(Liu Wansu, *Suwen Bingji Qi Yi Baoming Ji*) Treats vomiting with a wiry pulse, headache, and hot cough.
Add double the amount of Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) to Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), add half a liang of Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), make pills with wheat paste, and take with Shengjiang Tang (Fresh Ginger Decoction).
Qingzhen Wan (Clearing and Settling Pill) treats hot cough, vomiting, wiry pulse, and headache. (A wiry pulse is the pulse of Shaoyang [Lesser Yang]. Wood-fire encroaching on Metal causes cough; attacking the Stomach causes vomiting; rushing upward causes headache.) This is an essential medicine.
(Zhang Jiebin, *Xin Fang Ba Zhen*) Whenever one contracts the irregular qi of the four seasons, resulting in fever, or alternating chills and fever, or due to fatigue or anger, or when heat enters the Blood Chamber in women, or after childbirth or menstruation when exposed to wind-cold, leading to symptoms such as chills and fever resembling malaria: provided there is external pathogenic factor combined with internal fire, it is necessary to use cooling dispersal methods, and this formula is suitable for primary treatment.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (2-3 qian), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (2 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1.5 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (8 fen), decoct in 1.5 zhong of water until...
Yi Chaihu Yin (First Bupleurum Drink) disperses from cold. ("One" represents the number of Water, indicating dispersal via cooling.) Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Shaoyao, Huangqin, Chenpi, and Gancao assist; when there is internal fire and external pathogen, the four seasons are not... distinguished separately.
(Zhang Jiebin, *Xin Fang Ba Zhen*) Whenever encountering external contraction of the four seasons, if the person's Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is sufficient, the Zang-Fu qi is naturally peaceful without fire, and during periods of winning and overcoming where there are originally no internal heat symptoms, one should not recklessly use cooling medicines, lest cold stagnation fail to disperse, causing significant harm. Instead, this formula is suitable for primary treatment.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (1.5 qian or 2-3 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (1.5 qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) (2 qian), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (1.5 qian), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (3-7 slices), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma)...
Er Chaihu Yin (Second Bupleurum Drink) disperses from warmth. ("Two" represents the number of Fire, indicating dispersal via warming.) Houpo, Xixin, Chenpi, and Banxia remain; Gancao and Shengjiang resolve external contraction; internally there is no heat... formula, transforming into a warming dispersal agent.)
(Zhang Jiebin, *Xin Fang Ba Zhen*) Whenever a person has inherent deficiency of Yin aspect, or liver channel blood deficiency while accidentally contracting wind-cold, or cases where tonification and dispersal can be combined, or post-illness/post-partum colds where dispersal is unavoidable but blood and qi are weak and unable to reach the exterior:
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (2-3 qian), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (1.5 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparatum) (each 1 qian), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (3-5 slices), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (2 qian; if loose stools occur...)
San Chaihu Yin (Third Bupleurum Drink): Three is the number of Wood. ("Three" represents the number of Wood, indicating treatment from the liver channel blood aspect.) Danggui, Shaoyao, Chenpi, Shengjiang, and Zhigancao constitute six ingredients. For those with inherent yin deficiency and external contraction, or liver channel blood deficiency, it is highly suitable. (This formula is modified from Sini San (Four Reversal Powder). Using Shengjiang to assist Chaihu, Danggui to assist Shaoyao, and Chenpi to assist Gancao, it simultaneously regulates blood and qi while dispersing external pathogens; it is also a harmonious formula.)
