This condition occurs in cases of *Shanghan* (Cold Damage) where purgation was neglected. In postpartum women, it may arise from deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach, consumption of hot-natured foods leading to a struggle between cold and heat pathogens, or condensation of Cold in the interior. For Cold patterns, Dingxiang (Clove) and Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) are used; for Heat patterns, Jupi Zhuru Tang (Tangerine Peel and Bamboo Shavings Decoction) with Shidi (Persimmon Calyx) is the primary prescription, or moxibustion on Qimen (LR14) acupoint will stop it spontaneously.

General body pain results from the opening of all joints during childbirth, leaving blood vessels empty and unable to nourish sinews and bones. Additionally, retained blood (stasis) may flow into the meridians due to deficiency, causing pain. Generally, pain that worsens upon pressure indicates either Wind-Cold or blood stasis. If there is no pain upon pressure but a preference for warmth, it is a Deficiency-Cold pattern. If caused by insufficient blood circulation, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) combined with Heijiang (Scorched Zingiberis Rhizoma), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Honghua (Carthami Flos), and Zelan (Lycopus Herba) is used to tonify while promoting circulation. If there is a preference for pressure and aversion to cold, Siwu Tang combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Heijiang is used to restore peace through nourishment. If external Wind-Cold is contracted, manifesting as aversion to cold, fever, headache, and body pain, or nasal congestion and hot breath, this is an external contraction. Guyai San (Ancient Bai Powder) combined with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Heijiang, and Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) is used to warm and disperse. If pain persists after dispersing, it is due to Qi and Blood deficiency failing to harmonize Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) levels; Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) is used to tonify. This represents the general principle of tonifying after dispersing.
Guyai San (Ancient Bai Powder)
Jiejie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), roasted until black and ground into powder. Take 1-2 qian mixed with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) decoction, adjusted according to the patient's deficiency or excess. Adding Danggui to this formula creates Qinghun San (Clear Soul Powder), which is more stable. This formula treats postpartum Wind invasion causing sinew tension, spasms, trismus, coma, headache, body pain, and chills with fever. If truly Wind, one to two doses will cure it. Since postpartum women are already deficient, why use heavy exterior-releasing herbs like Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix)? It is like a leaky boat carrying a heavy load; how could it not sink?

Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) (See previous section).
Postpartum women invariably injure the Kidney; thus, lower back pain is always due to Kidney deficiency. Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) combined with Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), and Rougui is indicated, or eating pig kidneys can be used for supplementation. For insufficiency of Qi within the Kidney, Bazhen Tang combined with Duzhong, Xuduan, and Rougui is used for major tonification. If Wind-Cold invades the lower part of the body, connecting upwards to the spine and downwards to the legs and knees, Duhuo Jisheng Tang (Angelica Pubescens and Taxillus Decoction) is used, possibly with added Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) to warm and disperse. However, it should only be taken for one to two doses and not excessively. Once pain subsides slightly, revert to the previous formulas for tonification. I formulated Qingyao Tang (Clear Waist Decoction), which is quite appropriate.
