(Formula by Zhang Hezi) Treats sudden phlegm obstruction with excessive phlegm turbidity, mania and delirium with restlessness and confusion, unconsciousness, five types of epilepsy with phlegm surging and phlegm syncope, headache; as well as food stagnation in the Taiyin (Spleen/Stomach) meridian, with an urge to vomit but inability to do so.
Genti (Cucurbitae Fructus), Lilü (Veratrum Nigrum Rhizoma), Yujin (Curcumae Radix) in equal parts, ground into powder, mixed with sour water for administration. (Dosage should be adjusted according to the patient's deficiency or excess condition; induce vomiting by probing the throat with a goose feather.)
(Recorded in Li Shizhen's *Compendium of Materia Medica*) Treats phlegm surging and obstruction in patients with deficient constitution.
Ren Shen Lu (Ginseng Radicula) ground into powder, taken with water, one to two qian. Alternatively, mix with Zhu Li (Bambusa Textilis Juice) for oral administration.
(Recorded in Sun Simiao's *Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold*) Treats pain radiating to the chest and diaphragm due to food injury, epigastric fullness and hardness with obstruction, cold extremities, and absence of the Chi pulse; generally treats cholera, gu poison, and evil cold invasion.
Shi Yan (Halitum, calcined), mixed with cooked water for drinking, induce vomiting by probing the throat with fingers. Alternatively, mixing with hot Tong Bian (Child's Urine) is even better. The San Sheng San (Three Sages Powder) removes Xiang Chi (Fermented Soybean) and Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean) from the Genti San formula, adding Lilü (Veratrum Nigrum Rhizoma) and Yujin (Curcumae Radix) to complete it. This formula induces vomiting of Excess Heat and Wind-Phlegm. (Genti induces vomiting of Excess Heat; Lilü and Yujin induce vomiting of Wind-Phlegm.) Epilepsy, mania, and phlegm syncope are all caused by Phlegm. (The coma of the five epilepsies and the confusion of mania are all the fault of Phlegm.) For deficient cases, only Ren Shen Lu (Ginseng Radicula) is used. (Named Canlu San, Ginseng tonifies Yin within Yang, while the radicula drains Yang within Yin, similar to how the root and nodes of Mahuang differ in function.) Severe phlegm requires Wutou Fuzui Jian (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata Tip) to penetrate. (Danxi treated Xu Baiyun using formulas like Genti San and San Sheng San, but repeated vomiting was ineffective; later, after administering Jiang Shui (fermented rice water) with Wutou Fuzui Jian, profuse vomiting was achieved.) The *Qianjin Fang* also contains the Shaoyan Formula, which is effective for all types of accumulations. (Salt can soften hardness and break stubborn phlegm and old accumulations; when calcined, it becomes bitter and thus induces vomiting. Using Tong Bian (Child's Urine) guides fire downward. Upward expulsion and downward guidance clear obstructions. The *Qianjin Fang* states: "For diseases involving accumulation, one should first take this formula; it is far superior to other medications.") Who has been most proficient in the Vomiting Method since ancient times? Zhang Hezi is the foremost master. (*Zhang Hezi excelled in using vomiting.* According to *Ru Men Shi Qin*: "The method of vomiting phlegm possesses its own principles of control and release. Only the method of using vomiting as sweating is rarely known by the world. One does not know that the principle of dispersion exists within vomiting; therefore, I once stated that the vomiting method combines the effects of sweating, based on this.")
