The Jing-Well points correspond to the East and Spring; all things begin to grow. Therefore, the place where qi emerges is called "Jing" (Well). It is likened to a well that is drawn from daily without depletion and filled daily without overflow. The term "Jing" implies this state of non-depletion and non-overflow, hence the name.
The Ying-Spring points refer to water just emerging from its source, where the flow is still slight. Thus, the place where qi flows is called "Ying" (Spring). "Ying" signifies water flowing down and being received downstream, hence the name.
The Yuan-Source points are where the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) transports the original qi. The Sanjiao is another name for primordial qi; thus, the place where qi passes through is called "Yuan" (Source).
The Jing-River points are like water flowing through a river channel. Thus, the main pathway where qi travels is called "Jing" (River).
The He-Sea points correspond to the North and Winter; yang qi enters the zang organs. Therefore, they are called "He" (Sea), meaning that the meridian qi enters the zang organs from here and merges with the other meridians.
