Miaoxiang San (Wonderful Fragrance Powder) from *Liangfang* treats deficiency of Heart Qi, characterized by frequent heart pain that ceases upon pressure, accompanied by empty irritability, insomnia, and night sweats.
Ingredients: Huangqi (Radix Astragali, processed with ginger juice), Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, skin and wood removed), Fuling (Poria, skin removed), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae, core removed and stir-fried, each 1 liang), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-processed, each half liang), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, baked, 2 qian 5 fen), Chensha (Cinnabar, 3 qian, ground separately), Shexiang (Moschus, 1 qian, ground separately).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose at any time.
Commentary: This formula is suitable for removing Fuling and Shexiang. Since Heart Qi is already deficient, only nourishing and consolidating methods are appropriate. Given the presence of Muxiang which promotes circulation, adding the dispersing nature of Shexiang is inadvisable; given the light diuretic nature of Fushen, adding the draining property of Fuling is unnecessary. Ancients stated: "Pain relieved by pressure indicates deficiency; use sour astringents, avoid pungent dispersants." It is also said: "Chronic illness leading to Qi deficiency and Blood damage, as well as individuals who are chronically overworked and emaciated suffering from heart pain, all present as deficiency pain. Cases cured by major tonifying agents exist; this must be known."
