Postpartum, both Qi and Blood are deficient. If Wind-Cold invades and strikes against the Qi and Blood, following the movement of Qi, it rushes upward to attack the Heart or downward to attack the Abdomen, thus causing pain in the Heart and Abdomen.
If the pain persists for a long time without ceasing, it transforms into Hernia-Masses (Hanzha, abdominal masses characterized by pain and distension).
After childbirth, the Zang organs are deficient. If Wind-Cold invades and contends with the Qi and Blood, causing Qi rebellion, attacking upward along the collaterals of the Heart results in Heart Pain.
Generally, Heart Pain that fluctuates in intensity—sometimes mild, sometimes severe—is due to the collateral branches of the Heart being injured by pathogenic factors.
If the pathogen directly injures the main meridians of the Heart, it is called True Heart Pain (Zhenxintong), where onset in the morning leads to death in the evening, and onset in the evening leads to death in the morning.
The reason for this is that the Heart is the master of all Zang organs and does not normally accept pathogens; if the Heart is directly injured by pathogens, death ensues.
The above situation arises because during childbirth, lochia discharge is scanty, leaving residual blood within the uterine collaterals. This residual blood contends with Qi, causing pain in the lower abdomen.
If cold is encountered again, the blood coagulates, forming Blood Masses (Xuejia), and also leads to irregular menstruation.
The Kidneys govern the waist and legs, and in women, the Uterus is connected to the Kidneys.
Childbirth involves labor and injury, damaging and disturbing Kidney Qi, rendering the uterine collaterals deficient.
Before recovery is complete, if Wind-Cold invades, and Cold Qi attacks the waist, it causes Waist Pain.
If Cold-Pathogenic factors linger and stagnate in the lumbar spine, the pain persists for a long time.
Subsequent pregnancies are prone to miscarriage. The reason is that the Uterus is linked to the Kidneys, and the Kidneys govern the lumbar spine.
The Bladder may have pre-existing retained water. Due to scanty lochia after childbirth, Blood fails to circulate and dissipate. Water and Blood become obstructed and stagnant, contending with Qi and accumulating in the Bladder.
Thus, both the hypochondrium and abdomen feel full. When Qi moves and strikes against the Water and Blood, pain occurs.
Therefore, it causes fullness and pain in both hypochondria and abdomen, leads to irregular menstruation, and can form Blood Masses.
This condition results from severe labor injury during childbirth, leading to extreme deficiency of Qi and Blood. Consequently, the body cannot return to a state of balance, and rebellious Qi attacks the Heart, causing mental restlessness (Xinfan);
due to insufficient Qi, there is shortness of breath (Duanqi).
The Lungs govern Qi, and all Zang and Fu organs derive their Qi from the Lungs.
Childbirth injures both Qi and Blood and damages all Zang and Fu organs.
Thereafter, if Lung Qi has not recovered and becomes exhausted with Qi rebelling upward, it causes Upper Qi (Shangqi, i.e., asthma or rebellious Qi).
The Lungs govern Qi, and the Heart governs Blood vessels. Qi and Blood circulate through the meridians to nourish the Zang and Fu organs.
Childbirth injures Qi and Blood, resulting in insufficiency of the Zang and Fu organs.
Since the Heart commands all other Zang organs, its injury and insufficiency lead to fright, palpitations, and mental confusion, which indicates Deficiency of Heart Qi.
