After abortion, the Ying (Nutrient) Qi and Wei (Defensive) Qi are damaged, the Couli (pores and interstices of the skin) become deficient and loose, and the body has not yet recovered. If one rises too early to face the wind and seek coolness, Wind pathogen will invade. Initially, it only manifests as emaciation and weakness, or reduced food intake, with strength not immediately recovering. If Wind carries Cold into the abdomen and clashes with Blood, forming stabbing pain. If it enters the Stomach and Intestines, it also causes dysentery. If it enters the meridians, it may cause Bi syndrome (obstruction causing numbness or pain) or pain. If it enters the Taiyang Meridian (Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian), it results in stiffness and straightening of the waist and back developing into Jing disease (spasm characterized by neck/back rigidity and limb convulsions), or opisthotonos (body bent backward like a bow), or facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eye), or flaccid weakness and inability to move voluntarily, or spasms and tightness on one side. Diseases form according to the site injured by the pathogen.
This refers to pregnant women who are emaciated or complicated by diseases; since they cannot nourish the fetus and simultaneously harm the mother, termination is indicated.
Humans exist between Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, inheriting the Qi of the Five Elements. Yang exerts its influence and Yin transforms it, thus allowing conception. Although the Five Elements generate each other, they also restrain and kill each other through mutual conflict. At the time of delivery, there are taboos such as "Ri You" (Daily Traveling Deity) and "Fan Zhi" (Reverse Branch). If these are violated, various illnesses may arise. Therefore, when sitting or lying during labor, one must conform to the Qi of the Four Seasons and Five Elements; this is called the Method of Delivery.
The term "Fang Yun" (Preventing Yun) refers to: if parturients violate taboos like Ri You and Fan Zhi during labor, it causes disharmony of Qi and Blood, leading to Yun syndrome. The manifestation of Yun is mental restlessness and oppression, with breath nearly failing; thus, magical methods must be used in advance to prevent it.
When a child is born but suffers from the failure of the placenta (Baoyi) to expel, it is commonly called Xi Bao (Stagnant Placenta). This occurs because the mother exerted herself heavily at the beginning of labor; by the time the child is out, her body is exhausted and she cannot use Qi to push down from the chest/abdomen again. During this pause, external Cold attacks, causing blood vessels to become obstructed and sluggish, hence the placenta remains for a long time. It is urgent to treat with herbal formulas; otherwise, it harms the infant. The reason is that the placental cord connects to the infant's umbilical cord. If the placenta does not come out, the umbilical cord cannot be cut and the infant bathed in time. Cold Qi injuring the infant leads to illness. Old prescriptions for prolonged retention of the placenta fearing injury to the infant dictate cutting the umbilical cord according to method and tying one end of the cord with an object. Also, if attendants are careless during delivery and pull too forcefully, breaking the placental cord, if the placenta moves up to cover the Heart, it causes death. Even if not fatal, it becomes a disease over time.
