A person experiences eye pain as if pricked, with excessive discharge in the corners of the eyes, photophobia (sensitivity to light) and aversion to sunlight, swelling of both eyelids, and continuous tearing. This is caused by wind-fire disturbing the Liver Wood, while the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach fails to ascend. The postnatal foundation of human life relies primarily on the Spleen and Stomach. Once the Spleen and Stomach are constrained by the Liver Wood, Earth Qi becomes suppressed, body fluids dry up, and consequently, Liver Wood loses nourishment and becomes dry. When Wind attacks it further, the Liver Wood becomes even drier. The eyes are the orifices of the Liver; since the Liver contains nothing but wind-fire Qi, how can the eyes obtain coolness? However, since the Liver Meridian is dry, why do the eyes produce tears? This is because Kidney Qi comes to its rescue. The Liver is the son of the Kidney. When the Liver, the son, is besieged by wind-fire pathogens and faces an urgent crisis, it must seek help from the Kidney, the mother. The Kidney, feeling pity for its son, will necessarily use Water to assist it. However, since the wind-fire has not been eliminated, the assisted Water battles against the wind-fire. The Kidney wishes to nourish the Liver but cannot, and the Liver desires Water but dares not accept it. Thus, the eyes derive no benefit from Water but instead suffer harm from it. Nevertheless, Water is ultimately favored by Wood, while Fire is ultimately feared by Wood. The sun is Yang Fire, and lamp light is Yin Fire; therefore, both are contraindicated. The treatment method should naturally prioritize dispelling wind and extinguishing fire. However, if one treats only wind and fire without employing harmonizing methods, the wind will not easily disperse, nor will the fire easily subside. Use Xifen Decoction: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 3 qian), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix, 2 qian), Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus, 3 qian), Man Jing Zi (Viticis Semen, 1 qian), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos, 3 qian), Cao Jue Ming (Cassiae Semen, 1 qian), Chao Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus Praeparated, 3 qian), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After two doses, the fire subsides; after another two doses, photophobia and aversion to sunlight disappear; after another two doses, all symptoms resolve completely. This formula drains the wind-fire of Liver Wood and effectively regulates the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach, further assisting with herbs that clear nebulae from the eyes, truly achieving appropriate harmonization. For this condition, Chai Jing Yin is also excellent. Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos) (each 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 4 qian), Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus), Cao Jue Ming (Cassiae Semen), Chao Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus Praeparated) (each 2 qian), Mi Meng Hua (Onosmi Flos), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum) (each 5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. Cured in four doses.
A person suffers from chronic eye pain lasting years, with persistent redness, leading to the growth of pterygium (fleshy growth extending onto the cornea) and trichiasis (in-turned eyelashes). This is due to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. Generally, acute eye pain indicates excess pathogenic factors, while chronic eye pain indicates deficiency of healthy Qi. If a deficiency pattern is treated with methods for excess patterns, this condition arises. People fail to realize this and frequently resort to external treatments, unaware that using harsh external remedies before internal diseases are resolved rarely avoids harm. I now specifically transmit a formula for anyone suffering from pterygium or trichiasis; taking it will lead to gradual recovery, though rapid results should not be expected. Since the disease resulted from prior mistreatment, its origin is long-standing; how can medication demand immediate efficacy? The formula is named Moyi Dan: Rui Yu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 1 jin), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos, 1 jin), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 jin), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 jin), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 2 liang), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 3 liang), Tongzhou Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus, 1 jin), Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen, 4 liang), Fu Shen (Poria cum Radice, 0.5 jin). Grind each into powder, form pills with honey. Take five qian with plain boiled water morning and evening. One course cures completely. This formula combines attack with tonification; wind subsides without direct treatment, fire vanishes without direct treatment, pterygium resolves without direct treatment, and in-turned lashes correct themselves without direct removal. Do not view it as ordinary, for wonder lies within the mundane. For this condition, Jiajian Xiaoyao San is also good. Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus), Rui Ren (Buckwheat Seed, 1 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 5 fen), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos, 3 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum) (each 3 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. Cured in three months.
A person experiences tearing upon exposure to wind after eye pain, darkness and blurriness at night, and dryness when exposed to lamp light. This results from loss of Yuan Yang (Original Yang) in youth, compounded by contracting epidemic eye disease and failing to observe sexual abstinence, thereby damaging the essence. Consequently, the tear ducts remain open, allowing wind-cold to penetrate; internal Qi becomes deficient, and external pathogens are difficult to repel, causing tearing. Tears originate from the Heart, and the tear duct is the orifice of the Heart. Injury to the Heart causes tearing; injury to the essence also causes tearing, indicating close internal-external connection, as injuring essence is equivalent to injuring the Heart. To stop tearing from essence damage, one must urgently tonify the Heart. However, tonifying the Heart alone is insufficient; one must treat the Kidney and Liver simultaneously, so that Kidney Water generates Liver Wood, and Liver Wood further tonifies the Heart. Use Gugen Tang: Rui Yu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 5 qian), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos, 3 qian), Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 3 fen), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. After four doses, wind aversion ceases; after another four doses, tearing upon wind exposure stops; after ten more doses, complete recovery occurs. Rui Yu best stops tearing; combined with Dang Gui and Bai Shao to tonify the Liver, Shu Di Huang to nourish the Kidney, and Mai Dong to tonify the Heart, assisted by Gan Ju Hua, Chang Pu, and Chai Hu to soothe wind-fire, and guiding other meridians' herbs to seal the tear ducts, this consolidates the root so branch symptoms resolve spontaneously. For this condition, Yangmu Tang is also effective. Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Rui Yu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 5 qian), Shan Yu (Corni Fructus), Fu Ling (Poria), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Gou Qi (Lycii Fructus) (each 3 qian), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, 2 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 3 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. Cured in ten doses.
After contracting epidemic eye disease, a person’s eyes do not hurt but appear pale red, yet they suffer from photophobia and aversion to sunlight, similar to acute eye pain. This is an internally injured eye condition mistakenly treated as excess fire, exacerbated by careless sexual indulgence. If treated again as wind-fire, blindness may result. One must greatly tonify the Liver and Kidney, making Water abundant to generate Liver Wood, and Wood vigorous to dispel wind, so the eyes receive fluid nourishment and deficient fire dissipates. Use Yangmu Tang: Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 5 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang), Rui Yu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 5 qian), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 4 qian), Bei Wu Wei (Schisandrae Fructus, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos, 2 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. Eyes brighten after two doses; photophobia resolves after another two doses; redness disappears after four more doses, leading to cure. This formula greatly tonifies the Kidney and Liver; by not directly treating the eyes, it effectively treats them. Physicians often rigidly adhere to fixed formulas, ignoring the deficiency or excess of the eyes, focusing solely on clearing fire, unknowingly ruining millions of pairs of eyes. Practitioners should assess deficiency or excess; if deficiency is identified, use this formula, and effects will be immediate, regardless of timing. How to distinguish initial internal injury eye pain? Pain worse during the day indicates Yang Fire (excess); pain worse at night indicates Yin Fire (deficiency). Treat deficiency urgently with this formula for instant results, preventing unpredictable complications. For this condition, Huanguang Yin is also excellent. Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 4 qian), Gou Qi (Lycii Fructus), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Tongzhou Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (each 3 qian), Rui Yu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 5 qian), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 3 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. Cured in ten doses.
A person experiences upward surging of Yin Fire, causing redness and swelling of both eyes, tearing without heat, mild photophobia, lighter pain at sunrise, and heavier pain at sunset. Is this not pain from a deficiency syndrome? However, it originates in the Kidney, not the Liver. With no Fire in the Kidney and severe cold in the Lower Jiao, the remaining Fire is forced upward, floating to the eyes and causing pain. Treatment should not drain Fire but tonify Fire, and not merely tonify Fire but also supplement Water. True Cold in the Kidney means Fire is absent; actually, insufficient Water in the Kidney leaves Fire un-nourished. Water and Fire cannot be separated; supplementing Water requires supplementing Fire so Water is not cold, and supplementing Fire requires supplementing Water so Fire is not dry. Treating deficiency-Yin with hyperactive Fire always requires simultaneous treatment; why treat eye conditions differently? Use Bajia Dihuang Tang modified: Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 5 qian), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) (each 3 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 5 fen), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 qian), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos, 3 qian), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, Yin Fire returns to its source, and eye disease is instantly cured. How miraculous is this treatment! The Way of Yin and Yang returns to the root most quickly. I use Liuwei Dihuang Wan to greatly nourish Kidney Water, adding Rou Gui to warm Mingmen Fire. Fire delights in being nourished by Water, returning together to the original palace. Longlei (Dragon Thunder) calms down, and firelight in the sky disperses naturally, restoring a clear blue world. Assisted by Chai Hu, Bai Shao, and Gan Ju Hua, wind blows through, ventilating the great marsh, making thunder-fire even safer. For this condition, Yihuo San is also effective. Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (each 1 liang), Bei Wu Wei (Schisandrae Fructus), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (each 1 qian), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Officinalis Radix), Rui Yu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) (each 5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Effective after one dose, cured in two doses.
A person can see near but not far; near vision allows distinguishing fine details like fly legs, while far vision beyond a few feet cannot distinguish true from false. People attribute this to insufficient Liver Blood, but it is actually due to weak Kidney Fire. Kidney Fire is congenital Fire, residing within Kidney Water. In myopia, Water is not deficient, so why is Fire exhausted? Congenital Fire is granted by Heaven; if born with weak Fire, its flame is naturally short. Within the eyes, not only Shen Water (Divine Fluid) nourishes them, but Shen Fire (Divine Fire) is also stored. Light reaching far distances is due to Fire; myopia indicates weak Shen Fire. Shen Fire is stored in the eyes but emanates from the Kidneys. Treating myopia must primarily tonify Kidney Fire. However, Fire cannot survive without Water. Although myopic people have Kidney Water, can they protect it from postnatal depletion? Supplementing Fire within Water is a difficult principle. Use Yanghuozhuming Tang: Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 5 qian), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 3 qian), Rui Yu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 5 qian), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, 1 liang), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 3 qian), Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 3 fen), Gou Qi (Lycii Fructus, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one month, distant vision gradually improves. Continue preparing the previous herbs into pills or powder for daily consumption; after one year, both near and far vision will be restored. During medication, strict sexual abstinence is essential; otherwise, only half the benefit is achieved. This formula tonifies Mingmen Fire to assist Yang. Assisting Yang essentially benefits Yin, causing no harm, but caution is advised against those who misuse Yang for pleasure. For this condition, Jianyuan Tang is also good. Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Bei Wu Wei (Schisandrae Fructus) (each 1 qian), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Rui Yu (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) (each 1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
A person suffers eye pain with pupils larger than yellow jujube pits, blurry vision where small objects appear large. People attribute this to internal heat, but it is actually due to Qi and Blood deficiency, aggravated by sudden consumption of hot foods and strong wine. The essence of all Zang-Fu organs ascends to the eyes, especially the pupils. Abundant essence makes pupils bright; deficient essence makes them dim. Blurred size perception occurs because tendons, bones, Qi, and Blood essence form vessels and connections ascending to the brain. Brain heat causes pupil dilation; brain heat results from excessive spicy and hot foods. Strong wine is the hottest liquid, and its nature is dispersing. Brain essence dislikes dispersion and disperses easily; heat combined with dispersion makes brain Qi unsafe. It inevitably disperses with heat. Once brain Qi is hot, it resists cooling and stillness; thus, preventing pupil dilation is impossible, and accurate vision cannot be maintained. Treatment focuses on clearing heat and benefiting Qi. Clearing heat requires nourishing Yin; nourishing Yin facilitates lowering Fire. Then, adding sour astringents to nourishing and lowering agents helps收敛 (astringe) the dispersed Shen Spirit in the pupils. Use Liantong Dan: Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 1 liang), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 5 qian), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 3 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 1 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex, 5 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 5 fen), Zuo Mu Zhi (Quercus Branch, 3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 5 fen), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, 5 fen). Decoct in water and take orally. After four doses, pupils gradually shrink; after another four doses, vision stabilizes; cured in one month. This formula cools blood while tonifying blood, drains pathogens while supporting healthy Qi, removes wine heat invisibly, and gathers dispersed essence unconsciously, possessing subtle wonders beyond understanding, surpassing Dongyuan's methods. For this condition, Shujing Dan is also effective. Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (each 1 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 5 qian), Chao Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus Praeparated), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 3 qian), Bei Wu Wei (Schisandrae Fructus, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Cured in ten doses.
A person develops eye opacity (nebula) within days of eye disease, rising from below, with a pale green color and unbearable pupil pain. People attribute this to Liver Wind, but it is actually Kidney Fire attacking the Lung, where Lung Fire and Kidney Water combine unresolved. Kidney governs Black, Lung governs White; combining White and Black turns Green. Kidney is the son of Lung, Lung is the mother of Kidney; how do their Fires clash? It is a reversal of the mother-son relationship. Usually, mother-son clashes are minor; here, the opacity rises from below, indicating the son attacking the mother, due to the mother's excessive softness. Can a strong mother be attacked by her son? Therefore, treatment involves tonifying the mother to pacify the rebellious son. Although sons are naturally rebellious, they require instigation from others to act recklessly. Kidney Fire attacking the Lung also involves meridian disharmony. Tonifying Lung Metal to suppress Kidney requires regulating meridians to isolate Kidney Fire's allies. Use Jianmu Dan: Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Tian Dong (Asparagi Tuber) (each 1 liang), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria), Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix) (each 3 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 3 fen), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Green color fades after one dose; opacity disperses after four doses; cured in ten doses. This formula uses Er Dong (Mai Dong and Tian Dong) to tonify the Lung, Gan Cao and Jie Geng to disperse Lung pathogens, and Huang Qin to clear Lung Fire. Once Lung Qi is vigorous, Kidney Fire cannot invade. Additionally, Fu Ling drains Bladder Fire, Qing Hao clears Stomach-Spleen Heat, Bai Shao pacifies Liver-Gallbladder Qi, and Dan Shen clears Heart inflammation. With all Zang-Fu organs cooled, how can Kidney pathogenic Fire cause trouble? Like a family where uncles and brothers are upright gentlemen gathering to advise, a rebellious son feels ashamed and stops his rebellion. For this condition, Yifei Tang is also effective. Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 2 liang), Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Tuber, 5 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (each 1 liang). Decoct in water and take orally. Cured in ten doses.
A person has healthy eyes but sees objects inverted. People attribute this to rebellious Liver Qi, but it is actually due to inverted Liver Leaf. Eye connections pass through the Liver, and Liver Spirit focuses on the eyes. Slanted Liver leads to slanted vision; straight Liver leads to straight vision; curved Liver leads to curved vision; divided Liver leads to divided vision. Seeing inversion is due to inverted Liver Leaf. This likely results from vomiting. Vomiting reverses the Five Zang organs, opening the Liver Leaf, blocking the Upper Jiao, preventing immediate rotation, causing Liver Leaf inversion and inverted vision. Treatment should induce vomiting again, but one vomit already injures the Five Zang organs; a second vomit would severely damage Qi and Blood. Without vomiting, the Liver Leaf does not rotate easily. I use harmonizing methods within vomiting. Use Anzang Tang: Shen Lu Bian (Ginseng Radix Rhizoma, 2 liang), Gua Di (Melonis Fructus, 7 pieces), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica, 3 qian). Decoct in three large bowls of water, take all at once, then sweep the throat with goose feathers to induce heavy vomiting. After vomiting, the Liver Leaf will align. Guadi San is originally a vomiting agent; I added Shen Lu Bian, Gan Cao, and Jing Jie to promote vomiting within tonification and calm meridians within vomiting, avoiding severe Qi and Blood damage from organ reversal. This is a modified vomiting method applicable to deficient patients requiring vomiting. For this condition, Shenlu Tang induced vomiting is also excellent. Ren Shen Lu (Ginseng Radix Rhizoma, 4 liang). Decoct in several bowls of water, consume all, sweep throat with goose feathers to induce vomiting; cured immediately after vomiting.
After fright and palpitations, a person's eyes remain open and cannot close despite efforts. People attribute this to weak Heart Qi, but it is actually Qi stagnation in the Liver and Gallbladder. Although all Zang-Fu organs receive Qi from Spleen Earth and connect to the eyes, eye connections internally link to the Liver and Gallbladder. Sufficient Liver-Gallbladder Blood leads to smooth Qi; deficient Blood leads to Qi stagnation. This applies to normal states. Upon fright, Liver-Gallbladder Blood contracts; upon palpitations, Blood stops. Stopped and contracted Blood causes Qi to knot. Kotted Qi prevents Liver-Gallbladder connections from ascending to the eyes, keeping eyelids from closing. Treatment must resolve Qi stagnation, which is difficult; thus, one must tonify Liver-Gallbladder Blood. Vigorous Blood extends Qi, resolving stagnation. Use Jiejieshuqi Tang: Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 1 liang), Chao Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Praeparated, 1 liang), Yu Li Ren (Pruni Semen, 3 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. Eyes can close after one dose. Bai Shao pacifies excessive Liver-Gallbladder activity, tonifying while draining; Dang Gui nourishes Liver-Gallbladder dryness, dispersing while tonifying; Chao Zao Ren calms the Heart; when the Heart is calm, it need not rely on the Liver, so the Son is calm and the Mother is calmer. Yu Li Ren removes Liver-Gallbladder knots, entering the three herbs to easily enter the Liver, soothing stagnation and relieving depression, hence working in one dose. For this condition, Shujie Tang is also miraculous.
