. To prepare, remove the head and legs, grind into a paste, and add to medicines.
*Shenghui Fang* treats scrofula (luoli), regardless of whether there is an opening or not. Use five large araneus, dry them, grind finely, mix with lard to the consistency of facial cream, and apply twice daily.
*Waitai Miyao*, Cui Shi's method for warts: Wrap the wart with spider web silk until it falls off naturally. *Qianjin Fang* for stroke causing facial deviation: Rub spider eggs on the tense cheek near the Jiache acupoint; stop when symmetry returns. Alternatively, rub towards the fire. Another formula for back sores: Grind a spider near the door, mix with vinegar. First puncture the four sides to let blood out, exposing the root slightly, then apply the medicine. Change when dry; pull out the root from morning to night, showing great efficacy. Another formula for bubonic swelling and pain, if there is already an open sore discharging pus: Burn fourteen araneus and apply the ash, which is good. Another formula for mental cloudiness and frequent forgetfulness/mistakes: Place a spider web in the collar on the seventh day of the seventh month without letting others know, ensuring permanent memory retention. Another formula for sudden rectal prolapse: Burn the spider's abdomen and apply to the anus. Sun Simiao's *Beiji Qianjin Yaofang* treats dental caries: Wrap one spider shell in cotton and press it inside the cavity. *Guangli Fang* treats scorpion stings: Grind spider juice and apply; it heals. *Chengxian Fang* for prolonged diarrhea with rectal prolapse and pain: Black Holy Powder. Take one large araneus, wrap tightly in calabash leaves, tie with thread, burn in a container until blackened but retaining its properties, grind finely, add a little lead tetroxide (Huandan), and mix. For the above conditions, first wash with decoction of alum, scallion, and pepper, dry thoroughly, sprinkle the powder on the soft area, cover with cloth, and use the palm to push the prolapsed part back in; this is excellent. Tan Shi's formula for tied fingers and tumors: Use the large web silk from a flower spider, soak in Huandan, tie the finger or tumor; it will fall off overnight. Sun Simiao for centipede bites: Place one spider on the bite site; it will drink the poison and die. If pain persists, apply another fresh one. *Chanbao Fang* for postpartum hiccups lasting three to five days: Decoct three or five wall money nests and sip; it heals.
*Yanyi* states: There are many varieties of spiders, all toxic, but the classics do not specify which kind to use. Nowadays, people mostly use those spinning round webs in the air at eaves, fence tops, or in dirty alleys. Those with large abdomens and dark gray color urinate on people, causing sores and tinea.
