Roll the fingernails well with double-red paper, burn them to charcoal while preserving their medicinal properties (burning to ash but retaining efficacy), and grind into powder.
Another method: stir-fry the fingernails with Hematite (Wumingyi) until the nails become brittle, remove the Hematite, and grind for use.
Grind Cinnabar (Shasha) until no sound is heard, process by water levigation (water flying), boil dry with vinegar, and use as if it were frost. However, Cinnabar can corrode metals and transform the human heart into blood; carefully consulting materia medica, Cinnabar can aid digestion and break up blood stasis and masses (zheng jia). It should not be taken in large doses.
In May, take one live mole cricket (Lougu), wrap it in the soft white membrane of a hen's egg that has just hatched chicks, place it inside the mouth of a large toad, bind tightly with grass, seal with mud, leave for a period, then take out, grind into powder, and set aside for use.
Another method: place the mole cricket on a tile, preserve its medicinal property by mild heating, without using the large toad, which is also acceptable.
Put table salt into clear water, dissolve completely, remove sediment, take the supernatant liquid, and refine by boiling. Pour back into a jar, heat thoroughly over charcoal fire. The best result is white like frost. Store for long-term use.
Specially treats acute throat wind (Ji Hou Feng), characterized by surging phlegm and rebellious qi. Blowing the powder into the throat yields immediate effect.
True Tibetan Musk (Zhen Xihuang), Pearl (Zhenzhu), Portulaca Seed/Dangmenzi (Dangmenzi) (each 1 qian), Cinnabar (Chensha) (4 qian), Saltpeter/Sodium Nitrate (Qiangxiao, i.e., Yaxiao) (1 liang 5 qian), Rock Crystal/Alum (Yueshi) (5 qian), Silkworm/Gangcan (Gangcan) (1 qian), Realgar/Xiongjing (Xiongjing), Human Waste Yellow/Ren Zhonghuang (Ren Zhonghuang) (1 qian).
Grind each of the nine ingredients into fine powder, store in a porcelain bottle, preventing leakage of air. When encountering acute throat wind, with rattling phlegm sounds and rapid breathing, urgently blow two or three tubes of this pill/powder. The symptoms will likely manifest as surging phlegm and shortness of breath approaching death. Some cases begin with chills and fever, appearing after three or four days, or within one or two days. Some appear in the morning and cause death by evening, or appear in the evening and cause death by morning. In all cases, surging phlegm and rapid breathing are the definitive signs. Upon seeing these symptoms, urgently use this pill/powder. Jinghua personally tested it, and it was indeed effective. Alternatively, crush the root of Chouhuaniang (Stink Flower Lady Root), extract the juice, and administer orally, which is also excellent. Xiuyuan's appended emergency prescription includes a formula similar to this, differing mainly in the use of 1 liang 5 qian of Saltpeter.
Specially treats rotting throat sand (Lan Hou Sha, a type of scarlet fever-like illness).
Cinnabar (Chensha) (2 qian), Yuan Cun (likely referring to Musk or similar precious substance), Western Musk (Xihuang), Rock Crystal/Alum (Yueshi) (each 3 fen), Amber (Hupo) (5 fen), Pearl (Zhenzhu), Mirabilite/Yuanmingfen (Yuanmingfen) (each 2 fen), Borneol (Bingpian) (1 qian), Soap Pod (Zaojia) (5 fen, noting that "meat ash" here is suspicious and unknown, so retained tentatively).
