Salty in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It primarily calms the mind and spirit (An Xin Shen), strengthens bone marrow (Jian Gu Sui), eliminates various diseases, whitens the complexion, moistens the skin, and makes one ageless, robust, and able to eat well. Long-term consumption causes the body to become heavy, obese, and dark; when combined with other herbs, each has its specific indications. The preparation of iron powder involves flying and refining methods, which are too numerous to record here. People often take scrap iron, grind it into filings, and fly-refine it to increase its weight; true steel does not behave this way. The so-called "needle sand" (Zhen Sha) is sold by market vendors who mistakenly grind iron into filings, mix them with sand, and fly-refine them into powder; even experts in flying and refining cannot distinguish them. (Iron powder made from steel is superior. Attached here.)
The *Tu Jing* records details under the entry for Iron.
Pungent and sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It treats wind-heat, malignant sores, ulcers, carbuncles, scabs, and scabies; qi stagnation in the skin; clears heat from the chest and diaphragm; treats anorexia; stops irritability; and removes black spots. Also known as Iron Liquid (Tie Ye). It can be used to dye hair black. It grows in Pingze of Muye, or in Fen City or Xi City. It can be harvested at any time.
Minister Yuxi et al. note according to Ri Hua Zi: Iron Liquid treats heart palpitations due to evil influences, all kinds of venomous snake and insect bites, as well as wounds from silkworms and lacquer; intestinal wind and hemorrhoids; prolapse of the rectum; epidemic febrile diseases causing mania; and can also be used to dye beard and hair. Current annotation: Explanation found under the entry for Iron Essence (Tie Jing).

Steel (Gang Tie)
Sweet in flavor, non-toxic. It treats metal wounds (Jin Chuang), irritability and fullness, internal heat, qi obstruction in the chest and diaphragm, and indigestion. Also known as Jumping Iron (Tiao Tie). Current annotation: Explanation found under the entry for Coin Essence (Qian Jing).
The *Tu Jing* records details under the entry for Iron.
It primarily strengthens muscles and increases pain tolerance.
Minister Yuxi et al. note according to the Detailed Determinations of Bencao: Refers to the making of wrought iron. Ri Hua Zi says: Iron, pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, toxic. It fears magnetite, ash, and charcoal, etc., and can counteract the toxicity of Shitingzhi. Current annotation: Found under the entry for Iron Essence (Tie Jing).
The *Tu Jing* states: Iron, the *Ben Jing* states: Iron Lu falls from Pingze of Muye, or from Fen City or Xi City. For various irons whose origin provinces are unknown, they should likely be from the same place. Currently, wherever there are smelting furnaces in Jiangnan and Western Shu, they are available. Iron Lu refers to the fine skin flakes struck off an anvil when people burn iron until red-hot and boiling, commonly called Iron Flowers. Iron that is initially smelted to remove slag and used for casting vessels is raw iron (Sheng Tie). Iron that undergoes repeated smelting and hammering and can be forged into utensils is wrought iron (Shu Tie), also called forged iron. Steel (Gang Tie) is made by mixing raw and wrought iron to create blades for swords and knives. Iron Essence (Tie Jing) consists of particles flying out of the furnace like dust, purple in color, light and porous, used for polishing copper. Needle Sand (Zhen Sha) is the fine powder ground by needle makers. Iron Slurry (Tie Jiang) is obtained by soaking various irons in water for a long time until the color turns green and foam appears, which can be used to dye hair black. Iron Flower Powder (Tie Hua Fen) is scraped from pieces of iron beaten flat and placed in vinegar lees over a long period until a layer forms. Iron Powder (Tie Fen) is produced by flying and refining in fire. There are specific methods for making Iron Flower Powder, which are too numerous to record. None of the various irons are directly used in pills and powders; only decoctions are used. Iron Flower Powder is ground extremely finely and mixed with other medicines. Additionally, horse bits, scale weights, wheel hubs, pestles, saws, etc., are all heated red-hot and quenched in wine for use. Water from grinding knife and axe edges is used medicinally. These are folk remedies proven effective, hence recorded.
Bieshuo states: According to notes, Iron Slurry is made by soaking raw iron in water for ingestion. One takes a sip daily, adding fresh water as needed. After many days, a yellow paste forms on the iron, enhancing its potency, making the body light and healthy. This is what Taifei of Tang consumed. If one uses the slurry intended for dyeing hair, its sour, bitter, foul, and astringent taste would be unbearable, let alone for ingestion.
