In the early autumn of the Xinwei year, Yuanxi went to Baoyang to visit his father, enjoying the joy of being at his knees. He privately observed that when his father had some leisure from official duties, he would select books such as *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases) and *Jingui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet), which had already been annotated three or four times, and re-annotate them with effort.
The day before the Double Ninth Festival in the 16th year of the Jiaqing reign, the second son Yuanxi recorded this at his lodging in Baoyang.
I have heard that among physicians, there is Zhang Zhongjing, just as among Confucians, there is Confucius. Zhang Zhongjing inherited and synthesized the medical theories of Huangdi (Yellow Emperor) and Qibo, grasping their essentials, just as Confucius modeled himself after the Way of Yao and Shun and collected their achievements. Now, there are also four works such as *Zijing*, which are clear, concise, and well-considered; his merit is great. The eldest son Guyu inherited this transmission and wrote *Changsha Ge Kua* (Song Verses of Changsha) in six volumes, to facilitate the study of *Shanghan Lun*. ... In the spring of the first month of the Bing Shen year, 16th year of Daoguang, your humble brother Jiang Hongsheng respectfully composed this.
1. The dosages, decoction methods, and administration methods in the formulas all follow the original texts. However, the standards of weight measurement differ between ancient and modern times. One tael in the Han Dynasty corresponds to a little over two qian today. I follow the method of Cheng Shi... for example, Guizhi... each flavor... two pieces...
2. After the song verse of each formula, a formula explanation is necessarily added. Occasionally, if the therapeutic methods and meanings are already detailed in the song verse, they are not explained again after the formula.
3. The famous sayings and profound discussions of former sages, immortal for millennia, are collected in this compilation either in the song verses or in the annotations without omission. Occasionally, there are those that do not fully satisfy my mind...
4. The various formulas in *Shanghan Lun* and *Jingui Yaolue* all originate from Yi Yin's *Tangye Jing* (Classic of Decoctions), as stated in the *Yiwen Zhi* (Bibliography). These formulas comprehend the subtleties of creation and cannot be judged by ordinary cold-warm-tonic-draining methods... An... Ri Li...
5. The attached formulas in *Jingui Yaolue*, although added by later authors, contain medicinal ingredients that are also extraordinary. Their formula names are now distinguished by Song-style font.
Treating Taiyang disease (disease of the Taiyang channel), where symptoms are complete, the body is stiff and rigid, [stiff], and the pulse is unexpectedly deep and slow, this is Jing disease (spasm disorder). This decoction is the primary treatment.
Gualou Gen (Trichosanthes Root), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, sliced), Shaoyao (White Peony Root) (each 3 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) (2 liang), Dazao (Jujube) (12 pieces, split open).
The above six ingredients are crushed. Boil in 9 sheng of water, using low heat until 3 sheng remain. Take warm, divided into three doses. Aim for slight sweating. If sweat does not occur, drink hot porridge shortly after eating to induce sweating.
Song Verse: Taiyang symptoms complete, pulse unexpectedly deep and slow; Body [stiff], about to spasm. Three taels of Gualou Gen, Ginger, Cinnamon Twig, and Peony; Two taels of Licorice, twelve Jujubes are suitable.
Yuanxi notes: Jing disease is caused by blood deficiency leading to dryness of the sinews. Mentioning dampness refers to speculating on the state before the formation of Jing disease, where dampness combines with wind to stagnate and generate internal heat. The original text states... add Gualou... dryness and spasm...
Furthermore, in the formula, Shengjiang and Guizhi combined with Gancao and Dazao transform into Yang through Pungent-Sweet interaction; Shaoyao combined with Gancao and Dazao transforms into Yin through Bitter-Sweet interaction. When Yin and Yang harmonize, slight sweating occurs and pathogens are resolved. Drinking porridge further nourishes the Grain Qi of the Yangming Stomach to overcome pathogens, representing a deeper level of prescription strategy. However, if there is stiffness in the neck and back with a floating and rapid pulse, it indicates Wind pathogen overflowing externally while internal fluids are not yet damaged, so Gegen (Kudzu Root) is added to disseminate external pathogens. If the pulse is deep and slow, it indicates Wind pathogen overflowing externally while internal fluids are already damaged, so Gualou Gen is added to nourish internally. This is due to the significant bitter-cold moistening and drying-resolving efficacy of Gualou Gen. The *Neijing* states: Lung transferring heat to Kidney transmits to become Rou Jing (soft spasm). Pang Anchang believes that in this formula, Gualou Gen does not primarily...
