The Lung governs Qi, and its condition is reflected in the skin and hair (mao pi). If Lung Qi is deficient, the interstices (cou li) are susceptible to Cold invasion. When Cold lodges in the meridians, blood circulation becomes obstructed and sluggish; if Heat takes advantage of this deficiency, it condenses to form an abscess (yong).
When Lung Qi is deficient and cold, Cold re-invades the Lung. The Lung, affected by Cold, gives rise to coughing; thus, an abscess may erupt accompanied by cough.
This condition arises because Cold lodges in the meridians, impeding the flow of Qi and Blood, causing stagnation and knotting that forms a swelling or abscess. If an abscess erupts accompanied by diarrhea, it is due to internal Heat prompting excessive drinking, particularly of cold substances. This cold enters the intestines and stomach, causing lower purging (xia li). If the diarrhea persists, it transforms into vomiting or hiccups. This occurs because the Spleen and Stomach are exterior-interiorly related and both correspond to Earth in the Five Phases; the Spleen governs the muscles of the body, while the Stomach is the Sea of Water and Grain. If Spleen Qi is deficient, the muscles are vulnerable to pathogenic factors; if Stomach Qi is deficient, it leads to diarrhea. Persistent diarrhea then transforms into vomiting or hiccups.
This condition arises because Cold lodges in the meridians and contends with Blood, causing Blood to become sluggish and obstructed, leading to stagnation and the formation of an abscess. Internal organ Heat fails to dissipate, and Heat enters the Large Intestine and Small Intestine, resulting in abnormalities in urination and defecation.
This condition arises because constitutional deficiency allows Cold invasion, with Cold lodging in the meridians, causing blood vessels to become obstructed and sluggish. Heat accumulates within, condensing to form an abscess. If the condensed Heat does not disperse, it presses inward upon the Heart, causing Heart Qi deficiency and internal Heat, which leads to palpitations and restlessness.
This condition arises because Cold lodges in the meridians, causing Blood to become sluggish and obstructed, contending with Cold to form a swelling or abscess. Heat takes advantage of this, transforming Blood into pus. After the pus ruptures, the heat-induced swelling disperses, but residual Cold remains, and the muscles fail to regenerate. Consequently, foul-smelling discharge flows continuously, clear in texture and yellow in color.
This condition arises because Cold lodges in the meridians, causing Blood to become sluggish and obstructed, leading to stagnation and the formation of an abscess. After any abscess or pus has ruptured, one must administer drugs that promote pus drainage to ensure all heat-toxic pus and blood are completely dispersed. If there is necrotic flesh, medicaments should be applied to dissolve it, allowing healthy tissue to grow and True Qi to recover. If pus and blood are not fully discharged, remaining toxins persist, and the wound closes prematurely. Although it may appear healed initially, it will ultimately recur later.
This condition arises because Cold lodges in the meridians, causing Blood to become sluggish and obstructed, leading to stagnation and the formation of an abscess. After the abscess erupts, if heat-toxins are not fully cleared, Wind-Cold may invade again. Cold contends with the swelling, causing stagnation that fails to resolve. Thus, the condition persists for a long time, alternating between remission and exacerbation, and over time may transform into a fistula (lou).
