There are cases where urine flows out as white turbidity, resembling rice-washing water or water leaking from a roof. It may be painful like being cut by a knife or astringent like needle pricks, with short and scanty urination, and urgency after defecation. This is caused by the obstruction of fire in the Bladder (Bladder organ). This condition mostly arises from sexual intercourse where ejaculation is not allowed to proceed freely but is forcibly suppressed. When semen is discharged, it must ascend from the Kidneys (Kidney organs) along the Jiaji points, penetrate through the Nidan palace, and descend through the throat; the marrow of all bones simultaneously converges downward to the genitalia for exit. If slightly suppressed, the semen stops midway and cannot disperse. Since it cannot return to its original state throughout the body, it is forced to take the path of the Bladder, attempting to discharge with urine. The Bladder transforms water but not semen, and since it has an exterior-interior relationship with the Kidneys, it is unwilling to leak the essence from the Kidneys outward, thus closing its opening so that essence cannot exit. Because essence blocks the outside, the Bladder dares not transform water, leading to water stagnation. Water stagnation causes fire to blaze, boiling dry the fluids, changing the color of essence into turbidity. It then moistens the Bladder, but the Bladder still rejects it, causing it to flow spontaneously out of the genitalia. The treatment method is to drain the fire of the Bladder, assisted by diuretic herbs, so that fire dissipates with the flowing water, and essence also disperses with the fire.
Prescription: Sanjing Tang (Scatter Essence Decoction):
* *Liuji Nu* (Viscum Coloratum Herba, 1 liang)
* *Cheqianzi* (Plantaginis Semen, 5 qian)
* *Huangbai* (Phellodendri Cortex, 5 fen)
* *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang)
Decoct in water and take orally. One dose results in cure.
This prescription uses *Baizhu* to benefit the Qi of the waist and umbilicus, *Cheqianzi* to promote urination, *Huangbai* to drain the fire of the Bladder, and *Liuji Nu* to separate clear from turbid. This herb acts swiftly without risk of stagnation, taking advantage of its rapid ability to drive out water and stop bleeding, ensuring no delay.
For this condition, Guiche Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Plantago Decoction) is also effective.
* *Cheqianzi* (Plantaginis Semen, 1 liang)
* *Rougui* (Cinnamomi Cortex, 3 fen)
* *Zhimu* (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1 qian)
* *Wangbuliuxing* (Vaccariae Semen, 2 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally. One dose ensures patency.
There are cases where urine flows out as red turbidity, resembling blood but not blood, resembling urine but not urine, accompanied by urethral pain. People assume it is Blood Lin (Blood strangury), but who would know it is due to Qi deficiency and blood stasis? When Qi is vigorous, blood flows; when Qi is weak, blood obstructs. However, people with Qi deficiency often cannot endure ejaculation and tremble. If they cannot endure but force themselves to suppress, essence blocks the urinary aperture. Weak Qi cannot push it out, leading to accumulation and internal corruption, transforming into pus and blood. Essence transforms into blood, which has nowhere to go, and still flows into the Bladder. The Bladder cannot transform blood, allowing it to flow freely. The blood transformed from essence retains ministerial fire, and the nature of fire causes mischief, resulting in pain. Although essence transforms into blood, essence is limited in quantity, so blood should also be scarce. Why does it flow all day without stopping? One must realize that essence and blood are of the same category. Once essence transforms into blood, blood attracts more essence, leaving no end. The treatment method urgently prioritizes stopping bleeding, but one cannot merely stop bleeding. Stopping bleeding requires tonifying Qi, because Qi can transform blood.
Prescription: Duexue Tang (Stop Bleeding Decoction):
* *Huangqi* (Astragali Radix, 1 liang)
* *Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 qian)
* *Sanqi Gen Mo* (Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma Powder, 3 qian)
* *Fuling* (Poria, 3 qian)
* *Danpi* (Moutan Cortex, 3 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally. One dose stops hematuria; two doses result in full recovery.
This prescription uses *Huangqi* to tonify Qi and *Danggui* to nourish Blood. With vigorous Qi, pushing out corrupt turbidity is easy. Moreover, the transformed essence-blood has already exited externally; what flows is old blood, not corrupt blood. Now, using herbs to tonify Qi and Blood generates new blood. Once new blood is generated, old blood naturally stops. Furthermore, *Sanqi Gen* is good at stopping bleeding. In the formula, *Danpi* clears fire in the blood, and *Fuling* separates blood in the water, ensuring clear and turbid do not mix, and obstruction is unblocked. People of the world do not know the method for treating Blood Lin and use damp-heat clearing methods, often leading to exhaustion.
For this condition, Xuanche Dan (Scrophularia and Plantago Pill) is also very effective.
* *Xuanshen* (Scrophulariae Radix)
* *Cheqianzi* (Plantaginis Semen)
(Each 1 liang)
Decoct in water and take orally. Two doses result in cure.
There are cases where sand and stones appear in urine. Their colors vary, but they are hard as stones and do not dissolve quickly even in hot water. When attempting to urinate, the pain is unbearable, requiring great effort to expel urine before relief. This condition mostly arises from sexual intercourse followed by walking in water or bathing. People assume it is Stone Lin (Stone strangury), but who would know it is due to the boiling of Kidney Fire? Excess Kidney Fire stems from deficiency of Kidney Water. After sexual emission depletes water, the fire does not immediately subside. Adding physical labor agitates the muscles and bones, causing fire to surge uncontrollably. Bathing or wading in water seems to control fire with external water, but Kidney Fire is deficient fire. External water enters directly due to the deficiency of Kidney Qi, suppressing the fire. The fire dares not scatter outward and instead closes within the Kidney Palace. Kidney Water is Yin water, like the sea. Sea water becomes salt blocks when heated by fire; Kidney Water becomes stone-like Lin when heated by fire. What is strange about this? External water is fresh, while Kidney Water is salty. Kidney Fire likes salt and fears fresh water. Upon invasion by fresh water, Kidney Fire closes and cannot extend. It moves its Qi to the Bladder, boiling dry the salty water to form stones. The treatment method is to unblock the Qi in the Kidneys and promote urination in the Bladder, so that Kidney Fire resolves and stones dissolve naturally.
Prescription: Huashi Tang (Dissolve Stones Decoction):
* *Shudi* (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 2 liang)
* *Fuling* (Poria, 1 liang)
* *Yiren* (Coicis Semen, 5 qian)
* *Shanzhuyu* (Corni Fructus, 1 liang)
* *Zexie* (Alismatis Rhizoma, 5 qian)
* *Maidong* (Ophiopogonis Radix, 5 qian)
* *Xuanshen* (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 liang)
Decoct in water and take orally. One or two doses reduce symptoms; ten doses result in full recovery.
This prescription does not treat Lin directly but tonifies the Kidneys. *Fuling* and *Yiren*, with their light and penetrating properties, resolve the salty taste; *Maidong* and *Xuanshen*, being slightly cold, dissipate fire. *Shudi* and *Shanzhuyu*, sweet and sour, nourish Yin water. Sweetness dissolves stones, and acidity reduces stones. Worrying that these might be stagnant and not moving, *Zexie* is added for its salty property. Salty enters salty, penetrates hardness, leads the group of herbs into the Kidneys, exits the Kidneys, rapidly drives into the interior of the Bladder, and breaks the blocks. If one does not tonify the Kidneys but only treats the Bladder, and Qi cannot exit, how can water be transformed?
For this condition, Huasha Tang (Dissolve Sand Decoction) is also effective.
* *Shudi* (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 2 liang)
* *Shanzhuyu* (Corni Fructus, 1 liang)
* *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian)
* *Zexie* (Alismatis Rhizoma)
* *Cheqianzi* (Plantaginis Semen)
(Each 3 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally.
There are cases of Lin caused by dampness. Symptoms include heaviness in the lower body, no urethral pain, and the discharge is clear water rather than white turbidity. People assume it is Lin due to Qi deficiency, but who would know it is Lin due to heavy dampness? Among the five types of Lin, this is the mildest yet hardest to cure, because dampness is not confined to the Bladder meridian. Dampness enters from below, affecting the feet. Now, the feet are not swollen but have turned into Lin, meaning dampness has entered the meridians rather than the skin, and from meridians into the Zang-Fu organs. Treating dampness in the Zang-Fu should disperse dampness in the meridians entirely. Why is this Lin hardest to cure? Dampness enters the Zang-Fu by exploiting deficiency. Draining dampness damages Zang-Fu Qi. Damaged Qi cannot move water, so how can dampness be drained? If dampness is hard to drain, how can Lin heal quickly? Therefore, treating dampness must involve promoting Qi movement, and only by promoting Qi can Lin be removed.
Prescription: Yuzhi Tang (Yu the Great’s Treatment Decoction):
* *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang)
* *Fuling* (Poria, 1 liang)
* *Yiren* (Coicis Semen, 1 liang)
* *Cheqianzi* (Plantaginis Semen, 3 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally.
This prescription promotes urination without consuming Qi and separates water without generating fire, far surpassing Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder). Wuling San contains *Zhuling* and *Zexie*, which are too draining, and *Rougui*, which is too hot and steaming. This formula is neither hot nor cold, capable of both tonifying and draining, which is superior. Taking this decoction for about ten doses eliminates all dampness conditions, not just curing Lin quickly.
For this condition, Qihua Tang (Qi Transformation Decoction) can also be used.
* *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang)
* *Fuling* (Poria)
* *Zhuling* (Polyporus)
* *Cheqianzi* (Plantaginis Semen)
(Each 3 qian)
* *Huangqi* (Astragali Radix, 1 liang)
* *Shengma* (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 5 fen)
Decoct in water and take orally.
During spring and summer, exposure to wind and rain or oppressive heat can cause upper heat and lower dampness to steam and depress, leading to Lin. There is no fear or suppression of ejaculation involved. People attribute this to damp-heat, but who would know it is Kidney deficiency contracting damp-heat? Kidney deficiency refers to deficiency of fire in the Kidneys. Cold Kidneys mean insufficient fire to protect the body, allowing external pathogens to enter directly. Fortunately, Kidney Water protects externally, preventing deep invasion, lodging in the outer layer of the Kidney. The Kidney and Bladder are exterior-interior pairs; the exterior of the Kidney is the Bladder. Damp-heat external pathogens enter the Bladder, replacing Kidney Fire Qi to execute transformation commands. However, the Bladder transforms only with Kidney Qi, not with pathogenic Qi. Thus, heat fails to transform water-dampness, and assisting fire prevents normal urination, resulting in Lin. The treatment method urgently expels damp-heat from the Bladder to clear the source of transformation. However, once Bladder damp-heat is cleared, if Kidney Qi remains weak, how can Qi reach the Bladder? Even if Lin heals, I fear complications will arise. Therefore, amidst draining dampness and heat, one must supplement Kidney Qi.
Prescription: Tongshen Quxie San (Unblock Kidney Expel Pathogen Powder):
* *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang)
* *Fuling* (Poria, 5 qian)
* *Qumai* (Polygoni Avicularis Herba, 1 qian)
* *Yiren* (Coicis Semen, 5 qian)
* *Bianxu* (Persicariae Herba, 1 qian)
* *Rougui* (Cinnamomi Cortex, 3 fen)
* *Cheqianzi* (Plantaginis Semen, 3 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally.
This prescription separates damp-heat without damaging Kidney Qi, allowing Kidney Qi to circulate and decompose damp-heat. Lin resolves benefiting the Kidneys, preventing unpredictable changes.
For this condition, Sanlin Tang (Disperse Lin Decoction) is also effective.
* *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang)
* *Duzhong* (Eucommiae Cortex, 1 liang)
* *Fuling* (Poria, 1 liang)
* *Shanyao* (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 3 qian)
* *Yiren* (Coicis Semen, 5 qian)
* *Huangbai* (Phellodendri Cortex, 1 qian)
* *Rougui* (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 fen)
Decoct in water and take orally.
During sexual intercourse, sudden thunder or someone arriving may prevent ejaculation, leading to white turbidity and urethral pain like needle pricks. People assume it is internal corruption of Kidney essence, but who would know it is blockage of Gallbladder Qi? The Gallbladder prefers free flow. Shocked Gallbladder Qi over-contracts, preventing Qi from the Twelve Meridians from escaping outward. Essence is blocked and accumulates between the Bladder and genitalia. Gallbladder Qi is constrained and preoccupied with itself, unable to provide decision-making for the Twelve Meridians. Thus, essence transforms into Lin, obstructed and difficult to exit. The treatment method expresses Gallbladder Qi and adds mild diuretics. Once Gallbladder Qi extends, gaining decisive momentum, water flows and essence transforms naturally.
Prescription: Zhudan Daoshui Tang (Assist Gallbladder Guide Water Decoction):
* *Zhuru* (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia, 3 qian)
* *Zhiqiao* (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 1 qian)
* *Cheqianzi* (Plantaginis Semen, 3 qian)
* *Baishao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian)
* *Cangzhu* (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3 qian)
* *Huashi* (Talcum, 1 qian)
* *Mutong* (Akebiae Caulis, 2 qian)
* *Yiren* (Coicis Semen, 3 qian)
* *Zhuling* (Polyporus, 2 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally. Two doses show slight improvement; four doses result in full recovery.
Although the formula mostly guides water, guiding water involves expressing Gallbladder Qi, so Gallbladder Qi opens and Lin heals.
For this condition, Shundan Tang (Smooth Gallbladder Decoction) is also effective.
* *Chaihu* (Bupleuri Radix)
* *Huangqin* (Scutellariae Radix)
(Each 2 qian)
* *Baishao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba)
* *Cheqianzi* (Plantaginis Semen)
(Each 5 qian)
* *Fushen* (Poria cum Radix et Ramus)
* *Zexie* (Alismatis Rhizoma)
* *Chao Zhizi* (Gardeniae Fructus Stir-fried)
* *Cangzhu* (Atractylodis Rhizoma)
(Each 3 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally. Four doses result in cure.
During dysentery, urinary obstruction and urethral pain may occur, turning into Lin. People assume excessive damp-heat, but who would know it is failure to distinguish clear from turbid? Summer heat contracted, drinking cold water, or overeating tea and melons can cause dysentery, formed by damp-heat. Damp-heat stays in the intestines and stomach, ideally exiting via stool. Now exiting via urine indicates excessive damp-heat. Its trend goes to the Large Intestine, but rushing too fast for the intestine to handle, it diverts to the Bladder. The Bladder receives damp-heat Qi, impairing the Lung Metal’s clear and descending command. Unable to transform urine, it turns into white turbidity and exudes. "Failure to distinguish clear from turbid" specifically refers to the Bladder, not the intestines. Water entering the Bladder relies on its unique permeating and transforming function for separation. Failure to transform due to damp-heat is a Bladder disease. Bladder Qi transformation relies on Qi, which is Fire. Is damp-heat not Fire? Why does receiving Fire turn it into white turbidity? One must know: Cold Bladder causes frequent urination; Hot Bladder causes inability to urinate. White Lin is heat-related but still flows because of mixed dampness. Bladder transforms urine with True Fire, not Evil Fire. True Fire transforms urine easily; Evil Fire scorches urine making it hard to pass. Damp-heat Fire is Evil Fire, not True Fire. The treatment method clears Evil Fire in the Bladder and expels damp-heat from the Large Intestine, stopping dysentery and Lin simultaneously.
Prescription: Wuling San Modified:
* *Fuling* (Poria, 3 qian)
* *Zhuling* (Polyporus, 2 qian)
* *Zexie* (Alismatis Rhizoma, 5 qian)
* *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 fen)
* *Chao Zhizi* (Gardeniae Fructus Stir-fried, 3 qian)
* *Baishao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian)
* *Binglang* (Arecae Semen, 2 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally. Two doses bring slight relief; another two doses bring further relief; three more doses result in full recovery.
This formula has more diuretic herbs than dysentery-treating herbs. Why does dysentery heal first and Lin later? Dysentery is formed by damp-heat; promoting urination resolves damp-heat easily. If water does not go to the Large Intestine but all goes to the Bladder, the Bladder finds it harder to permeate water quickly, hence the delayed effect.
For this condition, Fenzhuo Yin (Separate Turbidity Drink) is also effective.
* *Luobozi* (Brassicae Semens, 1 liang)
* *Baifuling* (Poria)
* *Zexie* (Alismatis Rhizoma)
* *Cheqian* (Plantaginis Semen)
(Each 5 qian)
* *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma)
* *Huangbai* (Phellodendri Cortex)
(Each 1 qian)
* *Chao Zhizi* (Gardeniae Fructus Stir-fried, 3 qian)
Decoct in water and take orally.
