1. Question: There are three diseases in postpartum women: one is Jing disease (spasm), the second is Yumao (dizziness and confusion), and the third is difficult defecation. What does this mean? The Master said: Postpartum blood deficiency, excessive sweating, and susceptibility to wind pathogen lead to Jing disease (spasm). Loss of blood followed by sweating, with excessive cold, leads to Yumao (dizziness and confusion). Depletion of body fluids and dryness of the Stomach lead to difficult defecation.
2. In postpartum Yumao (dizziness and confusion), the pulse is faint, there is vomiting and inability to eat, stool is conversely hard, and only the head sweats. The reason for this is blood deficiency leading to Jue (reversal/cold extremities), and Jue inevitably causes Yumao. For Yumao to resolve, profuse sweating throughout the body must occur. Due to blood deficiency causing lower Jue (cold extremities) and solitary Yang floating upward, only the head sweats. Therefore, postpartum women tend to sweat; because Yin blood is depleted and deficient, Yang Qi alone is abundant, so sweating should occur to restore Yin-Yang balance. With hard stool, vomiting, and inability to eat, Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is indicated.
3. After symptoms resolve and appetite returns, if fever occurs again after seven or eight days, this indicates excess heat in the Stomach (Wei Shi), treated with Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction). (See section on Jing disease.)
4. For postpartum abdominal pain, Dang Gui Sheng Jiang Yang Rou Tang (Angelica Ginger Mutton Decoction) is indicated; it also treats abdominal cold cramps and deficiency-fatigue insufficiency.
Dang Gui Sheng Jiang Yang Rou Tang formula (See section on cold cramps).
5. For postpartum abdominal pain accompanied by irritability, fullness, and inability to lie down, Zhi Shi Shao Yao San (Immature Bitter Orange and White Peony Powder) is indicated.
Zhi Shi Shao Yao San formula

The above two ingredients are pounded into a powder. Take one cun-bi (measure) per dose, three times daily. It also treats abscesses and pus; take with wheat porridge.
6. The Master said: For postpartum abdominal pain, the method dictates using Zhi Shi Shao Yao San. If it does not heal, this indicates dried blood adhering below the umbilicus; Xia Yu Xue Tang (Drain Stasis Blood Decoction) is indicated. It also treats irregular menstruation.
Xia Yu Xue Tang formula
Da Huang (Rhubarb Rhizome) (three liang) Tao Ren (Peach Seed) (twenty kernels) E Chong (Ground Beetle) (twenty kernels, roasted, feet removed)
The above three ingredients are powdered, mixed with refined honey to form four pills. Boil one pill in one sheng of wine to obtain eight ge of liquid, and take in one dose. Fresh blood resembling pig liver will be discharged.
7. Seven or eight days postpartum, without Taiyang syndrome, there is hardness and pain in the lower abdomen, indicating incomplete expulsion of lochia. With constipation, irritability, and fever, the pulse is slightly solid. Fever doubles, and irritability worsens at Shen hour (3-5 PM); anorexia follows, with delirium upon eating, and mental confusion at night. Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) is indicated. Heat is in the interior, congealed in the Bladder region. (See section on Jing disease.)
8. Postpartum wind strike persists for dozens of days without resolution; slight headache, aversion to cold, intermittent fever, chest oppression, dry retching, and sweating occur. Although prolonged, the Yang Dan syndrome persists; Yang Dan Tang is appropriate. (This is Gui Zhi Tang [Cinnamon Twig Decoction]. See section on diarrhea.)
9. Postpartum wind strike with fever, bright red face, wheezing, and headache is treated with Zhu Ye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction).
Zhu Ye Tang formula

For stiff neck, use one large Fu Zi, broken into bean-sized pieces; boil medicine and skim off foam. For vomiting, add Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) half a sheng, washed.
10. In lactating women with deficiency in the breasts, irritability, restlessness, and vomiting/retching, An Zhong Yi Qi (Peace the Middle and Boost Qi) is achieved with Zhu Pi Da Wan (Bamboo Peel Large Pill).
Zhu Pi Da Wan formula
