It is commonly said that Qian Keng ruined his Daoist practice and shortened his lifespan due to licentiousness. Even the Immortal Lü (Lü Dongbin) was ensnared by the practices of sexual supplementation, suffering in the mortal world. Nowadays, many high-ranking officials and nobles, in their old age, are deluded by alchemists and quacks, practicing sexual arts with women, resulting in numerous deaths from such excesses. Laozi stated: "The art of the bedroom can give life, but it can also take life." I fear that those who become infatuated with sexual pleasures rarely preserve their health. Once encountering young and beautiful women, who can remain unmoved? Many even sacrifice their lives for lust, which is extremely foolish.
Xianmao (Rhizoma Curculiginis) is merely a medicinal herb. The *Bencao* (Materia Medica) highly praises its ability to strengthen yang and benefit the kidneys. Zhang Bi from Donghai satirized it, saying: "You took it away yesterday; today people come to ask for your epitaph." Danxi also discussed the errors of avoiding abstinence and using sexual acts for tonification. During the Wanli era, Gong Yingyuan, a renowned physician from Jiangxi, wrote the *Fushou Danshu* (Book of Fortune and Longevity), teaching methods of sexual coition and supplementation. He detailed prescriptions and theories, promoting lust and virtue-destroying practices, cutting short human longevity. He is truly a sinner against the Yellow Emperor and Qi Bo's medical tradition. Recently, there are unscrupulous individuals who use medicine as a means of livelihood. They do not understand classic texts nor are they proficient in pulse diagnosis and formulas. Instead, they specialize in secret, toxic pills from heterodox schools. They flatter the powerful, deviating from the right path to gain favor, using this as capital for status and fame. Little do they know that these drugs are either harsh mineral substances or toxic aromatic herbs that burn the intestines and stomach, exhausting the essence. Medicine is originally intended to save lives, yet they kill. Thus, they are called "licentious physicians."
Moreover, there are those of bad character who, when examining women, develop illicit desires, provoke sexual thoughts, and transmit affection through subtle means, facilitating wickedness to an extreme degree. Therefore, Sun Simiao said: "Let the heart be cautious yet bold, let talent be round (flexible) yet conduct be square (principled)." Situations like walking through a melon patch or picking plums (implying potential suspicion) should be avoided by gentlemen. Maintaining a bright and upright mind is the fundamental duty of a physician.
It is said: "Better to treat ten men than one woman," which is indeed difficult. There are foolish men in the world who entrust the lives of their wives' female relatives to midwives or female healers. Many have been harmed and killed by their reckless treatments. If male physicians can still make mediocre mistakes, how much more so for women who are illiterate and cannot distinguish pulses? Relying only on gossip to please women, hiding knives behind three fingers (a metaphor for hidden harm), and accepting silent slaughter, this is worthy of caution. Although these wild and unruly women may have some skills, what they rely on most are abortifacient drugs, which they claim are most effective. Thus, they often encounter married women who have lost their chastity, believing their seduction and engaging in ambiguous, secretive acts without restraint. Hence, ancestors wrote in the *Family Instructions for Healing*: "Do not let the six types of women (matchmakers, procuresses, fortune-tellers, brothel keepers, herbalists, and midwives) enter the door." Reflect on this.
