There are cases where red spots first appear on the head, face, and body, followed by gradual skin breakdown, weeping fluid, and formation of sores, leading to the complete loss of eyebrows and beard, with the entire body rotting and emitting an unbearable foul odor. People assume this is Leprosy (Lefe, 癞风), but who would know that it is a disease caused by the condensation of Fire-Toxin (Huodu, 火毒)? Leprosy is very common in the Lingnan region because snakes and insects are prevalent there year-round; Heat-Toxin (Redu, 热毒) Qi wraps around between the skin, while Damp-Steaming (Shizheng, 湿蒸) Qi is concealed and suppressed within the muscles and bones. Thus, internal and external forces press upon each other, causing stagnation and accumulation that cannot be rapidly dispersed, resulting in progression from spots to ulceration, and from ulceration to putrefaction. This is a most severe disease, not only occurring frequently in Lingnan. Indeed, toxic gases exist everywhere, and Damp-Heat (Shire, 湿热) is formed by Heaven and Earth, so it truly cannot be divided by North or South. The treatment method must prioritize detoxification. However, many people nowadays have deficient Yuan-Qi (Yuanqi, 元气). Merely purging the toxin may not fail to damage the Zheng-Qi (Zhengqi, 正气) first. Conversely, tonifying Zheng-Qi might fearfully draw the pathogen inward. Therefore, it is exquisite to scatter the pathogen while tonifying. Use Sanli Tang (Scatter Leprosy Decoction): Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 苍术) 3 qian, Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 熟地黄) 1 liang, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参) 1 liang, Can'erzi (Xanthii Fructus, 苍耳子) 3 qian, Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, 车前子) 2 qian, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 金银花) 2 liang, Yiren (Coicis Semen, 薏苡仁) 5 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. Taking ten doses continuously can result in half recovery. Taking another ten doses will surely lead to full recovery.
This formula tonifies the Kidney and strengthens the Spleen, containing substances that disperse Wind, remove Dampness, and transform toxins. Thus, attacking and tonifying are combined; when Zheng-Qi is robust, the Xie-Qi (Pathogenic Qi, 邪气) retreats. If purely using cold-cooling herbs, or entirely using wind-dispersing herbs, few achieve success.
Using Huangjin Tang (Golden Decoction) for this syndrome is also effective. Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 大黄) 5 qian, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 金银花) 0.5 jin. Decoct in water to obtain three bowls of juice, divide into three doses, and finish within one day. There will inevitably be a massive evacuation of foul feces. Afterwards, use only Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 金银花) 3 liang, taken continuously for ten days for full recovery.
People contracting Leprosy (Lefe, 癞风) do not necessarily live only within Liangyue (Liangguang, 两粤); often those living outside Liangyue also contract it. People attribute this to the entry of Fire-Toxin (Huodu, 火毒), but who knows it is formed by contracting Wine-Damp-Toxin (Jiu Shi Zhi Du, 酒湿之毒)? The steaming aroma of wine is most harmful to humans. Lying on wine lees or sitting beside wine vats can all cause illness, mostly contracted after sexual intercourse. Since sexual intercourse causes ejaculation and opens all hair follicles (Maoqiao, 毛窍), wine Qi easily invades. The symptoms are no different from Leprosy. However, the disease in Liangyue is contagious among family members and between fathers and sons. In contrast, that caused solely by contracting Wine-Toxin affects only the individual, while others remain unharmed. Although the treatment method involves purging Fire-Toxin (Huodu, 火毒), it is best to simultaneously transform Wine-Toxin (Jiu Du, 酒毒). Use Jielishen Dan (Divine Pill for Resolving Leprosy): Fuling (Poria, 茯苓) 3 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白术) 5 qian, Yiren (Coicis Semen, 薏苡仁) 5 qian, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连) 1 qian, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参) 1 liang, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 金银花) 3 liang, Zuomuzhi (Quercus variabilis Branch, 柞木枝) 3 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. Using ten doses continuously can cure those not yet ulcerated; for those already ulcerated, taking another twenty doses leads to recovery.
This formula strengthens the Spleen and removes Dampness, transforms toxins, and resolves wine toxicity without injuring Zheng-Qi (Zhengqi, 正气), allowing Xie-Qi (Pathogenic Qi, 邪气) to retreat easily. If one assumes Leprosy is purely Fire-Toxin (Huodu, 火毒) and uses only detoxifying and fire-purging herbs, ignoring wine-dampness, it is not a skillful treatment method. So, how to distinguish Wine-Damp-Toxin? Disgust arises upon smelling wine, and pain increases when drinking fine wine; this indicates contraction of Wine-Toxin (Jiu Du, 酒毒). Conversely, if saliva flows upon smelling wine, or itching occurs when drinking fine wine, it is not Wine-Toxin (Jiu Du, 酒毒) but Fire-Toxin (Huodu, 火毒). If this Leprosy is formed from Wine-Toxin (Jiu Du, 酒毒), Huangjin Tang (Golden Decoction) can also be used with the addition of 5 qian of Zuomuzhi (Quercus variabilis Branch, 柞木枝), administered as before. Recovery is achieved through evacuation.
