The Five Wheels (Wulun, the five anatomical zones of the eye corresponding to the Zang-Fu organs) serve as the defensive barriers, providing comprehensive protection on the exterior. The Eight Palaces (Baku, eight regions of the eye associated with specific physiological functions and organ systems) act as the transporters, managing internal reception and transmission. "Palace" (Kuo) implies vastness and openness. The *Ling Shu* (Spiritual Pivot) states: "The pathways are deep and long," indicating that the facial channels are profound. From behind the teeth to the epiglottis is three cun and a half deep; from the pharyngeal gate to the stomach is one chi and six cun long. This indicates that the distance between the Zang-Fu organs and the eyes is considerable. The Palaces function as the conduits for transporting essence and fluids, akin to wide thoroughfares capable of accommodating nine chariot tracks, ensuring smooth circulation and communication.
Qian Palace is located in the northwest, its meridians connecting to the Large Intestine Fu organ, while its internal Zang association belongs to the Lung. The Lung and Large Intestine are interior-exteriorly paired; the upper Jiao transports pure qi, and the lower Jiao conveys waste products. As the official of transmission, it is therefore called the Chuan Dao Palace (Palace of Transmission).
Kan Palace is located due north, its meridians connecting to the Bladder Fu organ, while its internal Zang association belongs to the Kidney. The Kidney and Bladder are interior-exteriorly paired; it is the source of True Water, responsible for distributing essence and fluids, hence it is called the Jing Ye Palace (Palace of Essence and Fluids).
Gen Palace is located in the northeast, its meridians connecting to the Upper Jiao and the Ming Men (Gate of Life). The Upper Jiao and Ming Men converge the Qi of all Yin meridians and distribute it to the hundred vessels, thus it is called the Hui Yin Palace (Palace of Converging Yin).
Zhen Palace is located due east, its meridians connecting to the Gallbladder Fu organ, while its internal Zang association belongs to the Liver. The Liver and Gallbladder are interior-exteriorly paired; it governs the metabolism of pure qi and remains free from turbidity, so it is called the Qing Jing Palace (Palace of Purity and Clarity).
Xun Palace is located in the southeast, its meridians connecting to the Middle Jiao and the collateral vessels of the Liver. The Liver collaterals circulate blood to nourish the Middle Jiao, differentiating Qi and Blood to facilitate transformation and generation, thus it is called the Yang Hua Palace (Palace of Nourishment and Transformation).
Li Palace is located due south, its meridians connecting to the Small Intestine Fu organ, while its internal Zang association belongs to the Heart. The Heart and Small Intestine are interior-exteriorly paired; it is the vessel where all Yang meridians receive Qi, hence it is called the Bao Yang Palace (Palace of Embracing Yang).
Kun Palace is located in the southwest, its meridians connecting to the Stomach Fu organ, while its internal Zang association belongs to the Spleen. The Spleen and Stomach are interior-exteriorly paired; they govern the reception of water and grains to sustain life, thus it is called the Shui Gu Palace (Palace of Water and Grains).
Dui Palace is located due west, its meridians connecting to the Lower Jiao and the collateral vessels of the Kidney. The Kidney collaterals and the Lower Jiao jointly govern Yin essence and nurture the source of transformation and generation, hence it is called the Guan Quan Palace (Palace of Closing the Spring).
The pairing of Zang and Fu organs follows established principles in the *Nei Jing* (Inner Canon). Regarding the distribution of the San Jiao (Triple Burner) linking to the Liver and Kidney, this refers to the specific meridian configuration of the eye. Since the eye orifices connect to the Liver and are governed by the Kidney, there are two distinct collateral distributions. By observing the meridian networks of both eyes, these patterns become clearly visible.
