The Heart corresponds to the image of Fire and is prosperous in Summer. Its pulse is like a hook and is large and surging (Hong). Its external manifestation reflects on the tongue, its sound is speech, its odor is scorched, its taste is bitter, its fluid is sweat, it nourishes Blood (Xue), its color is red, and it stores the Spirit (Shen); the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian (Hand-Shaoyin Xin Jing) is its associated channel. It combines with the Small Intestine; the Small Intestine, as a Fu organ, governs the exterior, while the Heart, as a Zang organ, governs the interior.
When Heart Qi is excessive, leading to an excess of Shen, symptoms include pain inside the chest, distension and fullness in the hypochondrium, pain under the hypochondrium, pain between the chest, back, and scapulae, pain in the inner aspect of both arms, and incessant laughter. This is an Excess syndrome of Heart Qi, and treatment should employ the draining method. When Heart Qi is deficient, symptoms include distension and enlargement of the chest and abdomen, pulling pain between the hypochondrium and the lower back, palpitations, mental confusion and vagueness, lackluster complexion, stiffness of the root of the tongue, and frequent sorrow and grief. This is a Deficiency syndrome of Heart Qi, and treatment should employ the tonifying method.
Regarding the four seasons: If the disease is in the Heart, it heals in Late Summer; if it does not heal in Late Summer, it worsens in Winter; if it does not cause death in Winter, it awaits recovery in Spring; and it arises in Summer. Regarding the Heavenly Stems: It heals on Wu-Ji days; if it does not heal on Wu-Ji days, it aggravates on Ren-Gui days; if it does not cause death on Ren-Gui days, it awaits recovery on Jia-Yi days; and it arises on Bing-Ding days. Regarding the time of day: The patient feels clear-headed at noon, the condition worsens at midnight, and is calm at dawn. One should avoid wearing warm clothes and eating hot food.
The diagnostic area for the Heart is located at the Cun Kou pulse position on the left hand. A normal Heart pulse comes continuously like linked pearls, similar to feeling fine jade (Langyu), which is called a balanced Heart pulse. In Summer, the Stomach Qi serves as the foundation. In Summer, when Heart Fire is dominant, the pulse is floating, large, surging, and dispersed, which is called a Normal Pulse. If instead a deep, soft, and slippery pulse is obtained, it indicates Kidney Water overacting on Heart Fire (Water overcoming Fire), which is a major reversal, ten out of ten cases are fatal and untreatable; if instead a string-like and long pulse is obtained, it indicates Liver Wood overacting on Heart Fire (Mother returning to Son), although sick, it will likely heal; if instead a large and moderate pulse is obtained, it indicates Spleen Earth overacting on Heart Fire (Son supporting Mother), although sick, it will likely heal; if instead a faint, choppy, and short pulse is obtained, it indicates Lung Metal overacting on Heart Fire (Metal suppressing Fire), which is a minor pathogen, although sick, it will not cause death. In Heart disease, the pulse comes rapid and connected, slightly curved within, indicating Heart disease; in dying Heart conditions, the pulse comes with anterior curvature and posterior rigidity, like handling a belt hook, indicating death of the Heart; when the True Heart pulse arrives, it is hard and beating, like feeling the clustered grains of Coix Seed (Yiyiren). If the complexion is dark red or black without luster, and hair breaks off, death ensues. For treatments involving decoctions, moxibustion/warming, acupuncture, and stone therapy, there are separate specific formulas; methods of tonification, nourishment, and guidance are attached hereafter.
The *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Health Preservation) states: The three months of Summer are called the flourishing growth of weeds. Heaven and Earth qi intersect, and all things flourish and bear fruit. Go to bed late and rise early, do not dislike the sun. Keep the mind free from anger, allow the essence to become beautiful and mature, allow the Qi to be vented, as if one's love were directed outward. This is responding to the Qi of Summer, the way to nurture growth. Violating this injures the Heart, leading to Malaria (Nüe) in Autumn.
The *Yangsheng Fang · Daoyin Fa* (Guiding and Pulling Methods) states: Patients with Heart disease experience cold and heat in the body. If cold, exhale air out; if heat, blow air out.
It also states: Lie on the left side, inhale through the mouth, extend the arm and straighten the legs, and exhale through the nose. Repeat this cycle continuously to relieve discomfort below the heart.
