After a woman has just given birth, she suddenly experiences blurred vision and dizziness, nausea with the urge to vomit, slight sweating on the forehead and nose tip, cold air exhaled from the nostrils, and a sensation of the spirit and soul drifting outward. People consider this to be the affliction of "evil blood rushing to the heart," but who would know it is actually blood vertigo caused by Qi deficiency and impending collapse? Generally, after new childbirth, blood has been largely exhausted, leaving the Blood Residence (referring to the Heart, which governs blood vessels) empty, retaining only faint Qi. If the person's Yang Qi has always been deficient, then Qi originally cannot generate Blood. When the placenta ruptures and Heart Blood falls with the placenta, the Heart lacks Blood nourishment, relying solely on Qi to consolidate it. Now that Qi is also deficient and collapsing, the Heart Monarch (Heart) has no protection; the remaining residual blood is not normal blood and cannot return to the meridians, causing internal chaos in the Zang-Fu organs, thus forming the syndrome of blood vertigo. The treatment method must strongly tonify both Qi and Blood, rather than treating blood vertigo alone. Tonifying Blood generates new Blood, while properly activating Blood expels old Blood. However, Blood is a tangible substance, difficult to generate quickly; Qi is an intangible substance, easy to grow rapidly. Tonifying Qi to generate Blood is more efficient than tonifying Blood to generate Blood. Use the Formula for Resolving Vertigo (Jie Yun Tang): Schizonepetae Spica (San Qian), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Yi Liang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Yi Liang), Prepared Zingiberis Rhizoma (Yi Qian), Astragali Membranacei Radix (Yi Liang). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, vertigo stops; after two doses, the mind settles; after three doses, Qi becomes robust; after four doses, Blood is generated, and vertigo does not recur.
This formula is truly a sacred prescription for resolving blood vertigo. Any postpartum woman who can take this formula will certainly not suffer from maternal decline syndromes. If Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma is too potent or unavailable, reduce the dosage by half, or use only one or two qian, keeping other dosages as specified. Taking several more doses will invariably yield results.
The Formula of Ginseng, Angelica, and Schizonepeta (Shen Gui Jing Jie Tang) is also very effective: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Yi Liang), Schizonepetae Spica (San Qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Yi Liang). Decoct in water and take orally.
When a woman's fetus has just landed on the ground, she immediately becomes unconscious and mute. This is a syndrome of simultaneous depletion of Qi and Blood, originally considered incurable. I received secret transmission from Master Qi to save women dying from childbirth for ten thousand generations. One should urgently prick the acupoint at the glabella (Yintang) with a sewing needle. Once blood flows out, speech and consciousness will return. Then, administer Single-herb Ginseng Decoction (Du Shen Tang): Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Liang), decoct urgently and灌 (force-feed). There will be none who do not survive. For poor women unable to afford Ginseng, use Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang: Astragali Membranacei Radix (Liang Er), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Liang Yi), decoct into one bowl of soup and灌. It will also save them. Under no circumstances should Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) be lightly added to these two formulas. Because Fuzi travels everywhere without staying put, it may guide Qi and Blood herbs to move rather than stabilize, preventing them from focusing on the uterus. It is inferior to Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Angelicae Sinensis Radix, which directly rescue the exhaustion of Qi and Blood, gathering rather than scattering. Postpartum unconsciousness is entirely due to the emptiness of the Blood Residence, lack of Blood to nourish the Heart, resulting in blood vertigo. The tongue is the sprout of the Heart; if the Heart has no master, how can the tongue produce sound? The glabella connects upward to the brain and downward to the tongue root, linking to the Heart. Pricking the glabella opens both the brain and tongue, allowing clear Qi in the Heart to ascend, causing stasis to naturally descend. Then, tonifying with Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Astragali Membranacei Radix, and Angelicae Sinensis Radix reconnects Qi and Blood, making death impossible. Although using only Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Astragali Membranacei Radix, and Angelicae Sinensis Radix can also save lives, pricking the glabella ensures absolute safety. Stasis rushing to the Heart causes unconsciousness and muteness; resolving the rush of stasis is indeed grasping the key point. People only know the method of moxibustion on the eyebrows, but who knows that needling surpasses moxibustion? Moxibustion is slow, while needling is urgent. Slowness makes it hard to save critical cases, while urgency facilitates revival.
One may also use the Formula of Ginseng, Aconite, and Motherwort (Shen Fu Yi Mu Tang): Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Yi Liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Yi Qian), Leonuri Herba (Er Qian). Decoct in water. In such cases, urgently have someone hold the mother, untie the hair at the vertex of the head, and apply urgent moxibustion with mugwort fire. She will surely speak. Then rescue her with Shen Fu Yi Mu Tang; many will survive.
A woman three days postpartum presents with fever and retention of lochia. Defective blood attacks the Heart, causing delirious speech and shouting, even running about uncontrollably. People believe this is pathogenic heat in the Stomach, but who knows it is Blood deficiency failing to nourish the Heart? Postpartum blood all escapes with the placenta, leaving the Blood Chamber empty, so the Five Zang Organs lack Blood nourishment. At this time, only a trace of Heart Blood remains to protect the Heart. Each Zang-Fu organ seeks supply from the Heart. The Pericardium, as the minister of the Heart Monarch, blocks and refuses Qi from other organs, preventing entry into the Heart, thus keeping the Heart calm and the spirit settled. This protection relies entirely on the Pericardium. However, the Pericardium is also deficient. If it cannot shield the Heart, Qi from other organs enters directly to share the Heart Blood. The Pericardium is in extreme distress, unable to protect the Heart or defend against the others, so it cries out loudly. Intending to summon organs to save the Heart, its behavior resembles madness, appearing helpless. Thus, the disease appears like heat but is not excess heat. The treatment method is to strongly tonify the Blood in the Heart, allowing other organs to draw from it for self-nourishment, so they no longer demand from the Heart Monarch. Then the Heart calms, and the Pericardium is at ease. Use the Formula for Calming the Heart (An Xin Tang): Dried Lotus Leaf (Yi Pian), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Wu Qian), Moutan Cortex (Wu Qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Liang Er), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Yi Liang), Sanguisorbae Radix Raw (Er Qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
After one dose, symptoms stabilize, and lochia is discharged.
This formula uses Angelicae Sinensis Radix and Chuanxiong Rhizoma to tonify Blood, yet why use cooling herbs like Rehmanniae Radix Recens and Moutan Cortex, which seem unsuitable for postpartum? It is unknown that when defective blood rushes to the Heart, it is inevitably due to deficiency-heat invasion. By adding cooling herbs within the tonification, the cooling nature does no harm. Moreover, adding dried lotus leaf allows communication through the seven orifices, guiding pathogenic factors outward without harming the Heart internally, while raw Sanguisorbae Radix resolves defective lochia. However, this formula should only be used temporarily for one dose to settle madness, not for multiple doses to seek victory. Caution is essential.
The Formula of Ginseng, Angelica, Schizonepeta, Jujube Seed, and Motherwort (Shen Gui Jing Zao Yi Mu Tang) is also effective: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Processed Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (each Yi Liang), Schizonepetae Spica, Leonuri Herba (each San Qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
