(An: The following three sections are also not recorded in the Er Zhu Ben and Zhu Shi editions.)
Chaihu Yinzi Formula (Bupleurum Drink)
Note: Medicines are weighed using "tie" (a weight unit). This was rare before the Song Dynasty. (This statement is found in Xian Jiao's *Yi Sheng*.) Boiling the medicinal dregs again is seen in Tao's *Preface to Materia Medica*. However, this applies only to various tonic decoctions.
Changfu Helile Wan Formula (Long-term Consumption of Terminalia Pill)
The *Materia Medica* and *Tu Jing* quote Zhang Zhongjing saying: For a long-term consumption formula, use Helile (Terminalia chebula), Chenjupi (aged tangerine peel), and Houpo (Magnolia bark), each 3 da liang. Pound and sift, mix with honey to make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 20 to 30 pills per dose.
Sanwu Beiji Wan Formula (Three-Ingredient Emergency Rescue Pill)
(*Qianjin Fang* records: Three ingredients in equal parts. It says: "All three must be fresh and refined; quantities as desired. First pound Dahuang (Rhubarb) and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), sift into powder. Separately grind Badou (Croton seed) until it resembles grease. Mix into the powder, pound together for one thousand strokes, then use immediately. Making it into a powder is also acceptable. Mix with honey to make pills, store in a sealed container to prevent air leakage. *Bencao Tujing* quotes: The effect comes from Dahuang, Ganjiang, and Badou, each 1 liang. Must select fine, fresh herbs. Pound and sift, mix with honey, pound another one thousand times. Make pills the size of small beans. Take 3 pills per dose, adjust for age and constitution. Powder form is inferior to pill form." Etc. Regarding the phrase "three or four pills the size of a soybean" at the end of the prescription, according to *Qianjin Fang*, the phrasing after the formula is also good. The two characters likely belong above "mix with honey to make pills." It implies that while using powder is convenient, storing as honey pills is better for long-term preservation.)
*Leigong Paozhi Lun* states: "The size of a large bean" refers to comparing it with a carp eye weighing ten liang.
Note: Xu Shi says: The brilliance of this formula lies in Ganjiang, Badou, and Dahuang; they are harsh and purgative, addressing both cold and heat pathogens. With Ganjiang guarding the middle, the root of life remains intact, and it can open the spirit and restore normal nature. Thus, it can treat all cases of sudden death due to evil invasion. Cheng Shi says: Dahuang cleanses the intestines and stomach, Ganjiang warms the middle and disperses cold, Badou eliminates evil and kills ghosts. Therefore, it treats the aforementioned syndromes. I believe neither explanation is correct. The syndromes treated by this formula are extremely acute and excess-type; hesitation leads to disaster in an instant. Therefore, the treatment key is direct attack, achieving victory swiftly. Thus, Badou, pungent and hot with harsh purgative action, serves as the Sovereign herb; Dahuang as the Minister, assisting the harsh purgative function; Ganjiang as the Assistant, enhancing the pungent-hot nature. The three herbs rely on each other, making their efficacy even more fierce. They are the crown among purgative formulas, capable of matching such critical conditions.
*Shenghui Fang*: Treats heart and abdominal pain caused by malignant transmission, feeling like stabbing with awls or knives, distension and fullness nearly causing death, using Xiaoshi Wan (Niter Pill).
Add Xiaoshi (Niter) and Fuzi (Aconite) to this base formula.
Also treats sudden transmission where qi attacks the heart, causing abdominal distension and pain, loss of appetite; suitable to take Badou Wan (Croton Pill).
Add Muxiang (Aucklandia) and Peng'ezhu (Curcuma zedoaria) to this base formula.
Also treats sudden death and shock, with clenched jaw unable to open; suitable to take this formula.
Take this base formula, mix with jujube pulp, make pills the size of mung beans. Swallow with warm water.
*Shengji Zonglu*: Treats pediatric wooden tongue, swelling filling the mouth, using Sanwu Beiji Wan Formula.
Take this base formula, make pills the size of mung beans. Take 5 pills per dose, swallow with warm water. Stop when bowel movement occurs.
Shijue (Corpse-like Coma): Pulse moves but no breath (Quietly dead, *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* writes "quietly dies", *Waitai Mi Yao* agrees. The character "er" acts as "ru" [like], so "er" should be read as "ru".)
Note: Shijue is a disease where yang qi becomes violently excessive, overwhelming yin blood. It is roughly similar to Zhongqi (Qi Strike). Detailed explanations are in the *Bian Cang Zhuan Huikao*; consult there.
Rescue Method for Drowning
*Qianjin Fang* says: Simply bury the deceased person in warm ashes, covering head and feet completely, leaving only the seven orifices exposed.
Formula for Horse Falls and All Bone-Tendon Injuries
[Jian]: External bathing with powder to dissipate blood stasis, internal administration to purge blood stasis; this achieves the result.
Note: *Yixin Fang*, in the section on taking stones, cites Zhang Zhongjing's formulas four times. It is unknown if these were omitted from the original text. They are tentatively appended below.
Zhang Zhongjing says: For dissipation syndrome causing restlessness, stifling sensation, and urge to vomit without success, take Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) alone. Gancao (Licorice Root, 5 liang, sliced) with 5 sheng of water, boil to obtain 2 sheng. Take 1 sheng. Stop once vomiting occurs.
Zhang Zhongjing's formula: Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction), treating dissipation syndrome with severe abdominal pain.
Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit, 2 liang) Xiangchi (Prepared Soybean Paste, 3 sheng) Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 2 liang)
Cut the three ingredients, wrap in silk, boil in 9 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. Cover with clothing and lie down; moxibustion should induce sweating.
Zhang Zhongjing says: Banxia Tang (Pinellia Decoction), treating dissipation syndrome with dry retching and inability to eat or drink.
Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 8 liang, washed and processed) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 10 liang) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 3 liang) Jupi (Tangerine Peel, 3 liang)
The above four ingredients, boil in 7 sheng of water to obtain 3.5 sheng. Divide into three doses, consume within one day.
Zhang Zhongjing's formula: Treating Cold Food Dissipation Syndrome with difficulty in urination and defecation.
Xiangchi (Prepared Soybean Paste, 2 sheng) Damaizi (Hemp Seed, 1 sheng, broken)
The above two ingredients, boil in 4 sheng of water to obtain 2.8 he. Remove dregs and let cool. Take 6 he per dose, three times daily.
