Zhang Wenzhong recorded in *Beiji Fang* (Emergency Formulas) that a person suffered from regurgitation since childhood, vomiting up all food and porridge shortly after eating. During the Zhenguan era, Xu Fengyu and his brothers, along with several famous physicians surnamed Chai and Jiang, were summoned to treat him, but ultimately failed to cure him. The patient gradually became weak and exhausted, with life hanging by a thread, expecting death at any moment. Suddenly, a guard suggested: "Drinking donkey urine is extremely effective." Thus, two he (a unit of volume) were consumed; subsequently, only half of the food was vomited. At dusk, another two he were taken, and after consuming porridge, no further vomiting occurred. The next day, this was reported to the court. Five or six others in the palace suffering from regurgitation took it simultaneously and recovered instantly. This substance has slight toxicity and should not be taken in excess; it must be drunk hot. For deep-seated diseases, efficacy should appear within seven days. It has been verified effective through repeated use.
*Guang Wuxing Ji* (Record of the Broad Five Elements) records that during the Yonghui era, a monk in Jiangzhou had suffered from dysphagia for years. On his deathbed, he left instructions to cut open his throat for examination. A creature was found, resembling a fish but with two heads, its entire body covered in fleshy scales. Placed in a bowl, it jumped incessantly. Various flavors thrown into the bowl were dissolved into water. At that time, the temple was harvesting knotweed to make indigo dye. A small amount of indigo was tested and placed in the bowl; the worm avoided the bowl in fear, and soon dissolved into water. Later generations used indigo to treat dysphagia, achieving consistent success.
Formula for Treating Plum-Pit Qi and Dysphagia:
Select plums that are half-green and half-yellow. For each plum, use one liang of salt, marinate for one day and night, then sun-dry. Repeat the process of soaking and drying until all moisture is exhausted. Take three green threads, sandwich two plums between them, tie securely with hemp thread, and place entirely into a porcelain jar. Seal and bury underground for one hundred days, then retrieve. Use one plum at a time, holding it in the mouth; swallowing the juice will immediately dissipate the sensation in the throat. Plums collected over one year can cure one person; those collected over two years can cure two people. Its miraculous effect is unparalleled.
Kunbu Wan (Kelp Pill): Treats the five types of dysphagia, a feeling of obstruction in the throat, and inability to swallow food or drink.
*Kelp* (washed), *Ophiopogon Tuber* (Maidong), *Asparagus Tuber* (Tianmendong) (both remove the heart, baked), *Chebula Fruit* (Heleli) (remove pit, 1.5 liang each), *Akebia Caulis* (Mutong), *Mirabilite* (Piaoxiao), *Prunus Seed* (Yuliren) (soaked in hot water, peel removed, lightly stir-fried), *Cinnamon Bark* (Guixin), *Lily Bulb* (Baihe) (1 liang each), *Antelope Horn* (Lingyangjiao) (shredded), *Apricot Kernel Tip* (Xingjian) (stir-fried with bran until yellow), *Perilla Seed* (Suzi) (lightly stir-fried), *Belamcanda Rhizome* (Shegan) (5 qian each), *Bupleurum Root* (Chaihu) (remove rhizome), *Citrus Peel* (Chenpi) (remove white pith), *Areca Seed* (Binglang) (dosage missing in original text).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Mix with refined honey and pound three hundred times. Shape into pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take thirty pills per dose, at any time, washed down with warm wine. After dinner, wrap one pill the size of a bullet in silk and hold it in the mouth to dissolve slowly.
