Infantile hiccups are caused by cold milk during breastfeeding; the cold qi enters the stomach, conflicts with the stomach qi, and the cold restricts the smooth flow of stomach qi, resulting in hiccups.
Infantile hematemesis occurs when internal heat is excessive while blood is deficient. Heat invades the blood; since blood becomes fluid and scatters when heated, it flows recklessly. When qi rebels upward, blood follows qi to the upper body and is vomited out.
Whenever a newborn is delivered, the midwife should immediately wipe the infant's mouth upon seeing the baby emerge, preventing foul blood from entering the infant's mouth. This ensures harmony within the abdomen and prevents disease. If wiping is delayed, foul blood and impure lochia enter the pharynx and are swallowed into the abdomen, causing epigastric and abdominal fullness, shortness of breath, and an inability to suckle milk; this condition is called "Nanru" (Difficult Suckling). It is also said that if the mother excessively exposed herself to cold during pregnancy, cold qi entered the uterus, causing the fetus to become cold. After birth, the infant suffers from abdominal pain and refuses to suckle; this is known as "Taihan" (Fetal Cold), which is also termed "Nanru".
Infantile vomiting is caused by improper temperature regulation of breast milk or supplementary foods. Improper feeding leads to stagnation and accumulation in the chest and diaphragm. Subsequent feeding causes interaction between old and new milk, obstructing the free flow of qi, thus leading to vomiting. If the pulse is floating, there is no serious concern.
The myriad diseases of infants arise from improper care, exposure to extreme cold or heat, irregular feeding times, and alternating states of hunger and overeating. These factors disrupt the regulation of blood and qi and impair gastrointestinal function, potentially leading to convulsions and epilepsy or latent heat. Because infants have fragile blood and qi, their conditions change easily, presenting diverse symptoms; hence they are referred to as "Bai Bing" (Hundred Diseases). If mild symptoms are treated promptly, the development of multiple diseases can be prevented; if treatment is delayed, the disease will progress.
In all diseases, when the condition becomes critical, sweat resembling pearls that adheres to the body without flowing indicates death. Symptoms such as sunken chest, dry lips, eyes rolling upward, cold breath exhaled from the mouth, lying supine with feet touching the head, inability to move limbs, hanging limbs, rigid posture as if bound, and cold palms indicate death within ten days.
Infants whose blood and qi are not yet solid have loose skin and interstices (Cou Li). If dressed too warmly or bedded too hotly, internal heat generates in the viscera, evaporating through the interstices, causing fluids to leak and escape, thereby leading to sweating on the head...
Night sweats refer to spontaneous sweating during sleep. Infants have tender and weak yin and yang qi, making their interstices prone to opening. If cared for with excessive warmth, during sleep when yin and yang qi interact, fluids are released, resulting in spontaneous sweating.
