(See the section on Blood Bi and Deficiency Consumption.) It treats abdominal pain in women. This formula is the primary treatment.
Yu Xi's commentary: The reason for using Jianzhong Tang (Middle-Jian Decoction) as the primary treatment for abdominal pain in women lies in tonifying the middle Jiao to generate blood, rather than merely nourishing blood to relieve pain. Since blood cannot be generated without Qi, and cannot circulate without Qi, by obtaining the power of Jianzhong Tang, the Qi of the Middle Jiao becomes robust and functional, leading to endless generation. Even if there is pain caused by blood stasis, it can be resolved.
It treats a condition in women where diet remains normal, but they experience irritability, heat, inability to lie flat, and instead must lean forward to breathe. This is named "Zhuan Pao" (Displaced Bladder), characterized by the inability to urinate. This occurs because the ligaments of the bladder are twisted and disordered, hence the disease. This formula is indicated.
Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (8 liang), Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Corni Fructus (each 4 liang), Poria, Moutan Cortex, Alismatis Rhizoma (each 3 liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (1 piece, processed), Cinnamomi Ramulus (1 liang).
The above eight ingredients are powdered. Mix with refined honey to make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 15 pills with wine, increasing up to 20 pills. Administer twice daily.
Song verse: Warm meridians, warm kidney, straighten the bladder palace; Dan, Ze, Ling, Di, eight parts blend well. Four liang each Yu, Shu, one Gui, one Fu; Truly ensure the ligaments are straight and Kidney Yuan is filled.
Male Yu Xi's commentary: The bladder (Pao) is the Sea of Blood, located below the umbilicus alongside the urinary bladder (Pang Guang). Both are hollow organs suspended in space, and their Qi mechanisms are interconnected. They completely rely on the abundance of Kidney Qi filling the space between them so that the ligaments of the bladder remain straight. If Kidney Qi is insufficient, the ligaments of the bladder become twisted and disordered. When the ligaments of the bladder are twisted and disordered, urination inevitably becomes obstructed. Although this disease manifests in the bladder, its control lies specifically in the Kidney. Therefore, Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill) is used as the primary treatment. In the formula, Dihuang and Shanyao consolidate the Yin of the Kidney; Shanzhuyu and Fuzi tonify the Yang of the Kidney; Guizhi transforms and moves the Qi of the Fu organs; Fuling promotes water passage. The subtlety lies in Zexie, which is round and agile in movement, allowing abundant Kidney Qi to fill the bladder so that its ligaments naturally straighten. Once the ligaments are straight, the difficulty in urination can be resolved. Additionally, it treats deficiency consumption with lower back pain, tension in the lower abdomen, and difficulty in urination. Because the waist is the external mansion of the Kidney, the Kidney governs opening and closing, and controls bone marrow. For tension in the abdomen and difficulty in urination, this formula tonifies True Yin and steams/moves Water Qi, achieving balance and stability of Yin and Yang, making the pivot of opening and closing function freely. Thus, it can treat deficiency consumption diseases. However, those with spontaneous profuse urination should not take it, because its draining and leaching action would further deplete Yin fluids.
