Wind-heat disease occurs when wind-heat pathogens enter the Lung (Zang organ governing Qi and respiration) first via the skin and hair pores. The Lung serves as the canopy of the five Zang organs and corresponds externally to the body's skin and hair pores. If the skin and interstices are deficient, wind-heat pathogens first damage the skin and hair pores, then penetrate into the Lung. Its manifestations include aversion to wind and cold with shivering, a sensation that the eyes are protruding, and increased nasal discharge and saliva. Upon observation, if within three to five days the eyes appear dim and unclear, this is the condition. By the seventh or eighth day, if slightly yellowish-green purulent nasal discharge resembling a bullet in size is expelled from the mouth and nose, it indicates a favorable prognosis. If not expelled, it will damage the Lung, transforming into coughing with expectoration of pus and blood.
Wind-Qi disease arises from Qi deficiency allowing Wind invasion. The Lung governs Qi; Qi circulates through the meridians and nourishes the Zang and Fu organs. When Qi is deficient, one becomes susceptible to Wind. Wind injuring Qi can be either cold or hot: cold causes cold limbs and reversal, while heat causes mental restlessness and oppression. Since it is caused by Wind, it is named "Wind-Qi." Treatments involving decoctions, moxibustion/ironing therapy, acupuncture, and stone needles have separate specific formulas. Nourishing and guiding exercises are attached hereafter.
The *Yangsheng Fang · Daoyin Fa* states: Extend one hand forward forcefully, grasp the breast area with the other hand, and pull backward forcefully without overexertion. Open the heart/mind and let Qi scatter downward. Alternate hands, performing 21 repetitions (3 x 7). Then, grasp the knees firmly, extend the body backward to the maximum extent, performing 21 repetitions. This removes wrist stiffness and pain, dispersing Qi at Fengfu (GV16) and Yunmen (LU2).
Loss of voice due to wind-cold results from wind-cold pathogens lodging in the epiglottis and damaging the uvula. Voice production depends on the opening and closing of these structures. The epiglottis is the door of sound, and the uvula is the gate. Wind-cold lodging between these gates obstructs airflow, causing loss of voice.
Hoarseness due to internal cold results from wind-cold damaging the Lung. The Lung governs Qi, and all five Zang organs receive Qi from the Lung. Each Zang corresponds to a vocalization, relying on Qi for transmission. Qi belongs to Yang; if warm, Yang Qi harmonizes and spreads, resulting in clear speech. Wind-cold belongs to Yin; Yin pathogens contend with Yang Qi, disrupting smooth Qi flow in the airways, thus causing hoarseness.
Head-and-face wind occurs when constitutional deficiency allows Wind to invade the Yang meridians. All Yang meridians ascend to the head and face. During physical exertion, Yang Qi dissipates, interstices open, and Wind invades, termed "Shou Feng" (Head Wind). Symptoms include excessive sweating on the head and face, aversion to wind, and severe headache. Additionally, getting wet hair exposed to wind causes Shou Feng. Sleeping with wet hair leads to heavy head and feverish body; subsequent wind exposure causes irritability and oppression.
Pulse diagnosis reveals mutual interference of Yin/Yang and Exterior/Interior at the Cun Kou (radial artery). If Wind remains in the head and fails to heal, it enters the brain, transforming into vertigo/dizziness. Treatments involving decoctions, ironing therapy, acupuncture, and stone needles have separate specific formulas. Nourishing and guiding exercises are attached hereafter.
The *Yangsheng Fang* states: Lying supine after a full meal eventually leads to Qi disorders and head wind.
It also states: Washing hair after a full meal induces head wind.
It also states: In summer, do not sleep with the face exposed to dew. Dew falling on the face thickens facial skin and predisposes to tinea/fungal infections. Another view suggests it causes facial wind.
It also states: After sunset and finishing dinner, avoid alcohol consumption to prevent all-day dry retching. Consuming hot, greasy foods followed by cold vinegar drinks often leads to loss of voice or throat obstruction. Sleeping with hot food as a pillow eventually causes head wind and dry eyes.
The *Yangsheng Fang · Daoyin Fa* states: Push one hand upward against the chin to the limit, stretch the other hand backward forcefully with palms facing outward, reaching maximum extension simultaneously, repeating 4 times (4 x 7). Switch sides similarly. Tilting the chin while tilting the head side-to-side, turning the body twice (2 x 7). This removes Wind from arms/elbows, treats head wind, and aids sleep.
It also states: Loosen hair, sit facing East, hold the "solid grip" gesture and hold breath once, perform left-right guiding movements with raised hands covering ears. Stroke the head five times with hands to unblock meridians. This treats head wind and prevents graying hair.
It also states: Sit upright, straighten the waist, tilt left and right, close eyes, inhale through the nose until maximum capacity, then stop breathing. Repeat for seven breath cycles. This eliminates head wind.
It also states: For headache, inhale through the nose and exhale slowly, repeating thirty times before resting.
It also states: Embrace both knees, squat to the ground, and hold breath eight times. This treats diseases from the chest up to the head, including pain in ears, eyes, nose, and throat.
It also states: To treat headache, lie supine, hold breath until nasal congestion is extreme, then exhale. Stop when sweating occurs.
It also states: Interlace hands behind the head, extend maximally, shake fourteen times (2 x 7), flip palms seven times, and extend the head backward maximally. Tilt the head toward four corners, pulling forcefully, repeating twenty-one times (3 x 7). This removes Wind from the sides of the head, axilla, arms, and elbows.
