(See Lung Abscess.) Wheezing and dyspnea due to fluid retention in the chest (Zhi Yin). This is treated with Tingli Dazao Xiefei Decoction.
Xu Dachun comments: The Lung governs Qi and serves as the pathway for its entry and exit. Master Zhang Zhongjing stated that wheezing and dyspnea caused by Zhi Yin result from pathogenic fluid obstructing the Lung, blocking the Qi pathways. The formula uses Tinglizi to drain...
In patients who vomit, thirst is expected; if they are thirsty, it indicates the condition is resolving. If they are not thirsty now, it is because fluid retention (Zhi Yin) exists below the heart. This decoction treats this condition.
Banxia (1 sheng) Shengjiang (0.5 jin)
Take the above two ingredients, add seven sheng of water, boil to obtain one and a half sheng, and divide into two warm doses.
Song says: When a vomiting patient becomes thirsty, drinking should remove the fluid. (Fluid is expelled with vomit, hence thirst.) If not thirsty, know that Zhi Yin resides. (Fluid can restrain dryness; now, due to lack of thirst...)
Xu Dachun comments: The *Shennong Bencao Jing* records great efficacy for Banxia. In all formulas of Zhang Zhongjing, its use follows these principles. For any vomiting case, this herb must be added.

Treat abdominal fullness and dry mouth and tongue, indicating water qi between the intestines. This formula treats it.
Fangji Jiumu Tingli Dahuang (each 1 liang)
Grind the above four herbs into powder, mix with honey to make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take before meals, one pill per dose, three times daily. Gradually increase the dose. If saliva appears in the mouth and thirst occurs, add Mangxiao half...
Song says: Water in the intestines leads to dry lips. (Since fluid gathers below, it no longer moistens the upper part; later, even if fluid enters, it tends downward and cannot nourish...)
Cheng said: Fangji and Jiumu guide fluid out anteriorly, while Dahuang and Tingli push fluid out posteriorly. Anterior and posterior dispersion reduces abdominal fullness and moves fluid. Spleen Qi...
Treat sudden vomiting, epigastric stuffiness (Pi), intercostal fluid retention, dizziness, and palpitations. This formula treats it.
Banxia (1 sheng) Shengjiang (0.5 jin) Fuling (4 liang)
Take the above three ingredients, add seven sheng of water, boil to obtain one and five tenths sheng, and divide into two warm doses.
Song says: Vomiting, palpitations, dizziness, and stuffiness present again. Cook Siling, Banxia, and eight liang of Shengjiang. Intercostal fluid requires the golden needle technique; mild diuresis combined with acrid dispersal captures the disease's nature.
Xu Dachun comments: Fluid stagnating below the heart causes Pi; fluid overwhelming the heart causes dizziness and palpitations; fluid obstructing the thoracic diaphragm impedes the ascending and descending mechanism of Yin and Yang, leading to vomiting. The formula uses Banxia to direct rebellious Qi downward, Shengjiang to promote Qi movement, and Fuling to guide out water. Together, they form an excellent formula for draining phlegm and stopping vomiting.
