(Attached to Stiffness of the Mouth and Jaw [Kou Jin]; see also Aphasia [Kou Ya] and Facial Paralysis [Kou Yan])
Prognosis of Spleen Wind: Voice cannot be produced. Or hands move up and down. One should moxa on the tips of the ten fingers of the hand. Next, moxa Ren-26 Shuigou (Water Gap). Next, Dazhui (GV-14). Next, the vessels in front of both ears, one cun above and below the ear opening. Next, above and below the joints of the two big toes, seven moxibustion cones each. To treat Spleen Wind, moxa Pishu (BL-20) on both sides of the spine, fifty cones each. For ordinary people, Pishu has no fixed location; it corresponds to the months of the four seasons. When sick, moxa the Zang-shu points, which are the Spleen points. This method is very excellent. Spleen Wind is generally called Eight Winds. For Wei Tui Feng (Crampy Leg Wind) with hemiplegia, aphonia, and inability to speak, moxa Baihui (GV-20). Next, Benshen (GB-13). Next, Chengjiang (CV-24). Next, Fengfu (GV-16). Next, Jianjing (GB-21). Next, Xinsu (BL-15). Next, Hand Five Caves (Shoushuliao, SI-11? Note: Text says "Hand Five Cans/Caves", likely referring to specific points or a typo for Shousanli etc., but literal translation used). Next, Zu Suikong (Foot Marrow Hole? Note: Likely a variant name or typo, possibly referring to Weizhong BL-40 or similar, but kept as literal). Shaoyang. Next, Foot Five Caves. Next, Foot Marrow Hole. Next, Foot Yangming. Each five hundred cones. For Stroke with loss of voice, inability to speak, flaccidity and lack of control, first moxa Tianchuang (SI-16), fifty cones. Extinguish the fire, then move to moxa Baihui (GV-20), fifty cones. Then return to moxa Tianchuang (SI-16), fifty cones. If one starts by moxing Baihui, the wind pathogen cannot be vented, attacks the internal Zang organs, tends to become closed and latent, and still results in loss of voice. Therefore, it is better to moxa Tianchuang first, then Baihui. One session of fifty cones completely dissipates the fire momentum. Moxa again according to the severity of the disease. For severe cases, three hundred cones at one point. Generally, for those whose stroke worsens after taking medicine, all Wind points should be moxed with three cones, without exception they will heal. It is miraculous and effective. Do not doubt. If the disease has not reached the heart, do not moxa recklessly. Also moxa for Feng Fei (Wind Flaccidity) with inability to speak and paralysis of hands and feet. (See detailed records in Qianjin Fang). Treat sudden illness nearing death, unable to speak. Treat Lung Wind Stroke with inability to speak. (Both see under Stroke.)
Master Chao said: The Spleen meridian connects to the stomach, runs alongside the pharynx, connects to the root of the tongue, and spreads under the tongue. The divergent branch of the Heart meridian ties to the root of the tongue. When the Heart and Spleen are affected by Wind Pathogens, the tongue becomes stiff and speech is impaired. (The sinews of the Three Yang meridians all connect into the jaw and cheeks, surrounding the mouth. When all Yang meridians are invaded by Wind-Cold, the sinews become tight, causing stiffness of the mouth and jaw preventing opening.)
Sudden Stroke with stiffness of the mouth and jaw preventing opening. Moxa Jiguan (named Jiache in Qianjin Yi Fang, i.e., ST-6), two points. The point is located slightly forward, eight fen below the ear. Moxa five cones, and speech can be regained. Also moxa sui nian zhuang (number of cones corresponding to age). For deviation, moxa on the side of the deviation. (Qianjin). Treat sudden stroke with stiffness of the mouth. Use a reed tube five cun long. Insert one end into the ear canal. Seal the surroundings tightly with dough to prevent air leakage. Place one soybean at the other end. Burn mugwort on top until ignited. Moxa seven cones, and the condition will improve. Moxa the right side for left-sided symptoms, and the left side for right-sided symptoms. This method is not transmitted in Qianjin. Ear diseases are also treated with this. For stiffness of the mouth and jaw, moxa the crossing vessel of the hand, three cones. Moxa the right side for left-sided symptoms, and the left side for right-sided symptoms. The moxa cone should be shaped like a rat droppings, placed horizontally, with fire applied at both ends. For stiffness of the mouth and jaw, puncture Chengqi (ST-1). (See Eye Diseases).
