The Five Movements (Wu Yun, the movement of the five phases) allow one to discern the correct commands of Cold, Heat, Warmth, and Coolness; the Six Qi (Liu Qi, wind, heat, fire, dampness, dryness, cold) require examination of their superimposition upon the main qi, indicating excess, deficiency, or peace. If the Six Qi arrive in great force, they all transform into pathogenic factors; if the Five Movements lose harmony, disasters and diseases arise. When the movements are either weak or excessive and arrive suddenly out of season, one must observe which seasonal qi transformation they coincide with. Furthermore, if this coincides with a year of deficiency (weak annual movement) and a month of emptiness (waning moon), resulting in a double exposure to pathogens, the syndrome will be severe.
[Note] "Movement" refers to the Five Movements, governing the four seasons. In heaven, they manifest as the correct commands of Cold, Heat, Warmth, and Coolness; on earth, as the correct transformations of Growth, Flourishing, Harvesting, and Storage. "Qi" refers to the Six Qi, governing the six steps (periods) of the year. Regarding the Main Qi, there are fixed normal conditions of Wind, Heat, Fire, Dampness, Dryness, and Cold. Regarding the Guest Qi, there are different responses of excess, deficiency, and peace when the Six Qi superimpose upon the Main Qi. Whenever the arrival of the Five Movements and Six Qi is timely, without weakness or excess, and harmonious, it is called Ping Qi (Normal/Peaceful Qi). Even if timely, if the Six Qi arrive in great force, or the Five Movements are weak or excessive, or appear out of season, or arrive suddenly, these are all Qi of pathological transformation, disharmony, and imbalance, which harm things and cause disease. One must only observe which seasonal Qi transformation coincides with the pathology, and then deliberate the appropriate treatment. If illness occurs under these conditions, and further coincides with a year of deficiency and a month of emptiness, leading to a double exposure to pathogens, the syndrome will inevitably be heavy and not mild.
