Treats Hu-Huo disease (a condition characterized by ulceration of the mouth, throat, and genitalia). The presentation resembles Taiyang disease (diseases affecting the exterior/initial stage). The patient is taciturn and desires sleep, yet cannot close their eyes; they are restless when lying down or sitting up. Ulceration in the throat is called "Huo" (Confusion); ulceration in the yin region (genitals) is called "Hu" (Fox). The patient desires food and drink but detests the smell of food. Their facial complexion fluctuates between red, black, and white. If ulcerated in the upper part (throat), the voice becomes hoarse; this decoction (Gancao Xiexin Tang) is indicated. If ulcerated in the lower part (genitals), wash with Kushen Tang. If ulcerated in the anus, fumigate with Xionghuang (Realgar).
Gancao (Licorice Root, 4 liang, honey-fried). Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Renshen (Ginseng Root) (each 3 liang). Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, half sheng). Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, 1 liang). Dazao (Jujube Fruit, 12 pieces).
Take the above seven herbs. Add one dou of water, boil to obtain six sheng of liquid. Remove the dregs. Re-boil to obtain three sheng. Take one sheng warm, three times a day.
Verse:
In the Shanghan Lun, Gancao Xiexin Tang (Licorice Decoction for Draining the Heart) works wonders by adding three liang of Renshen to support the righteous qi. It originally treats severe diarrhea resulting from Pi syndrome (epigastric fullness/stagnation); here it is used as a source-seeking formula for Hu-Huo disease.
Commentary by Yuanxi: Insects have consciousness, thus they can disturb the conscious heart and generate confusion. Insects are formed from blood transformation, thus they return to the heart which governs blood. Adding heat-inducing herbs mixed with bitter and acrid flavors is named "Xiexin" (Draining the Heart); the meaning is profound.
Kushen (Sophora Root, 1 sheng). Boil in one dou of water to obtain seven sheng. Remove dregs. Use for fumigation and washing, three times daily.
Pang Anshi in *Shanghan Zongbing Lun* uses half a jin of Kushen, four liang of Huaibai Pi (Bark of Sophora Tree), and four liang of Yelangya Gen (Root of Potentilla chinensis), boiled for fumigation and washing.
Xionghuang (Realgar) alone, ground into powder. Place between two cylindrical tiles. Burn and fumigate towards the anus.
Verse:
Kushen Tang washes the anterior yin. Lower ulceration (rising from below to affect the throat) causes deep dryness and heat. There is also the method of Xionghuang fumigation for anal insect erosion.
Commentary by Yuanxi: Ulceration in the throat is Huo; ulceration in the yin region is Hu. Hu-Huo disease arises from contracting wind-wood damp-heat qi, transforming from extreme cold to heat. Kushen is bitter and cold, utilizing its cold nature... [text fragment] ...to clear heat and dry dampness.
Treats rapid pulse, no fever but slight irritability, taciturnity with desire to sleep, sweating. Within three to four days of onset, the eyes become red like a turtledove's eyes. By seven to eight days, the area around the eyes turns black. If the patient can eat, pus has formed. This formula is indicated. It also treats hematochezia (blood after stool).
Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean, 3 sheng, soaked until sprouted, then dried in the sun). Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 10 fen).
Grind the above two herbs into a powder. Administer one cunbi (square inch measure) with Jiangshui (fermented grain water), three times daily.
Verse:
Eyes change colors from red to black frequently. Adzuki beans are sprouted and dried. Take three sheng of beans and ten fen of Danggui. Grind and mix with Jiangshui for three meals daily.
Commentary by Yuanxi: This treats diseases where damp-heat invades the yin regions. Generally, when dampness transforms into heat, it leans heavily towards heat. Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) governs Ministerial Fire; Jueyin (Terminal Yin) governs Wind-Wood. The middle reveals Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) fire. The color resembling water emerges from extreme fire. Primarily use Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean) to remove dampness, clear heat, and resolve toxicity, treating Shaoyin disease. Use Danggui to guide out heat and nourish blood, treating Jueyin disease. Below, use Jiangshui to harmonize Stomach Qi. When Stomach Qi harmonizes with Shaoyin, it is the virtue of Fire and Earth combining; when Stomach Qi harmonizes with Jueyin, Wood and Earth do not conflict. How subtle, how subtle!
Further Commentary: Some say it is Hu-Huo disease; others say it is Yin-Yang Du disease (Yin-Yang Toxic Disease). However, both are diseases of damp-heat accumulating into toxicity. *Jinkui Yaolue* lists it at the boundary of these two syndromes. That is... [text incomplete]
