Treats Qi-pattern (Qi-pattern) manifesting as hardness below the heart, with a mass large as a plate and edges resembling an inverted cup. This decoction is the primary treatment for this condition.
Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) ingredients: Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), Fresh Ginger Shengjiang (each 3 liang). Asarum Xixin, Licorice Gancao, Ephedrae Herba Mahuang (each 2 liang). Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata Fuzi (1 piece, processed). Jujubae Fructus Dazao (12 pieces).
Take the above seven herbs, add 7 sheng of water. First boil Mahuang, remove the foam on the surface. Then add the remaining herbs. Boil until 2 sheng remains. Divide into three warm doses. Sweating should occur, with a sensation like insects crawling under the skin.
The verse states: Hardness below the heart like a plate, edges like an inverted cup. Use 2 liang each of Xixin and Mahuang, one whole piece of Fuzi. 3 liang each of Shengjiang and Guizhi, 12 pieces of Dazao. For Qi-pattern, one must restore the circulation of Qi.
(Commentary) This syndrome involves simultaneous pathology of the Heart and Kidney. Upper Qi fails to descend, lower Qi fails to ascend. Accumulating day after day, it becomes hard as iron or stone, difficult to break. The formula uses Mahuang, Guizhi, and Shengjiang to attack pathogens in the upper jiao; Fuzi and Xixin to attack pathogens in the lower jiao; Gancao and Dazao to tonify the Middle Jiao to facilitate Qi transformation. Thus, the Qi of the upper and lower jiao communicates, and the disease can be cured. This is what is meant by "When the Great Qi turns, the accumulation dissipates."
Treats hardness below the heart, large as a plate, edges like an inverted cup, caused by Water-Fluid retention. This decoction is the primary treatment for this condition.
Zhisshi (7 pieces). Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma Baizhu (2 liang).
Take the above two herbs, add 5 sheng of water. Boil until 3 sheng remains. Divide into three warm doses. When the abdomen becomes soft, the pathogen will have dissipated.
The verse states: Hardness below the heart large and firm. Verify the binding and dispersal of pathogens by their edges. Use 2 liang of Baizhu and 7 pieces of Zhisshi. Bitter-draining methods treat abnormalities of Water-Fluid.
Wei notes: Mentioning Water-Fluid serves to distinguish it from Qi-pattern. Qi is formless, dispersed by acrid-sweet agents. Water has form, drained by bitter agents. The formula utilizes Baizhu...
(See Wet-Bi Syndrome.) Treats Feng-Shui (Wind-Water edema) where the pulse is floating, indicating the pathogen is in the exterior. The patient may have sweating only on the head, with no other exterior symptoms. The patient feels heaviness in the lower body.
If urination is obstructed, edema and swelling of the yin organs will occur, making flexion and extension difficult.
(The verse is found in *Changsha Fang Ge Kuo*.) Treats Gu-Dan (Grass Jaundice) manifesting as alternating chills and fever, anorexia, dizziness and mental unease immediately after eating, and yellowing of the skin over time. This decoction is the primary treatment for this condition.
Yinchenhao, Gardeniae Fructus Zhizi, Rhei Radix et Rhizoma Dahuang.
Nan Yuanxi notes: Taiyin belongs to Damp-Earth, Yangming belongs to Dry-Earth. The Classics state: Grain enters the Stomach, its essence floats and spreads, transporting upwards and downwards, relying on Spleen Qi. If Spleen Qi is obstructed and fails to flow smoothly, diseases such as alternating chills/fever and anorexia arise. The Classics state: Food enters Yin, nourishing Yang. Dizziness and mental unease after eating occur because grain entering the Stomach carries turbid Qi upward to disturb the clear orifices. The primary treatment is Yinchenshao Tang. Yinchen absorbs the cold-water Qi of winter; cold overcomes heat. Zhizi, bitter in taste, drains fire, and yellow in color enters the Stomach. Combined with Dahuang to purge stagnant heat in the intestines and stomach, forcing it downward. Thus, the pathogens of Gu-Dan are entirely resolved through urination and defecation.
