Epilepsy is a disease of children. Those over ten years old are referred to as Dian (epileptic psychosis), and those under ten years old are referred to as Xian (infantile epilepsy). The manifestations during an attack include, for example, deviation of the mouth and eyes with upward rolling of the eyeballs, spasmodic jerking of the hands and feet, rigidity of the back and spine, or retrocollis (opisthotonos). Although various medical texts use different names and describe different syndromes for epilepsy, the general source of its onset can be attributed to three categories. These three are: Feng Xian (Wind Epilepsy), Jing Xian (Fright Epilepsy), and Shi Xian (Food Epilepsy). Feng Xian arises when heavy clothing causes sweating and wind pathogen invades; Jing Xian occurs following fright, terror, and loud crying; Shi Xian results from irregular breastfeeding or feeding habits. However, children have weak Qi and Blood and are easily injured by external factors; thus, these three causes transform into various forms of epilepsy.
When any form of epilepsy is actively attacking, with spasmodic contraction of the hands and feet, one must strictly avoid forcibly holding or pulling them, as this will cause joint stiffness and impaired mobility.
Generally, the symptoms of an epileptic attack—such as deviation of the mouth and eyes, upward rolling of the eyeballs, spasmodic jerking of the limbs, rigidity of the back and spine, retrocollis, or finger movements resembling counting—are all caused by exposing the child to wind for cooling and irregular feeding practices. Cases where swelling and fullness appear on the body, head, and face after the remission of epilepsy belong to Feng Xian. Feng Xian is contracted when a child, having sweated in heavy clothing, is exposed to wind while seeking coolness. The initial manifestation involves fingers moving as if counting, followed by spasmodic jerking. Although the epilepsy has subsided, the Qi and Blood remain deficient, and residual heat has not fully cleared. The pathogenic factor contends with healthy Qi in the skin, preventing the free dissemination of Qi, leading to stagnation and resulting in swelling.
Generally, the symptoms of an epileptic attack—including deviation of the mouth and eyes, upward rolling of the eyeballs, convulsive twitching (Chi Zong), rigidity of the back and spine, or retrocollis—are all caused by exposing the child to wind for cooling and irregular feeding practices. Cases where the child cannot speak after the remission of an epileptic attack also belong to Feng Xian. Feng Xian is contracted when a child, having sweated in heavy clothing, is excessively exposed to wind while cooling down, thereby injuring the Wind pathogen. The initial manifestation involves fingers moving as if counting, followed by convulsive twitching. The sound produced by the Heart is speech, and the Heart opens into the mouth. Although the epileptic attack has ceased, Wind-Cold Qi remains stagnant in the collateral vessels of the Heart, causing Disharmony of Heart Qi, which prevents the emission of voice; therefore...
