The "non-responsive" pulse refers to a deep and fine pulse. It may be extremely deep and extremely fine, almost imperceptible; however, it becomes palpable when the patient's hand is turned over for examination. Whenever such a non-responsive pulse is encountered, it indicates that the annual climate cycle is harmonious, known as the "Pulse of Heavenly Harmony," and no treatment is required. Erroneous treatment would instead damage this Heavenly Harmony.
The Earth phase belongs to Southern Governance. This is because Earth resides in the center and issues commands facing south. The Metal, Wood, Water, and Fire phases all serve it as ministers, receiving commands facing north, thus they are referred to as Northern Governance.
The years of Jia and Ji belong to Earth phase with Southern Governance. (In years of Southern Governance, commands are issued facing south, so the Qi is in the South; therefore, South is superior and North is inferior, making the Cun position superior and the Chi position inferior. The Si Tian [Heavenly Sovereign] Qi is above, and the Zai Quan [Earthly Ruler] Qi is below. Human Qi responds accordingly, with the left and right sides being identical. The term "pulse has non-responsiveness" means that where Yin Qi resides, the pulse becomes deep and fine, failing to reflect its normal character. By "Yin Qi," we refer to the Six Qi having three Yin and three Yang phases. Among the positions of the three Yin phases, Shao Yin [Lesser Yin] occupies the center, Tai Yin [Greater Yin] is on the left, and Jue Yin [Terminal Yin] is on the right. The concept of pulse non-responsiveness is discussed regarding the position occupied by Shao Yin among the three Yin phases, further divided into Southern and Northern Governance to determine superiority and inferiority. If Shao Yin is Si Tian, both Cun positions are non-responsive. If Jue Yin is Si Tian, the right Cun position is non-responsive. If Tai Yin is Si Tian, the left Cun position is non-responsive. If Shao Yin is Zai Quan, both Chi positions are non-responsive. If Jue Yin is Zai Quan, the right Chi position is non-responsive. If Tai Yin is Zai Quan, the left Chi position is non-responsive.)
The eight years of Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui all belong to Northern Governance. (In years of Northern Governance, commands are received facing north, so the Qi is in the North; therefore, North is superior and South is inferior. The Zai Quan Qi corresponds to the upper part, and the Si Tian Qi corresponds to the lower part. Human Qi also responds accordingly, so the Chi position corresponds to the lower part and the Cun position to the upper part. If Shao Yin is Si Tian, both Chi positions are non-responsive. If Jue Yin is Si Tian, the right Chi position is non-responsive. If Tai Yin is Si Tian, the left Chi position is non-responsive. If Shao Yin is Zai Quan, both Cun positions are non-responsive. If Jue Yin is Zai Quan, the right Cun position is non-responsive. If Tai Yin is Zai Quan, the left Cun position is non-responsive. If the Chi position should be non-responsive but is instead floating and large, or if the Cun position should be floating and large but is instead deep and fine; or if the Cun position should be non-responsive but is instead floating and large, or if the Chi position should be floating and large but is instead deep and fine, this is termed "Reversal of Cun and Chi." The Classic states: "Death occurs with Reversal of Cun and Chi." If the right side should be non-responsive but is instead floating and large, or if the left side should be floating and large but is instead deep and fine; or if the left side should be non-responsive but is instead floating and large, or if the right side should be floating and large but is instead deep and fine, this is termed "Crossing of Left and Right." The Classic states: "Death occurs with Crossing of Left and Right.")
