Grand principles discuss Yin and Yang, while minor principles discuss husband and wife. On Yin days and during Yin hours, one should puncture the Yin Heavenly Stems; on Yang days and during Yang hours, one should puncture the Yang Heavenly Stems. Therefore, Yin and Yang refer to Qi (Vital Energy) and Blood.
On Yin days, Blood moves first and Qi follows later; on Yang days, Qi moves first and Blood follows later. The Classic states: Ying-Qi (Nutritive Qi) circulates within the vessels, while Wei-Qi (Defensive Qi) circulates outside the vessels. So why, on a Yin day even if encountering a Yang hour, does one puncture the Yin Stem? This is because on a Yin day, Blood moves first to guide Qi, and subsequently Qi enters the vessels following the Blood. This is likened to a wife possessing Qi, with the husband coming to follow her; thus it is called the Yin Stem. So why, on a Yang day even if encountering a Yin hour, does one puncture the Yang Stem? This is because on a Yang day, Qi moves first to guide Blood, and subsequently Blood flows outside the vessels following the Qi. This is likened to a husband possessing Qi, with the wife coming to follow him; thus it is called the Yang Stem. Such discussions are what this refers to.
The Classic states: The Qi begins from the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner) and pours into the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian; the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian pours into the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian; the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian pours into the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian; the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian pours into the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian; the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian pours into the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian and Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian; the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian pours into the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian; the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian returns to pour into the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Like a ring without end, circulating ceaselessly, moving day and night in accordance with the celestial degrees. This method applies to the meridians where Qi and Blood are prosperous; within a single meridian, utilizing the Well, Ying-Spring, Shu-Stream, Jing-River, and He-Sea acupoints, one employs the Ying-Sui (Following and Opposing) tonification and sedation techniques. This also employs the principle of "East is excess and West is deficient, sedate the South and tonify the North."
There are several categories of miscellaneous contraindications. The Classic states: Those who dislike needle and stone therapy cannot be spoken to regarding profound skills; those with weak and inferior Qi and Blood cannot be punctured; those with chronic diseases in a critical state cannot be punctured; under conditions of extreme cold, extreme heat, strong wind, heavy rain, severe hunger, overeating, drunkenness, or excessive labor, puncture must not be performed. However, in cases of extreme cold, do not puncture immediately; instead, let the patient reside in a warm room free from drafts, consume porridge, and drink fermented milk or wine, ensuring the patient fears no cold air. Wait until the Qi and Blood are harmonious and balanced before puncturing. By puncturing in this manner, no disease will remain uncured. All other situations should be handled by analogy. The Classic states: Do not puncture when sweat is dripping profusely, do not puncture when the pulse is chaotic and turbid, do not puncture when there is high fever; this is what is meant.
The Classic states: Taiyi (the Supreme One deity/spirit) travels daily. Starting on the Winter Solstice day, it resides first in the Yezhe Palace. Following the numerical sequence of its palace, it shifts one location each day, returning to the first after nine days. It continues endlessly in this cycle, revolving repeatedly. This is the method of Taiyi's daily travel. Its purport is very clear, with nothing hidden. Yet, practitioners of acupuncture know nothing of this; even if some know, they keep it secret and do not transmit it, causing the methods of the Sages to rarely be practiced in the world, which is truly lamentable. Although I am not a professional physician, I have previously paid attention to medicine and have heard and thoroughly understood the details. Is it benevolent to know but not recount? Thus, relying on my shallow insight, I have compiled the days where Taiyi resides for each section/term into a diagram. The diagram serves as a guide: upon entering a term and obtaining its master day, starting from its palace to its current location, counting from one to nine, shifting one palace per day, and returning to one after nine. Revolving repeatedly, proceeding in this order. Calculating that each palace obtains five days, multiplying by nine covers all days of a term completely. Now listed item by item, detailed within each palace, so that viewers facing the chart can immediately see which palace contains the day where Taiyi resides for each term, thereby knowing the forbidden areas of the human body. It is hoped that practitioners will know and avoid these areas, preventing people from offending the ominous influence of Taiyi. This is my original intention. I certainly do not seek fame. Due to my advanced age and frailty, fearing that after my death the methods of the Sages will vanish from the world, I compiled this diagram to elucidate its purport, commissioned craftsmen to carve it on stone for immortality, valuing its ability to adapt with the times. Readers, do not consider this as self-aggrandizement. Zeng Renzou, on the First Day of the First Month in the Bingzi Year, written by Bixie Sou of Pingshui.
