[Malan]
Taste: Acrid (Xin). Nature: Neutral (Ping). Toxicity: Non-toxic (Wu Du). Indications: Mainly treats breaking up old blood stasis, nourishing new blood, promoting healing of metal wounds, stopping bloody dysentery, neutralizing gu poison, resolving wine jaundice, stopping epistaxis, hematemesis, and various mushroom poisons. Freshly crushed and applied externally for snake bites. Grows by the marshes, with an odor similar to Eupatorium fortunei (Zelan); in the Chu Ci, it is used as a metaphor for evil people using noxious weeds. In the north, its flowers are called Purple Chrysanthemum because the flowers resemble chrysanthemums and are purple. There is also Shanlan, growing on mountain sides, resembling Polygonum aviculare (Liujinu), leaves without branches, not opposite, flower center slightly yellow-red, also having strong blood-breaking effects, widely used by commoners. (New supplement: See Chen Cangqi and Ri Huazi.)
The text from Tu Jing is under the entry for Eupatorium fortunei (Zelan).
[Shijunzi]
Taste: Sweet (Gan). Nature: Warm (Wen). Toxicity: Non-toxic (Wu Du). Indications: Mainly treats five types of childhood malnutrition (Wugan), turbid white urine, expels parasites, and treats diarrhea and dysentery. Grows in Jiaozhou, Guangzhou, and other prefectures. Shape resembles Gardenia jasminoides fruits (Zhizi), with deep lobes and pointed ends, also resembling Terminalia chebula (Helile) but lighter. Folklore states that initially, Guo Shijun from Panzhou treated children mostly by using this herb alone, and later physicians named it Shijunzi. (Currently attached.)
Tu Jing states: Shijunzi grows in Jiaozhou, Guangzhou, and other prefectures; now it is found in all prefectures of Lingnan, growing in mountains, wilds, and water banks. Its leaves are green, the size of two fingers side-by-side, two cun long. In spring, stems become vines, finger-thick, flowering in March, pale red, turning deep red over time, with five petals. Fruits form in July-August, thumb-sized, about one cun long, largely like Zhizi but with five ridges; shell is blue-black, containing white kernels, harvested in July.
Yanyi states: Shijunzi is purple-black, with high four ridges and deep lobes. The current "Jing" refers to "deep lobes," which is hard to understand. At the end of autumn and beginning of winter, when people enter Dingzhou and Lizhou, its taste resembles coconut meat. The "Jing" does not specify using the kernel, implying the use of the peel. However, based on the text "taste sweet," it implies using the flesh/meat. Kernels are rare and very small. Current physicians sometimes use the shell as well.
[Gantai]
Taste: Salty (Xian). Nature: Cold (Han). One source says: Warm (Wen). Indications: Mainly treats hemorrhoids, expels parasites, stops persistent vomiting due to cholera-like disease, taken as decoction. For those with heart and abdominal irritability, ground into mud with cold water and drunk to stop symptoms. Also treats various sores and scabies, expels Dan Shi toxins, and kills various drug poisons. Do not eat too much, as it causes sallow complexion and lack of blood color. Kills wood-boring insects; placed in wood holes, it expels Dan Shi from marine creatures. (New supplement: See Meng Shen, Chen Cangqi, Ri Huazi.)
