There are cases where a carbuncle (carbuncle) develops in the lower abdomen. This is definitely not a Yang-toxin syndrome (syndrome caused by pathogenic heat toxins), because this location belongs to the Yin aspect. A Yin location generating Yin-toxin seems extremely severe; however, if it is purely Yin without Yang, using Yang-tonifying herbs can achieve success immediately. Unfortunately, people today, upon seeing a carbuncle on the abdomen, often use Yin-cooling herbs to clear toxicity, which instead leads to an incurable condition, which is truly pitiable. However, the "Yang herbs" I refer to are not those that dissipate fire and dispel wind, but rather those that tonify Qi and warm Yang. Generally, Yin-toxin forming in a Yin location is due to Cold and Deficiency. Cold fails to circulate due to deficiency, and toxin becomes stagnant due to cold. Using hot herbs to dispel cold will naturally resolve the cold and scatter the toxin. The prescription used is Bi Han Jiu Fu Dan (Cold-Dispelling Abdomen-Saving Decoction):
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3 liang), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 3 qian), Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 3 liang), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 liang), She Chuang Zi (Cnidii Fructus, 5 qian). Decoct with water and take orally. After one dose, internal resolution occurs. If already ulcerated, after three doses, pus will be exhausted and flesh regenerated. After four doses, complete recovery is certain.
In this formula, Bai Zhu is used as the Sovereign herb because it specifically promotes the movement of Qi in the waist and umbilical region. When Qi in the waist and umbilical region flows freely, all areas of the lower abdomen become unobstructed. Subsequently, Jin Yin Hua and She Chuang Zi are used to dispel toxic vapors, making them easy to eliminate. However, fearing that extreme cold cannot penetrate directly, Fu Zi and Rou Gui are added to break through barriers and enter the disease site. Since Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Fu Zi, Bai Zhu, and She Chuang Zi are all drying substances, although the pathogen is expelled, there is a risk of consuming blood. Therefore, Dang Gui, described as "Yin within Yang," is used to slightly restrain their dryness. Thus, Yin-cold gradually disperses without the danger of excessive Yang activity. This ensures efficacy while preventing future complications.
There are cases where sudden pain and high swelling occur beside the thigh, near the Chang Qiang acupoint (GV1), transforming into a carbuncle or malignant sore (carcinoma/abscess). Over time, bone-like structures form within the flesh, which are removed with iron tweezers, only to regenerate later. People call this "Multi-bone Carbuncle" (Polyosteal Abscess), unaware that it is actually transformed from Damp-Heat toxin. The generation of Multi-bone Carbuncle results from consuming raw fruits, leading to the accumulation of Damp-Heat. If treated early, one or two doses can resolve it. Due to procrastination or improper treatment, Dampness stagnates and generates Heat; excessive Heat transforms into bone-like structures. Prolonged illness leads to bedridden states. Some argue that initially, when no bone exists, internal dispersion is possible; but once bones appear, they must be rotted out externally, and complete resolution cannot be hoped for. However, this is incorrect. The "bone" in this condition is formed from无形 (formless) Qi transformation, not true bone growing in the flesh; it merely resembles bone. True bone is hard to dissolve, but what difficulty is there in dissolving something that merely resembles bone? The treatment method involves promoting urination to remove Dampness, clearing Heat, and primarily supplementing Qi and Blood. Without explicitly targeting bone dissolution, the bone-like structures will disappear spontaneously. The prescription used is Wu Shen Tang (Five Gods Decoction):
Fu Ling (Poria, 1 liang), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen, 1 liang), Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 3 liang), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 5 qian), Zi Hua Di Ding (Viola Yedoensis Herba, 1 liang). Decoct with water and take orally. Symptoms lighten after one dose, further after two doses, bone-like structures disappear after three doses, the wound flattens after four doses, and full recovery is achieved after five doses.
In this formula, Fu Ling and Che Qian Zi promote urination; Zi Hua Di Ding clears Heat; Jin Yin Hua and Niu Xi tonify the Middle Jiao and scatter toxin. How could it fail to achieve efficacy?
