Lumbago due to Kidney Deficiency arises from the insufficiency of Essence and Qi, leading to the decline of Qi in the Foot-Shaoyin (Kidney) Meridian. The Foot-Shaoyin is the pathway of the Essence stored by the Kidneys. Its meridian passes through the spine, connects with the Kidneys, and reaches the waist region. When Essence and Qi are insufficient, the meridians become empty and painful. The symptoms include emaciation of the body, shortness of breath, inability to stand or walk steadily, and slight relief when lying down and resting. The pain is not severe but rather lingering and aching, recurring frequently without ceasing. The Classics state: "The loins are the mansion of the Kidneys; if one cannot turn or sway, the Kidneys are about to fail." This refers to this condition. Zhu Danxi stated: "In cases of Kidney Deficiency, the pulse is large."
Mijun Wan (Deer Antler Pill) from *Fangshu Fang*:
Milujun (Elk Antler, can be replaced with Lurong/Deer Antler), 1 liang; Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, processed), 1 liang; Bo Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus), 5 qian.
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take two pairs of sheep kidneys, boil them thoroughly in aged wine, remove the membranes, and grind into a paste. Mix with the powder to form pills the size of tung tree seeds, and dry them in the shade. If there are too few sheep kidneys and the mixture is too dry, add wine paste as a binder. Take 30-50 pills per dose, administered with warm wine or salted water decoction.
Qing'e Wan (Green Elm Pill):
Poguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, also known as Buguzhi), 4 liang, stir-fried until fragrant; Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), 8 liang, cleaned and stir-fried with ginger juice; Hutaorou (Juglandis Semen), 10 liang.
Grind the above ingredients into powder and make pills using wine paste, sized like walnut seeds. Take 30-50 pills per dose, taken on an empty stomach with warm wine. Honey pills are also acceptable. *Baiyi Xuansheng* mentions Buisui Dan (Marrow-Replenishing Pill), which adds Lurong (Deer Antler), 2 liang, and Moyao (Myrrhae Resina), 1 liang.
Wubi Shanyao Wan (Peerless Yam Pill):
Chishizhi (Halloysit Rubrum), 3 liang; Fuling (Poria), 3 liang (peeled); Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), 3 liang (pitted); Bajitian (Morindae Radix), 3 liang (core removed); Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), soaked in wine, 3 liang; Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), soaked in wine, 3 liang; Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), 3 liang; Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen), soaked in wine, 3 liang; Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), peeled, sliced, stir-fried with ginger juice, 3 liang; Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), 3 liang; Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), 6 liang; Rongzhrong (Cynomorii Herba), soaked in wine, 4 liang.
Make pills with honey, sized like walnut seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, on an empty stomach with warm wine or salted water decoction.
I once treated a woman surnamed Gu who suffered from lumbago due to Kidney Deficiency. I used two pig kidneys, slit them open, stuffed them with stir-fried Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) powder, sewed them up, boiled them until cooked, removed the medicinal herbs, and allowed her to consume them freely. She recovered.
