The pathogenic factor resides between the sinews and bones, resulting in pain that feels like being pulled or tugged.
[You Zaijing] By combining the two clauses regarding the Fuyang (Foot-Yangming) and Shaoyin pulses, it can be understood that in individuals with abundant Gu Qi (Grain Qi/Nutritive Energy) of the Yangming channel, wind pathogens will necessarily exit along with sweat. Conversely, in individuals with insufficient blood in the Shaoyin channel, wind pathogens will lodge within the body and cause disease.
A pulse that is large yet choppy and small, accompanied by shortness of breath, spontaneous sweating, and severe joint pain (Lijie) rendering flexion and extension impossible, are all caused by drinking alcohol followed by exposure to wind while sweating. ("Spontaneous sweating" was originally written as "blood sweating" in the text; this has been corrected based on various editions.)
[Wei Liting] The term "Sheng Ren" (robust/heavy person) refers to individuals who are obese and plump. Those who appear robust externally must be deficient internally; therefore, obese people often suffer from Qi deficiency. Qi deficiency inevitably leads to shortness of breath, and Qi deficiency inevitably leads to profuse sweating. When wind pathogens invade the sinews and bones during sweating, the syndrome of Lijie joint pain manifests.
[You Zaijing] Because dampness is already accumulated internally in those accustomed to drinking wine, exposure to wind while sweating causes the dampness to become externally constrained. The internal and external factors attract each other, flowing into the joints, thus causing Lijie...
