Taste bitter, nature neutral, non-toxic. Primarily treats heat in bone joints, heaviness and soreness in the shins, dizziness with a sensation of heaviness at the vertex, pathogenic wind invading the skin like bee stings or needle pricks, fish-egg-like small eruptions on the skin, hot sores, carbuncles, hemorrhoids, damp-bi syndrome, stops cough caused by pathogenic wind, and promotes lactation. Long-term consumption makes the body light, benefits qi, brightens the eyes, prevents aging; it can be boiled or dried. Also known as Loulu (Leontodon hispidus), Tianqi, Fuzhu, Feiqing, Futu, Feizhi, and Muhe. Grows in rivers and marshes of Henei. Roots are harvested in the first lunar month, flowers in the seventh and eighth months, and dried in shade. (Incompatible with Wudalian, adverse reaction with Mahuang.)
Tao Hongjing stated: It is found everywhere, resembling Ku (Wulaoqie), but its leaves attach to the stem underneath, the surface is slightly raised like arrow feathers, the leaves have many incisions, and the flowers are purple. It is rarely used in secular prescriptions, but Daoists consume its branches and stems for longevity, and it is also included in the Shen Zhen prescription. Since there is now another Loulu, this is not that alias. The Tang Ben Zhu noted: There are two types: one is what Tao verified, growing in flat marshes. Those growing on hillsides have similar leaves but lack incisions, are hairy, stems lack feather-like features, roots grow straight down without side branches, flesh is white and skin black when fresh, with black veins inside, turning black like Xuanshen when dried. Leaves, stems, and roots are used to treat gan erosion, kill parasites, and are effective just like those from flat marshes. Currently, people mistakenly use Maji (Cirsium japonicum) treated as Ku to serve as Loulu, which is incorrect. Chen Yuxi et al. consulted the Shu Ben Tu Jing stating: Leaves resemble Ku, stems resemble soft feathers, purple flowers, seeds with white hairs. It is present in flat marshes everywhere, harvested in the fifth and sixth months, and dried in the sun. Yao Xing Lun states: Feilian is an assistant drug, taste bitter and salty, toxic. Primarily treats retained blood. Xiao Bing stated: For pediatric gan dysentery, make into powder, administer with Jiangshui (fermented grain liquid), highly effective.
Lei Gong stated: When using, do not use Chizhiman, which resembles Feilian in shape; however, Chizhiman turns blood-red upon contact with wine, allowing for distinction. For processing, first scrape off the coarse skin, pound, mix with Kujiu (sour wine) overnight, strain the next morning, dry in the sun, and finely pound before use. Qianjin Yi: Treats gan accumulation food stagnation affecting oral teeth and lower parts. Feilianhao burned to ash and sifted, apply two qian bi (measurements) to the painful area; it causes severe pain, endure it; if no pain, it is not gan disease. Worms in the lower part are as large as horse tails, entangled and emerging in countless numbers. Cured in ten days, recovered in twenty days.
